On his tenth birthday, on February 6, 2023, Lzmir Kassam woke to the news of the powerful earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Living in Calgary but named after Turkey’s third-largest city, Lzmir felt a deep connection to the sorrow. Driven by a wish to help, he saw an opportunity to make a difference through his love of running. Two years earlier, Lzmir had run his first half-marathon, collecting money for Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan.
This time he set a new goal: to run ten kilometers ten times, each run marking a year of his life, and to use this challenge to collect money for the people in the earthquake-hit area. Over the course of four months, from last February to June, he ran a total of 62 miles (100 kilometers)-more than two marathons. For his final run, on June 10, the Canadian Turkish Cultural and Islamic Centre helped organise a celebratory event, and Lzmir was joined by his father, his teacher, his classmates and members of the Calgary Turkish community.
In the end, Lzmir’s movement collected more than 10,500 for the people in the earthquake-hit area. “Sometimes I’d feel tired,” Lzmir told CBC Kids News after the last run. “But then I’d think of all these people that I’m helping and I’d keep pushing on.”

More time spent sitting, reclining or lying down during the day may increase the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease (CVD) and death, according to a study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. More than roughly 10-and-a-half hours of sedentary (久坐的) behavior per day was significantly linked with future heart failure (HF) and CVD death, even among people meeting recommended levels of exercise.
“Our findings support cutting back on sedentary time to reduce cardiovascular risk, with 10.5 hours a day marking a potentially key threshold tied to higher heart failure and cardiovascular mortality,” said Shaan Khurshid, MD, MPH, a cardiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital. “Too much sitting or lying down can be harmful for heart health, even for those who are active.”
This study examined the amount of sedentary time at which CVD risk is greatest and explored how sedentary behavior and physical activity together impact the chances of atrial fibrillation (心房颤动) (AF), HF, myocardial infarction (心肌梗死) (MI) and CVD death.
Among the 89,530 study participants of the UK Biobank, participants submitted data from a wrist-worn triaxial accelerometer that captured movement over seven days. The average sedentary time per day was 9.4 hours. After an average follow-up of eight years, 3,638 individuals developed incident AF; 1,854 developed incident HF; 1,610 developed indecent MI; 846 died of CVD causes.
For study participants who met the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity or more, the effects of sedentary behavior on AF and MI risks were substantially reduced, but effects on higher risk of HF and CVD mortality remained prominent.
“This study adds to the growing evidence of a strong link between sedentary behavior and cardiovascular health,” said Khurshid. “The findings strongly suggest that we need to get people moving to promote better health. Future guidelines and public health efforts should stress the importance of cutting down on sedentary time. Avoiding more than 10.6 hours per day may be a realistic minimal target for better heart health.”
28.What risk does the study mention for those who sit more
A.Obesity. B.Recognition loss.
C.Heart problems. D.Physical disability.
29.What does the underlined word “threshold” mean in paragraph 2
A.Dimension. B.Limitation.
C.Reputation. D.Discipline.
30.What does Khurshid think of the current guidelines
A.They need improving.
B.They are of no meaning.
C.They stress physical activity.
D.They cut down sedentary time.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Active Lifestyles Protect Against Sedentary Risks
B.Sedentary Behaviors Under 10.5 Hours Are Safe for Heart
C.Exercise Alone Fails to Fight Against Heart Disease Risks
D.Sedentary Lifestyles Threaten Heart Health Despite Exercise
D
Recordings (录音) of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives ( 蜂窝) either recorded or real may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops.
Years ago, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might stop elephants from eating crops.
But before she asked farmers to set up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would frighten elephants away.
Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.
From a distance, Lucy turned on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group didn’t react to the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall ( 瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.
Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know and she has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.
32.What can be the title of the passage
A.Bees are the King of the Forest B.How to Keep Elephants Away

B.To make a video of elephants.
C.To see if elephants would run away.
D.To find out more about the behavior of bees.
34.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Groups of elephants will make bees angry..
B.Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.
C.Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.
D.Young elephants ignore African honeybees.
35.According to the passage, Lucy ________.
A.works by herself in Africa
B.needs to test more elephant groups
C.has stopped elephants eating crops
D.has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It started with a whisper. “Everyone else got one,” my daughter said to me, her eyes locked on the floor. “I was the only one who didn’t.”
36 The one everyone was talking about in the lunch line and on the walk home. The one that she heard would have unlimited cupcakes. The one she didn’t get an invitation to.
There’s a particular kind of heartbreak that happens when your child feels excluded (排除在外的). You don’t just witness their disappointment; you absorb it. 37 “I’m sure it wasn’t personal,” I said softly. “Sometimes kids are only allowed to invite a few people.” But the words felt weak, like a Band-Aid on a big and deep cut.
This experience could have easily been about how to handle exclusion as a parent — how to build resilience (韧性). But what I've learned is less clean than that. 38 You can’t smooth every rough edge. Sometimes, your job is just to sit beside your kid in the thick of it. To let them cry.to let yourself feel angry, and to know that fixing it isn’t always the assignment.
39 She wrote a little note for the birthday kid. “Happy birthday,” it read. “Hope you have fun.” No bitterness. Just kindness. My daughter, in all her smallness, did what I hadn’t even figured out how to do yet: move forward without letting the hurt define her.
And maybe that's the only real takeaway I have. That sometimes, our kids teach us the wisdom we’re still trying to learn.
She never got that invitation. But what we gained quietly was something else: the chance to walk through disappointment together, hand in hand. 40
A.After all, honesty is the best policy.
B.Part of parenting is being powerless.
C.At first, I tried to say something to comfort her.
D.I encouraged her to show forgiveness to the kid.
E.And that, to me, feels like something worth celebrating.
F.The birthday party was definitely to be one to remember.
G.What surprised me most was what happened the next day.

