His wife, 68-year-old Xiong Gengxiang, handles rice cooking. She cooks more than 10 pots of rice a day. They also have a special kitchen, which is a shared kitchen. Wan and Xiong buy more kitchen tools, so more people can cook in the kitchen at the same time.
The special kitchen is located right next to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital. Over the past 20 years, it has become widely known as the “anti-cancer kitchen” for providing patients and their families with a convenient place to cook meals. The couple provides the use of their kitchen to the public at a very low price — only 1 yuan once.
The kitchen was originally a breakfast stall. They used to cook youtiao, which was well-known in the neighborhood. One day in 2003, a young couple walked by and asked if they could cook food for their son in the kitchen. Their boy was suffering from bone cancer. He wanted to eat his mother’s cooking. Wan and Xiong let the young mother use their kitchen for free. Later, they had an idea that they could offer the kitchen to other families who wanted to make meals for their hospitalized relatives.
In February 2021, Wan and Xiong received the Touching China Award 2020, which is an annual award that recognizes the country’s most inspiring role models in different aspects. Later that year, in November, they were also named “National Moral Models”. When asked why doing this, Wan said, “I want to help. I am willing to do it, and I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.”

In the age of online shopping and e-readers, devoted staff and customers have kept the doors of Auntie’s Bookstore open for over 40 years. “When you’re in Portland, you go to Powell’s Books. When you’ re in Seattle, you go to Elliott Bay. When you’re in Spokane, you go to Auntie’s,” said John Waite, the owner of the bookstore. “I can’t imagine Spokane without Auntie’s,” he said. “A lot of people can’t imagine Spokane without Auntie’s, either,” Waite said.
Turning visitors into regular customers is important to the store’s success. Auntie’s markets itself as a destination. A half-dozen book clubs meet there. In most weeks, the store hosts two to four author readings or literary events. “We want people to come down, hang out and experience the feel of having a book in their hands,” Waite said.
Eager readers not only want to read books, but want to discuss them, said Kerry Halls, the store manager. Auntie’ s offers them that chance, she said. “You can’t go to Amazon and talk to someone about your favorite novel, or discuss what you think of the latest Stephen King’s book compared with Pet Cemetery,” she said.
To compete with the convenience of shopping online, Auntie’s tries to predict what books will become a trend. They store these books in advance. But Waite doesn’t hide the realities of selling books in the age of Amazon and other online retailers. “Even the big guys can’t make it,” he said, noting physical retailers are striving nationally. As the United States’ oldest national bookstore chain, Barnes & Noble has to constantly reorganize to stop the declining sales.
At Auntie’s, regular customers are very important to its survival and development. Sales of children’s and young adults’ books are increasing in recent years, Waite said. “For a long time, older customers have kept book stores alive,” he said. “Now, it’s starting to attract younger people.” Another reason of Auntie’s longevity (长寿) is Northwest culture, which Waite said encourages new ways of thinking and the diversity of ideas. “I think it’s a great book town,” Waite said. “People are enthusiastic about reading.”
28. What can we learn about Auntie’s from Paragraph 1
A. It is popular throughout the US.
B. It is a well-known physical bookstore in Spokane.
C. It takes full advantage of the e-business platform.
D. It has a longer history than Powell’s Books and Elliott Bay.
29. How does Auntie’s keep its customers
A. To awaken people’s interest in reading.
B. To have more regular customers.
C. To set up a literary environment.
D. To encourage readers to learn about more authors.
30. What does the underlined word “striving” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. celebrating. B. struggling. C. progressing D. sharing
31. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Culture of Northwest America.
B. Auntie’s Bookstore: An Ideal place for Book Lovers.
C. The Decline of Physical Bookstores in the Online Age.

