Day 3: Terrible! Forgot to check the weather because of no phone. Got wet through in the rain after school. Everyone laughed. I wanted to post a complaint, but... no apps.

Day 15: Met Sarah at the park. She said, You’re always smiling now. I didn’t even notice. We fed ducks and talked about dumb stuff(like her cat’s haircut). No filters, no likes --- just fun. At home, Mom hugged me and said, “Proud of you,” Weird... but nice.

My Life Change in Grade Eight
Now I’m in Grade 8. Life feels faster and different. It’s not just a new grade; it feels like a new stage.
The biggest change is that everything becomes tougher. Homework isn’t just more; it feels harder. We have new subjects like physics and chemistry, and they make me think in new ways. Exams feel more important, especially when I hear about Zhongkao(the important test to enter high school) in the future. My parents still ask “How was school ” but I see they expect more now. I feel real pressure.
My friends are changing, too. The big groups from Grade Seven are getting smaller. We are finding out who our real friends are --- the ones who understand being stuck on math, laugh at the same funny videos during the break, and feel the same mix of happiness and worry about getting older. Some friendships feel stronger, especially with friends I study with late at night( often with bubble tea!). Others... well, we just slowly grow apart because we like different things or study with different people. It makes me a little sad sometimes.
But it’s not all hard work and changing friends. I also have more freedom! My mom lets me take the subway alone on weekends to meet friends (if my phone location is on!). This independence is exciting! Making my own small choices, going to places in the city by myself --- it makes me feel confident, even though I sometimes still get lost in the big subway system. I get some pocket money now and decide to save it or spend it on snacks like stinky tofu or milk tea after tutoring.
The photos of myself in Grade Seven look weird. That kid seems ... easier, maybe simpler Now, I’m juggling hard schoolwork, friendship, and new freedom. It’s demanding and tiring sometimes, but also exciting. Life is changing a lot this year, but I’m learning how to deal with it.

Do you agree with gene (基因) editing
Andy: Every year, many babies are born with genetic (遗传的) problems. If we can get rid of these problems by editing their genes, we can save many lives. Editing genes allows parents to choose their babies’ appearance and even intelligence. This can give their children a better future. However, to stop some people from using this technology in bad ways, it’s necessary to have laws that tell us how we are allowed to edit genes.
Diana: Parents make the decision to edit a baby’s genes without their children’s agreement. This goes against the rights of these unborn children. More importantly, this technology may destroy humans’ genetic diversity (多样性). In my opinion, you are unique and no one can replace you. However, this could change if parents can edit their babies’ genes. Everyone might look the same someday.
Cici: This new technology can help fix babies’ problems that they are born with, like heart diseases. Many children are badly affected by those problems. ____3____ But with this technology, all babies can be born healthy and their parents won’t have to worry about them.
Kate: This technology could be dangerous. It could result in some problems for babies if it is not used properly. Their parents may regret this. What’s worse, if only rich people can afford it, gene editing could be seen as unfair to poor families. The rich would be able to make their children clever and good-looking, while ordinary people could not. Rich families would get richer and poor families would get poorer.
1. What does Andy think is needed to stop people from using gene editing in wrong ways
A. Getting rid of genetic problems. B. Laws to control gene editing.

A UK book company recently changed some words in Roald Dahl’s famous children’s books. The company said they wanted the stories to be “enjoyed by everyone” by removing words that might hurt people’s feelings. But many people disagreed, saying this censorship (changing or hiding content) ____1____ creativity.
Roald Dahl was a popular British writer who wrote funny and magical stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. His books are full of silly characters and wild ideas. ____2____, in The Twits, a man eats spaghetti mixed with worms! Dahl often made children the heroes, while adults in his stories were sometimes stupid or unkind. His writing style is loud and funny, which has made kids ____3____ for over 50 years.
However, some people think certain words in Dahl’s books are not ____4____ today. The publisher Puffin then asked a team to edit the books. Words like “fat” or “ugly” were removed. Words like “tiny” became “small”, and “mothers” or “fathers” were changed to “parents” or “family”.
These changes made many readers angry. They argue that rewriting books takes away the author’s original style. They think the changes are unnecessary.
This debate shows how ____5____ changes over time. Old books might include words we find unfair or rude today. But many believe stories should stay as the author wrote them, even if they have old-fashioned ideas. After all, books are like time capsules-they help us understand the past.

Their son, Jake, didn’t want to change his school, and their daughter, Lily, was sad to leave her friends.
Packing was the first challenge. The house was full of memories, and deciding what to keep was hard. Jake wanted to keep his old toys, while Lily wanted to take every photo album. Mr Johnson tried to help organize everything, but he accidentally broke a vase while moving furniture.
On moving day, it started raining heavily, but everyone worked together to solve the problems. Jake helped push the truck, lily packed the boxes, and Mrs Johnson made hot chocolate to keep everyone warm.
When they finally arrived at the new house, things started to look better. The yard was perfect for a garden, and the neighbourhood had a park nearby. Jake found out his new school had a great soccer team, and Lily quickly made friends with the neighbours.
The family all agreed that the move was worth the effort. They realized that change could be difficult, but it also brought new chances.

Diary Entries: My Life Without Phone & Social Media
Day 1: Ugh, Mom took my phone yesterday to help me focus. Seriously I feel like my arm is missing. How can I talk to friends What if someone texts me and I miss it At lunch, I just stared at my food. Bored. Anxious!
Day 3: Terrible! Forgot to check the weather because of no phone. Got wet through in the rain after school. Everyone laughed. I wanted to post a complaint, but... no apps.
Day 5: Woke up early (no phone at night). Actually finished homework before dinner. Mom said, “You’re less angry.” Hmm. After class, Jamie asked why I’m offline. We talked in real life about math homework. Felt... normal
Day 10: Okay, BIG surprise: I joined the after-school basketball team. Never had time before. My shots are terrible, but the team high-fived me anyway. Laughed so hard that my stomach hurt. Also, read a whole book chapter without checking DDL. Who am I
Day 15: Met Sarah at the park. She said, You’re always smiling now. I didn’t even notice. We fed ducks and talked about dumb stuff(like her cat’s haircut). No filters, no likes --- just fun. At home, Mom hugged me and said, “Proud of you,” Weird... but nice.
Final Note: Still no phone, but ... maybe I’m okay Turns out, real life is slow, and kind of awesome.
