A common remark in pieces about “kids these days and their social language” is “when did friend become a verb ” The answer is: sometime in the 1400s, if not earlier. In the earliest examples of the verb friend from the Oxford English Dictionary, it just means “to make friends”. You could go to a place, and friend some people there. It also had the meaning of helping someone out, being a friend to them, e. g. , “Reports came that the King would friend Lauderdale,” an example from 1698. If you could friend someone, it was only natural, according to the productive rules of English word formation, that you could unfriend them, too. The word shows up in this example from 1659: “I hope, sir, that we are not mutually (相互) un-friended by tis difference which has happened between us.”
Hang out has been used as a verb for passing the time since at least the 1659s. In the Pickwick Papers(1837), Charles Dickens wrote: “I say, old boy, where do you hang out ”
The application of funky to music came around the 1930s, but the “strong smell” sense had been around long before that. Since the 1600s, funk was slang (俚语) for the unpleasant smell of tobacco smoke, and by extension, anything that stank (臭的). Cheeses, rooms, and especially ship’s toilets could be described as funky. The application of fanboy to comics and science fiction had to wait until the 70s, but before that, there were sports fans, and in 1919 the paper in Decatur, Illinois, reported that, “it was a shock to the fan boys when Cincinnati…beat the Chicago White Sox.” The first citation (引用) for fangirl is from 1934: “Mary…dashed out through the rain so swiftly that only two of the fan-girls caught her. ”
4. When did the word “unfriend” turn up
A. In 1837. B. In 1698.
C. In 1659. D. In 1400.
5. Which one can be described as funky
A. A fresh apple.
B. A cup of Coca-Cola.
C. A bottle of purified water.
D. A homeless dog.
6 Where did the word “fanboy” first appear
A. In sports. B. In comics. C. In science fiction. D. In movies.
7. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Origin of OED
B. Words That Are Much Older than They Seem
C. How Words Are Changed
D. The Application of Strange Words
C
More than 100 dolphins were found dead in the Amazon River during a severe drought and record-high water temperatures. The conditions in which the animals were found have caused fears that the rising global temperatures may be passing the tolerance level for vulnerable (易受伤害的) species.
The dead bodies of animals appeared at Lake Tefé, a branch of the Amazon River, alongside thousands of dead fish. Experts believe that the low river levels, added to the unbearable water temperatures, triggered the dolphins’ death.
The Amazon River dolphin is native to South America. It is also known by the locals as boto, and can be pink or gray. Scientists noted that roughly eight of every 10 deaths are pink dolphins, which could represent 10% of their estimated population in Lake Tefé.
“The past month in Tefé has seemed like a science-fiction climate-change description,” Daniel Tregidgo, a British researcher living in the area, told The Guardian. “To know that one has died is sad, but to see lots of dead bodies, knowing that this drought has killed over 100 dolphins, is a tragedy.” The International Union for the Conservation of Nature classifies botos as endangered, and there are only six existing freshwater dolphin species left in the world.
The effects of the drought are also felt by the populations living on the edges of the river. The level of the Amazon River has fallen by 30 centimeters each day over the past two weeks. Since most food and fuel supplies are transported by boat, there are concerns that this could drive up prices and cause food insecurity. The drought has also impacted fishing, an activity that provides food and income for many families in the region.
The Amazon has historically been known for its biodiversity, as it is home to 10% of all the wildlife species we know about. Sadly, it now seems to be front row to the effects of global warming, affecting both endangered species and vulnerable communities. Now, the community is preparing for more droughts over the next couple of weeks, which could result in more animal deaths and further hardships for the region.