Is boredom a thing of the past, like black-and-white television And, if so, is that a good thing Julie Robinson, a former teacher who now represents the Independent Association of Prep Schools, thinks that boredom is regarded as an enemy of today’s children, and they are losing the ability to become thoughtful and reflective.
“We should not fear boredom.” said Julie Robinson. “Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,” she added.
Her opinion is that constant activity for a child, often the result of the dreams of parents, will lead to concerned and worrying adult. The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.
Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic device to play games at once. And we didn’t feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient “Are we there yet ” because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom. So what chance do children have to allow their thoughts to wander
But it’s not just children who need lessons in reflection. Adults need that, too. On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device. No one was simply looking out of the window at the beautiful views. Not time for quiet thinking, even in the quiet library. There were emails to send, texts to read, and games to play. The wider world, seemingly, didn’t exist. The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability — among adults as well as children — to live in the present. What Julie Robinson regards is a cross-generational phenomenon: the fear of “inactivity”. And she is right.
32. Julie Robinson thinks boredom is useful because it makes children______.
A. find effective solutions to social problems
B. have time to think and have their imagination developed
C. improve the ability to learn knowledge
D. communicate more with their parents and friends
33. Which of the following is seen as “inactivity” according to the last paragraph
A. Sending emails on a train.
B. Playing games with friends.
C. Planning constant activity for children.
D. Looking out of the window at the beautiful views.
34. The author mentioned the train journey to show that ______.
A. electronic devices influence people’s life greatly
B. the view of the countryside was beautiful
C. people had too much work to do
D. the trip on a quiet train was very boring
35. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. The importance of preventing children from being bored.
B. The negative impacts of electronic devices on adults.
C. The problem of people’s fear of boredom.
D. The ways to encourage children’s imagination development.

Once in a remote village, there lived a teenage girl, named Maya. She had a dream — to become an astronaut and explore the vastness of space. However, many doubted her dream because they thought it was unrealistic for someone with their poor background. In this village, there was no one daring to have this dream. which was beyond the wildest dream.
However, Maya was not defeated by the doubt and dedicated herself to her studies. She bought many volumes of books on astronomy from the faraway libraries. In the beginning, her parents just let go of her crazy passion, but gradually her efforts amazed them. With their support, she even tried to find opportunities online to attend science camps, and sought guidance from mentors (导师). Maya’s passion for space grew stronger with each passing day, fueling her determination to overcome any difficulties in her path.
As Maya approached her final year of high school, an opportunity arose — a famous scholarship that offered a chance to study astrophysics (天体物理学) at a famous university. Maya knew that this scholarship could be her ticket to achieving her dreams.
The scholarship selection process was strict, testing candidates’ knowledge, skills, and talent. Maya poured countless hours into preparation, expanding her knowledge and improving her abilities.
When the day of the scholarship interview arrived, Maya faced a group of professors and experts in the field. Nervously, she answered their questions and shared her passion for space exploration.
Weeks turned into months as Maya awaited the scholarship results. Doubts and anxieties stuck in her mind, but she reminded herself of the importance of perseverance. She continued to believe in herself and her abilities, refusing to let setbacks define her journey.
Finally, the day of the scholarship announcement arrived. Maya’s heart raced as the names were called one by one. As the last name echoed in the room, Maya’s heart sank — it wasn’t hers.

Text 10
W: It’s true that the days of marketing chiefly through television, newspapers, and magazines are long gone. Yet social media has not just changed the ways in which people discover brands; it has weakened the power of marketing as a whole. Online, talk is cheap and prices are easily searched. Surveys suggest that young Americans are among the most price-sensitive food shoppers. Four fifths of young Americans consider a brand’s social impact before checkout, but they care less about the social influence than their parents. Chiefly, it is youngsters who prefer to buy cheap “fast-fashion” outfits to wear once and then throw them away — although “fast-fashion” has been criticized all along. There is a temptation to think that physical shops no longer matter. Young consumers love their online shop deliveries. It makes sense for the company to make sales via social media and ship directly to customers’ homes. But what works best is the perfect combination of the digital and physical worlds. If they want to succeed, they need to offer the best of both physical and virtual worlds.
