My daughter is a smart kid but she'd never read books for pleasure.
When I faced this truth a few months ago, it felt like a parenting failure. Certainly, my daughter's having landed a smartphone last year is part of the problem. I could see that what my daughter was looking for, like so many her age, was escape. To me, that felt developmentally appropriate. The problem was that the easiest way for her to find escape was to dive into the addictive chaos of her smartphone.
So I campaigned. I told her she needed to read because novels are the best way to learn about how people's insides work. She said she could learn more from watching the people she followed on social media, who were all about spilling their insides.
I could not win our debates, I realized, because few of my daughters' arguments against reading seemed wrong to me. Yes, reading is a way to broaden your universe and discover new worlds—but so is the entire Internet.
So I decided to cut through all the reasoning with a cold, hard practicality:cash. I told my 12-year-old I would pay her $ 100 if she finished the book I picked for her within a month.
We then embarked on a beach holiday. And before the seventh day was done, my daughter had finished the book. When we got back home, she asked for the sequel, and then finished it in about two weeks—at no extra charge.
It actually worked! But will this lead to her reading "Little Women" To tearing through "Catcher in the Rye" and "White Teeth" Will it result in a long reading life full of night-stand piles of books
I don't know. What I do know is that together, we finally opened a new door for her to the printed page:a quiet personal place that I imagine—I hope—will serve her for a lifetime. That feels like the best money I ever spent.
24.How did the author feel about her daughter's attachment to smartphones
A.She found it an ideal escape. B.She considered it to be her fault.
C.She regarded it as understandable. D.She blamed it on her daughter's peers.
25.Why did the author give up trying to persuade her daughter

C.The Internet offered broader experiences.
D.Her daughter's arguments made some sense.
26.What does the underlined word "sequel" in paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Plan. B.Reward. C.Warm-up. D.Follow-up.
27.Why does the author mention "Little Women" and other books in paragraph 7
A.To present her plan. B.To voice her concern.
C.To show her delight. D.To justify her strategy.

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to handle difficulties calmly while others let small problems ruin their entire day This difference often comes down to how we respond to challenges. American social psychologist Leon Festinger proposed a famous theory later known as "Festinger's Law", which states that 10 percent of life's events are beyond your control, but 90 percent is within your control.
To explain this, let's examine two events. First, imagine a business professional who has an important presentation. On the way to work, they spill coffee on his shirt. If he reacts with frustration, rushes angrily, and arrives hurriedly, his presentation may suffer due to his distracted state. Now, consider an alternative response:he calmly cleans up, changes clothes, and uses the extra time in transit to review his notes. The initial problem is the same, but the outcomes differ dramatically because of his reactions.
The influences of Festinger's Law extend beyond individual situations to interpersonal relationships as well. In family conflicts, for instance, an unpleasant response to a minor disagreement can increase tensions, while a patient, understanding approach often leads to resolution. Similarly, in team projects, how members respond to setbacks—whether with blame or constructive problem-solving—can determine the group's ultimate success.
What makes this principle particularly valuable is its universal applicability. Whether dealing with academic pressures, workplace challenges, or personal relationships, the common thread is that our reactions often matter more than the problems themselves. By cultivating self-awareness and emotional regulation, we can significantly improve our ability to navigate life's unavoidable difficulties.
Developing this skill requires practice. It involves pausing before reacting, assessing situations objectively, and consciously choosing productive responses. Over time, this approach becomes habitual, leading to better outcomes and reduced stress. Festinger's Law ultimately teaches us while we can't control everything that happens to us, we can always control how we respond—and that makes all the difference.
28.Why does the author pose a question at the beginning
A.To emphasize the Law's difficulties.
B.To rate readers' psychology knowledge.
C.To create a personal connection to the topic.
D.To introduce Dr. Festinger's life experiences.
29.What is the main lesson from the coffee spill example
A.Spare clothes should always be ready.
B.Your reaction matters more than the problem.
C.Business people face many challenges.
D.Small problems can ruin your whole day.
30.What is the significant value of Festinger's Law
A.It helps people to avoid life's challenges.
B.It provides useful guidance for different life situations.
C.It encourages us to focus on the things we can't control.
D.It suggests most problems are less serious than they seem.
31.What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A.The methods to practice Festinger's Law.
B.The occasions to control personal feelings.
C.The benefits of reducing stress.
D.The impact of immediate reactions.

