Naps (小睡) don’t just feel amazing — they are amazing. A study published in the magazine Heart found a relationship between healthy napping and a lowered risk of heart disease. The American Psychological Association points out that naps can improve memory, learning ability, immune system function (免疫功能) and mood. Sara Mednick, the writer of The Power of the Downstate, explains that when you fall asleep, your body moves through stages that each play a role in health.
Stage 1: the “dozing off” (打瞌睡) period
Stage 2: heart rate (率) and brain activity slow down
Stage 3: deep sleep
Stage 4: REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when brain activity increases and you’re most likely to dream
Ideal napping times are based around this four-stage cycle.
The 20-minute nap
Between 20 and 30 minutes is one napping sweet spot, according to Mednick, who explains that you get enough Stage 2 sleep to turn your body and mind into full relaxation mode, good for memory.
The 60-minute nap
Stage 3 sleep is a time for your body to repair itself, strengthen the immune system and recharge energy stores. But waking up during this stage can make you feel weak or rather ill, Mednick says. Most people start to move out of Stage 3 after around 60 minutes, which makes it a good time to set your alarm clock.
The 90-minute nap
A complete sleep cycle is about an hour and a half, and napping for a full cycle is of great help. But naps longer than 90 minutes can influence nighttime sleep and might even lead to a bad memory, according to a study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Not a regular napper That’s OK. “Everyone needs to rest, but not everyone necessarily needs to nap,” says Mednick.
What can a healthy napping improve
Mood. B. Skills. C. Sports ability. D. Nighttime sleep.
What can we learn from the passage
People will not have a dream until Stage 3.
People who nap too long may be forgetful.
People can get enough Stage 2 sleep in 5 minutes.
People who nap healthily won’t have heart diseases.
If you have a speech at 1:00 p.m., which kind of nap will be the best choice at noon A. A10-minute nap. B. A 30-minute nap. C. A 60-minute nap. D. A 90-minute nap.

I frowned(皱眉) at myself in the dressing-room mirror. I was wearing white tights and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes (雪花) in my dance school’s Winter Wonderland show. I’d learned in science class that no two snowflakes are alike, but all of us snowflakes were wearing the same clothes.
“What’s wrong, Avery ” Grandma looked at me in the mirror. “You love to dance.”
I used to love to dance. But Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Christine. Christine got to wear a blue leotard and a feathery skirt. And she got to do a dance on stage all by herself. But the snowflakes just had to run and spin to look like a strong snowstorm.
I whispered, “No one would notice if I wasn’t there. You came all this way, but now you won’t be able to tell me apart from the other snowflakes.” Grandma was about to speak. Then something outside the window caught her eyes. She took my hand and my coat to the outside. It was snowing. Big swirling flakes. Grandma took a deep breath and said “In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains.”
I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently, like it looked new to me. I saw snowflakes flying through the air in different directions, shining brightly in the light. So many snowflakes coming together to create something magical. “Snow changes the way the whole world looks,” I said. Grandma nodded. We watched the snow for a few more minutes, even though our toes were turning to ice. Then the wind settled down and the last flakes melted(融化) away. “Aloha,” Grandma whispered to the sky. “Aloha” can mean many things, including “love”, “hello” and “good-bye”. “I don’t know when I’ll see something like that again.”
“I do,” I said. I took Grandma Lani’s hand and pulled her back inside.
When the stage lights came up and the music started, I spun and ran with all of the other snowflakes. I didn’t care if Grandma Lani could see me. I was dancing for my grandma to see snowflakes!
51. How did I feel about my part in the show
A. Excited. B. Uncertain. C. Unhappy. D. Angry.
52. I felt like being in the show at last because ____________.
A. I loved to dance very much B. I became more important in it
C. I wanted to show my talent D. I wanted to make my grandma happy
53. We can infer(推断) from the text that ___________.
A. I was first given the part of the Snow Queen B. Grandma would like to see snow again
C. it doesn’t snow at all where Grandma lived D. my parents didn’t come to the show

Garbage sorting (分类) is a big topic worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it.
Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a"green account(账户)"service for its residents (居民). Account holders get points by correctly sorting their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.
Wet waste is also known as household waste. "They are things you don't want but that pigs can eat, "Guangzhou Daily explained. Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.
Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs(荧光灯泡). Finally, any waste that's not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the "dry waste" bin.
Many other Chinese cities are also using this method to sort their garbage. For example, Shenzhen has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study.
China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it's never too late to learn how to sort your trash properly and protect the environment.
If you don't sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill(垃圾填埋场)and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.
54. How does Shanghai encourage people to sort their garbage
A. Give residents a chance of exchanging other waste products with each other.
B. Pay people who sort city trash and protect the environment correctly.
C. Create a "green account" service for its residents with the help of Alipay.
D. Ask residents to actively study waste-sorting guidebooks.
55. Which of the following would be considered as wet waste
A. metal B. glass C.bulbs D. leftover food
56. Which of the following statements is TRUE
A.Landfills can be used for moving away garbage completely.
B. Garbage sorting system has been in use since 2012.
C. Students in big cities must have waste-sorting lessons in schools.
D. Lots of work needed to be done in Chinese garbage sorting.
57. What can we know from the last paragraph
A. A landfill never takes up large areas.
B. People should sort their garbage properly to protect the environment.
C. All kinds of waste can do harm to the environment.
D. People can bury their garbage everywhere.

In July, 2021, China introduced the “double reduction (双减)” policy. It hopes to reduce students’ learning burden (负担) by reducing homework and after-school classes. One month has passed since the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”
According to Shen, teachers now teach at a much slower pace (节奏). Students have enough time to process new knowledge. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms (蚯蚓) in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books.”
For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called ‘leadership development (领导力发展)’ where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond academic (学业的) study,” said Zhang.
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Besides my progress, more importantly, each exam shows my weak points as well,” Zhang said.
Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind your peers (同龄人),” he said.