第二节:语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
When I was a child, my family would always sit down together for meals. My favourite was among the simplest: spaghetti pomodoro, pasta in tomato sauce. We ate fresh vegetables and fruit, and, starting in our teenage years, 56 (drink) a glass of red wine. We ate together. I enjoyed a few slices of prosciutto and practised a wide variety of outdoor sports. This centuries-old Mediterranean (地中海) diet kept me fit, 57 turned out to be good not just my personal well-being, but for the planet’s health too.
In 2020, we will celebrate 58 tenth anniversary of UNESCO’s designation (指定) of this Mediterranean diet as a “Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. But unfortunately, Italians 59 (turn) away from their traditional healthy diet. We have started to eat more fast food and have increased our portions. 60 (few) Italians enjoy social meals with family and friends. Italian children were 61 the most overweight in a recent study of 30 countries by the WHO.
Poor nutrition is a global problem, not just an Italian one. The fact that it’s hitting Italy, the land 62 the Mediterranean diet originated, represents a dangerous contradiction- one of many affecting the world of food. After years of decline, hunger is back on the rise. Globally, some 821 million people still do not have enough 63 (eat). Yet 64 the poor south hungers, the rich north gorges: some 2 billion people are overweight. We waste one-third of global food production. Livestock consume an estimated two-thirds of all the land that 65 (devote) to agriculture and contribute about half of farming-related greenhouse-gas emissions.

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)

I liked living in a mess. The desk, which should have been clear for my homework, was always filled with empty milk bottles, old magazines, and Post-it notes. My floor seemed to swallow anything that entered my room. Mom always insisted that I clean my room. I’d respond with a nod, but never actually did it. She ended up having to tidy up herself. But no matter how much she cleaned, I always seemed to turn it into a mess again within days.
One weekend afternoon, I was lying in bed, lost in a book while my room was a total mess. Clothes were piled on the chair, snack wrappers littered the floor, and the desk was entirely hidden beneath my school books. I was comfortably immersed in (沉浸在) my chaos — until the phone rang. It was my best friend Felix. “Hey! How about playing chess together ”
“Good idea! Just come over!” I replied, picturing us laughing and enjoying each other’s company. However, as soon as I hung up the phone, reality hit me like a ton of bricks: my room was an absolute disaster!
I didn’t want my friend to see my room like this. My mind raced — should I call Felix back and tell him I am too busy Wouldn’t it be better to spare him from the horror of stepping into my disaster zone But I felt so guilty at the thought of lying to my best friend just because it looked as if a tornado had hit my room.
I decided to tidy up my room. With only half an hour before Felix arrived, I felt the pressure increasing. I thought about asking someone for help, so I stepped out of my room. I found my brother playing video games and my dad working. Only Mom seemed to have a moment to spare. When I approached her with my request, she turned me down. “You can handle it on your own. Just learn to be independent,” she said gently.

第一节:
Dear John,
I am really sorry to hear that you feel bad after entering high school, so I’m writing to offer some advice to you.
Here are my suggestions: first, I recommend that you should try to invite some of your classmates to take part in some activities together after school, which will help you understand each other better. Besides, it is a good idea to help your classmates when they are in trouble and turn to them for help when you have difficulty. Finally, why not start a conversation with your classmates about their hobbies or academic topics Sharing common interests can be a great way to connect with them.
Hope my suggestions will be helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节:
One possible version:
Paragraph 1: I knew there was no way out this time. So I walked back to my room. The chaos around me weighed heavily on my mind. Each item reminded me of the work I had to do. Time was running out, and I knew I had to get it together and take action. I picked up the clothes from the chair and put them into the laundry basket. Then I threw the snack wrappers into the trash can and piled my schoolwork. I wiped the dust off the desk. It felt good to see some progress.
Paragraph 2: Just as I finished cleaning, I heard a knock on the door. It was Felix. After greeting my family, he walked into my room with me. As he stepped inside, he was surprised at how tidy it looked. Embarrassment washed over me as I explained that my room had been a total mess before this clean-up. I finally decided to take charge of the chaos. Felix remarked on how impressive it was to see me managing my space, admiring my newfound independence. A strong feeling of pride welled inside me.