11. What is a consequence of the drought according to Paragraph 5

A poll of 2,000 UK adults found more than one third (36%) admit to rarely, or never, reading cookies or terms and conditions online before accepting them. And of those who do, 38% spend a mere 30 seconds or less scanning through. About 31% simply can’t be bothered to read the small print, while about one quarter (26%) claim they do not have the time.
It also emerged that 85% have accepted cookies on a website without reading the policies or making any changes, and that 62% will accept despite not knowing what they are agreeing to.
The research was commissioned (委托) by Avast, which has teamed up with baking star Prue Leith to help educate Internet users about digital cookies. She has created a limited run of her chocolate chip cookies, which are free for people to order online and come with tips and tricks on how to scan the digital kind of cookies.
Prue Leith said, “While recent times have highlighted the importance of being connected online, it’s also never been more important for people to feel safe while doing so. Many people of all ages, but particularly of my generation, aren’t as familiar with certain aspects of the Internet, and this of course includes digital cookies. This can prove to be a barrier to learning about everything that being online has to offer, so I am absolutely delighted to be working with Avast to help people understand what cookies are and how they work.”
The survey also found half of adults are “fed up” with being asked to accept cookies when landing on a web page, although 30% find it helpful that cookies remember information such as passwords and preferences. But 29% are confused by cookie policies, and 70% even believe websites intentionally try to confuse them with the language they use. However, over two thirds (68%) feel they could be risking their online privacy when accepting a “cookie policy” without reading it. As a result, three quarters (75%) think Internet users need to be better educated on what is included in cookie policies.
12. Prue Leith baked a limited run of cookies to ________.
A. promote her baked products online. B. offer free cookies to people in need.
C. maintain the cooperation with Avast. D. spread the knowledge on digital cookies.
13. How does the author present the result of the research
A. By conducting polls. B. By listing statistics.
C. By exploring phenomenon and nature. D. By analyzing causes and effects.
14. What will the author tell in the following paragraph
A. The side effects of leaking personal privacy.
B. The gravity of fully accepting digital cookies.
C. The drawbacks of overlooking digital cookies
D. The specific tips on how to read digital cookies.
15. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To remind netizens to pay more attention to digital cookies.
B. To appeal to consumers to be concerned about the online tricks.
C. To advocate caring for the generation unfamiliar with the Internet.
D. To advise the Internet companies to revise digital cookies policies.

It was the beginning of a new year, and I was in the best class, where most of the chatterboxes were. Sadly, I was not one of them. Most of the time, my mouth was zipped very tightly and I hardly had any friends who appreciated my silence.
There was a speech competition three months later. The selection was left to our strict English teacher Mrs.Lee, whom I feared the most because she hardly ever smiled at us. Strangely though, on the day her decision was to be announced to us, she proclaimed, “Jane shall be the one who will join the competition.”
There was silence in our usually-noisy class. “You have to write a speech today and show it to me tomorrow, Jane,” Mrs. Lee instructed, thereby breaking the ice.
The next day, I showed my speech to Mrs. Lee. Reading it, she nodded in satisfaction and grinned at me for the first time. In the sweetest voice, she praised me, “Wonderful work! Why don’t you read it to the class ” Instantly, my throat went dry. Butterflies fluttered around in my stomach, crashing against my stomach walls and making me feel sick.
Swallowing hard and taking a deep breath, I began reciting my essay with the worst pronunciation anyone had ever heard. However, I stumbled a little and panicked, unable to go on. The entire class burst into laughter as they shouted discouraging words, saying that they should have been in my place instead. Hot tears stung my eyes as I rushed back to my seat, weeping silently in embarrassment.
After school, Mrs. Lee called me to her office, where she gave me a few pointers on how to overcome stage fright. Patiently, she went through the speech with me several times until my utterly bad pronunciation was “cured”. It was with much patience that Mrs. Lee worked through those three months with me, ensuring that my words were crisp and clear and teaching me how to put expressions into my sentences.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

How Music Has Changed My Life
I like music very much and it performs an important role in my daily life.
I first fell in love with music when I was a child, listening to melodies that painted vibrant pictures in my mind. Music became my solace during tough times, a friend when I felt alone, and a source of inspiration that fueled my creativity. Its harmonies lifted my spirits, its lyrics spoke to my soul, and its rhythms guided my steps through life’s highs and lows.
In essence, music has been the soundtrack of my existence, shaping my emotions, thoughts, and dreams in ways words could never express.
47. Finally the day of my competition arrived. As I stepped into the hall, I was overwhelmed by stress and nerves, which drained the blood from my face. Instantly, Mrs. Lee took my cold, clammy hands in hers and spoke words of encouragement. I immediately gained confidence and beamed with a smile. When the host called my name, I strode up to the stage with my heart pounding so hard. Reaching for the microphone, I closed my eyes, smiled, and then opened them, casting aside all my fears. I began speaking, and my voice came out crisp and clear, with perfect articulation. Before I knew it, the speech was over, and everyone was giving me a standing ovation.
When the contest was over, the judges declared me the champion. They invited me to go up on stage to receive the trophy. I was dizzy with delight and could not suppress my nervous giggles, my grins, or the tears of joy welling up in my eyes. I had won! I could do it! I didn’t let all my hard work go to waste, nor did I disappoint Mrs. Lee, who had put in so much effort! Smiling into the audience, I spotted Mrs. Lee, who was smiling back at me with pride sparkling in her eyes. “Thank you, Mrs. Lee!” I thought to myself. “You have proven that nothing is insurmountable, as long as I do not give up and work hard!”
