Step4 Vocabulary Practice -Lily’s Gardening Story
DIY: A Beloved Hobby in the UK
In the UK, many people love DIY—it’s not just a hobby, but a part of their daily life. Let’s look at two common examples and see why DIY is so great.
Step5 Extended reading
1. What does the word “beloved” mean in the title
A. Hated B. Popular C. Expensive D. Difficult
2. What will the passage probably talk about next
Two common examples of DIY in the UK.
Example 1: Mr. Green’s Garden Shed
Mr. Green, a 50-year-old man from London, had an old, broken shed in his backyard. Last summer, he decided to fix it himself instead of paying someone to do it.
First, he went to a DIY store to buy new wood, nails, and paint. Then, he spent weekends taking down the rotten parts, cutting new wood to fit, and putting the shed back together. He even painted it his favorite blue color and added small shelves for his gardening tools.
This DIY project saved him lots of money—hiring a worker would have cost three times more than buying the materials. And when he finished, he felt super proud. Every time he uses the shed, he thinks, “I made this myself!” That’s the sense of achievement DIY brings.
Choose the right answers:
1. Why did Mr. Green choose to fix his shed by himself
A. He couldn’t find a worker to help him.
B. He wanted to save money.
C. He had nothing to do on weekends.
D. His shed was too new to hire a worker.
2. How does Mr. Green feel after finishing the garden shed
A. Tired.
B. Bored.
C. Worried.
D. Proud.
Example 2: Emma’s Knitted Gifts
Emma is a 16-year-old student in Manchester. She loves knitting DIY gifts for her family. Every winter, she makes scarves and hats for her little sister.
She buys soft wool from a local shop (cheaper than buying ready-made scarves!) and follows simple online patterns. She chooses her sister’s favorite colors—pink and white—and adds small flower patterns. Her sister always says, “This is the best gift ever!”
Knitting lets Emma use her creativity to make unique gifts, they’re made with love, and don’t cost much money. They are so special !
Answer the questions:
1. What does Emma make for her little sister every winter
2. Where does Emma buy the wool for her knitting
3. Why are the gifts so special
Scarves and hats.
Because they’re unique, made with love, and don’t cost much money.
A local shop.