Scientists have reported that Antarctica's sea ice is at a record low level. That's worrying because the sea ice is an important part of the Earth's cooling system. It's not yet clear if the low sea ice level is temporary, or part of a changing climate pattern.
Every year, the sea ice at the South Pole goes through a cycle of melting and freezing. In the summer, the huge masses of sea ice melt to their smallest point. Over the colder winter months, the sea ice grows and grows until it covers an incredibly wide area. Usually, the sea ice covers the greatest area (its "maximum extent") around September 23, as winter ends at the South Pole.
Scientists have been measuring the area of the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost unaffected by the changing weather conditions experienced in other parts of the globe. In fact, until recent years, Antarctica's sea ice area mainly set records for growing. That began to change around 2016. Now, for several years, the area of Antarctica's sea ice has been shrinking(缩小).
This year, the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reports that Antarctica's sea ice reached its maximum extent on September 10—almost two weeks earlier than normal. And the sea ice was at a new record low—not just by a little bit, but by a lot.
The new low record has scientists worried. The sea ice is important, because it helps cool the planet. When it's frozen, sea ice reflects sunlight back out into space. But when the sea ice melts, the water left behind is darker, and absorbs more heat. The concern is that the melting sea ice could start a cycle that might cause even more ice to melt.
Scientists are working hard to better understand Antarctica. They don't know yet if this is just a short-term problem, or if it's part of a long-term shift toward less sea ice in Antarctica.
32.Which aspect of the low sea ice level makes scientists confused
A.Its causes. B.Its effects.
C.Its smallest point. D.Its changing trend.
33.What do scientists find about the sea ice in Antarctica
A.The covering area remains stable.
B.The covering area once expanded.
C.It's been consistently shrinking since 1979.
D.It's been unaffected by changeable weather.
34.Why are scientists worried about the new low record of the sea ice
A.It may result in more ice melting.
B.It could change the color of the sea water.
C.It may get more sunlight reflected into space.
D.It could cause cooler temperatures in Antarctica.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Changing Climate Patterns in Antarctica
B.The Threats to Earth's Cooling System
C.Antarctica's Sea Ice at a Record Winter Low
D.The Mystery of Antarctica's Melting Sea Ice

Have you ever started your day feeling unbeatable, only to feel worn down by the time you get into bed 36 Try the following routines to help you sail through your day.
Practise gratitude. As you wake up, whether naturally or through your alarm, pause for a few seconds. 37 It may be a photograph of someone you love, your stylish new bedside table, or just being alive and being offered a new day. Take in the positivity and bathe in it for a few moments before continuing your day.
Exhale(呼出)your tension. If you feel anxious or stressed as you wake up, take a few minutes to do an exercise to deal with the tension. Stand tall and bring both hands to your chest. Inhale, and then exhale as you open your arms and reach down to touch the floor. This will stretch your body and oxygenate your brain. 38
Check in with yourself. On your way to work, take a minute to "check in" with yourself. Think through your goals for the day. 39 Allow yourself to feel the positivity associated with those achievements. This visualization exercise is a simple way to build positive intention, create focus, and boost your motivation and confidence for the day.
40 Be aware of not automatically reaching for your phone to check emails or social media as it can put you into a reactive mode rather than keeping your mind clear to choose how you want to go about in your day, and how you intend to respond instead of just reacting to events and people. The more you are able to stay centered and connected to yourself, the less likely you will stress out.
A.Brighten your day.
B.Respond, don't react.
C.Teach the body to sense it is safe.
D.And imagine yourself completing them well.

Sunshine Valley High School prepared to celebrate its 100th birthday, and the drama club planned a special play for it.
Mrs. Collins, the librarian, told them there might be old scripts(剧本)in the library's upper storage area. So on a cool November morning, several club members went to look. Among them were Mia, a junior who loved writing, Ethan, a senior who was good with cameras, and Lila, the club president who hoped to direct plays.
Mia reached for a dusty shelf. Suddenly, a loose page fell. It was a handwritten scene from a play called Starlight Dreams. Under the text was a note:"Act 2, Scene 3—Clara meets her future self under the oak tree(橡树), legs tired but eyes bright, determined to keep going even when the way forward gets hard to see..." It was signed by "Elena Marquez, 1972". Mia saw a leather-bound notebook next to where the page had been and pulled it out—it was Elena's diary.
They carefully opened the diary. One entry said, "July 5th, 1973. The doctor says I need to rest—no more late nights writing, no more rehearsals(排练). But I keep re-reading Clara's lines:'You don't stop just because the wind blows hard.' Maybe one day, someone will finish what I started. "They realized Elena, a former student, had gotten very sick and left school, never finishing her script.
Mrs. Collins came over, surprised. "Elena was a very talented drama student. She had to leave school because of her illness and never came back. No one knew she left these here," she said. The students felt sad for Elena. "We can finish her play for the school's 100th birthday!" they all agreed.
For two weeks, they worked after school. Mia finished the script, still keeping Clara as the main character. Lila directed the actors in rehearsals, and Ethan made simple sets based on Elena's notes. Mrs. Collins found Elena's address from old yearbooks and invited her to watch the play.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the celebration day, the school hall was full of people. Elena stood up and ran to the stage excitedly.

On the celebration day, the school hall was full of people. The play started. Clara, the main character, faced many problems, but she didn't give up. The audience watched carefully, their eyes fixed on the stage. When Clara stood under the oak tree in the end, saying "I'll keep going, no matter how hard it gets.", everyone clapped hard. Suddenly, a voice shouted, "Good job!" It was Elena, sitting in the back row. Her eyes were shining with tears, and her hands were shaking. The applause got even louder as everyone turned to look at her.
Elena stood up and ran to the stage excitedly. "Thank you," she said, voice shaking. "Those lines 'determined to keep going even when the way forward gets hard to see' are mine. I dreamed of acting in my own play, but the illness made me stop. I thought my story with Clara ended. However, you brought us both back." She hugged each student, explaining her dreams revived. The students felt warm—they gave a forgotten dream a second chance, realizing small kindnesses bridge years, and that dreams, however long delayed, are always worth remembering.
