The Rift House primary school in Hartlepool gives all its children free breakfasts, PE kits and stationery (文具), but beds were a stretch too far. However, that is about to change thanks to a charitable project led by another local head, which was launched last week and aims to deliver 10,000 new beds to children in the Tees Valley in the next three years.
Mark Tilling, head of a secondary school in Hartlepool, has worked with local businesses and run fund-raising events to raise 70,000 to get the Tees Valley project off the ground. He has partnered with Zarach, a local charity, which has given thousands of beds to poor children. The fact that this is needed at all makes Tilling angry. “In the 21st century, we shouldn’t be talking about kids without food or beds,” he said. “How do we get good results for children in school if they don’t have beds to sleep in ”
In the Tees Valley project, schools will refer families that they know are in need of a bed for their kids. A lot of those they will be helping here are the working poor, who aren’t on benefits and don’t have any services supporting them. Each new bed the charity gives out, designed to last the child for eight years, also comes with a duvet (羽绒被) , bedding, new nightclothes and toiletries. McGrath, the project leader, explained, “Some parents don’t have a washing machine to wash bedding, or they may struggle to get things dry in a house that is already damp.” In Hartlepool, the first new beds went out to “delighted” children from the warehouse last week.
Eddie Huntington, an education expert, said that schools are in a good position to spot signs that families are seriously struggling with poverty. “When other people can walk away, schools can’t,” he said. “Teachers and pastoral (生活辅导的) workers in schools are now at the heart of social care, whether we like it or not.”
24. What does Mark Tilling think of kids lacking beds today
A. Unacceptable. B. Doubtful. C. Strange. D. Awkward.
25. What can we know about the beds offered by Tees Valley
A. They are mostly second-hand beds.
B. They are equally given to most families.
C. They are equipped with additional items.
D. They are designed for medium-height kids.
26. What role do teachers and pastoral workers play
A. They manage financial aid programs.
B. They evaluate academic performances.
C. They organize after-class activities for students.
D. They help identify families in financial trouble.
27. In which column of a newspaper may the text appear
A. Finance. B. Education. C. Health. D. Culture.

Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more Surprisingly, the answer is Person B. This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.
28. Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience
A. To illustrate a dilemma in making choices.
B. To suggest a way of striking up friendships.
C. To stress the importance of strategic requests.
D. To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect.
29. What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors
A. Reducing the tension caused by social contact.
B. Increasing the chance of getting help in return.
C. Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts.
D. Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust.
30. What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4
A. Selfless. B. Impolite. C. Aggressive. D. Responsible.
31. What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect
A. It makes little sense. B. It applies to most cultures.
C. It has situational limitations. D. It has great practical significance.

Indoor food growing operations are seeing both successes and failures in the United States. Some companies in the food industry are investing(投资) even as competitors fail.
California-based Plenty Unlimited this summer began working on $300 million indoor plants, while Kroger announced that it would be increasing its availability of vertically(垂直地) farmed produce. Meanwhile, two indoor farming companies that got strong backing—New Jersey’s AeroFarms and Kentucky’s AppHarvest—filed for financial failure and reorganization. And a five-year-old company in Detroit, Planted Detroit, shut its doors this summer.
The industry changes do not worry Jacob Portillo, a grower with Eden Green Technology, an indoor farming company. “The fact that other people are failing and other people are succeeding is going to happen in any industry you go to,” he said.
Indoor farming refers to growing crops indoors, which experts sometimes call “controlled environment agriculture”. There are different methods. One method called vertical farming involves putting produce from floor to ceiling, often under artificial lights and with the plants growing in nutrient-enriched water. Other growers are trying very large greenhouses, indoor beds of soil in big buildings and using special robots for parts of the farming process.
Supporters say growing indoors uses less water and land and permits food to be grown closer to consumers, saving on transport. Indoor growing is also a way to protect crops from increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change.
But critics question the sustainability (可持续性) of operations that can require a lot of energy for artificial lights. And they say paying for that light can make profitability impossible. Curt Covington of AgAmerica Lending, a private investment company centered on agriculture, is not convinced that indoor farming operations can work—except in special cases. Given the high cost of indoor operations, Covington said, “It’s just hard to be very profitable.”
32. What is Jacob Portillo’s attitude to the indoor food growing industry
A. Positive. B. Worried. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
33. What can we learn about indoor farming
A. It takes a lot of manpower to take care of plants.
B. It means growing plants in water instead of soil.
C. It protects crops from increasingly extreme weather.
D. It is different from controlled environment agriculture.
34. Why did Curt Covington question indoor farming operations
A. They produce little food. B. They carry great cost.
C. They need sunlight. D. They lack investors.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. What Types of Food Can Be Grown Indoors
B. How Can You Grow Food Indoors Without Soil
C. Indoor Farming Companies Take Agriculture Indoors
D. Indoor Food Growing Operations Face an Uncertain Future

When it comes to selecting a camper van(房车), the options are as varied as the adventures they promise. With so many models and features on the market, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by choices ranging from compact vans to fully-equipped motorhomes. 36 . To narrow down your selection and find the perfect match for your travel style, here’s what to keep in mind .
Size Matters — But Bigger Isn’t Always Better
37 . Do you need enough space for a family of four, or is it just you and a partner hitting the road Larger campers offer more comfort and storage, but they can be harder to park, especially in tight spots or remote locations. Smaller camper vans, while more fuel-efficient and maneuverable (操纵灵活的), may lack facilities like full kitchens or bathrooms. Consider how much time you’ll spend inside versus outdoors — this can help determine the right balance between space and practicality.
Off-Grid (离网) Capabilities
If your idea of adventure involves getting off the beaten path, look for a camper van with off-grid capabilities. 38 . These features allow you to stay longer in remote areas without connecting to external power or water sources. Additionally, some models come with strengthened suspensions for rough area, making them ideal for national parks or backcountry exploration.
39
Your budget will play a big role in determining feasibility. 40 . Consider buying used or opting for a basic model to customize later. Ex-rental vehicles may have higher mileage but are typically well-maintained. Don’t forget to factor in insurance, maintenance, and storage costs — these can add up quickly. If financing, compare loan terms and interest rates to avoid unexpected expenses.
A. Budget Considerations
B. The first thing to consider is size
C. Make a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves
D. This might include larger water tanks, solar panels, and tires
E. New camper vans can be pricey, especially with high-end features
F. More functions increase vehicle weight, affecting fuel efficiency and handling
G. But by focusing on your specific needs, you can find the one to suit your lifestyle

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she wrote an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s pleading(恳求的) words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to pick up the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she yelled, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished(消失). Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents ” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.

1. 续写词数应为150 个左右;

D

The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I…I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father’s brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie Or could it have… ” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this out together.”
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.

根据For entry中“Register Online: All visitors to United Nations Headquarters must register on the United Nations Security Website prior to arrival.
根据第二段“In the 21st century, we shouldn’t be talking about kids without food or beds(在21世纪,我们不应该谈论没有食物和床位的孩子。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段“Each new bed the charity gives out, designed to last the child for eight years, also comes with a duvet (羽绒被) , bedding, new nightclothes and toiletries. (该慈善机构发放的每张新床都是为孩子设计的,可以使用8年,同时还配有羽绒被、床上用品、新的睡衣和洗漱用品。)”可知,慈善机构提供的每张新床都配备了羽绒被、床上用品、新睡衣和洗漱用品等额外物品。故选C项。
26. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Eddie Huntington, an education expert, said that schools are in a good position to spot signs that families are seriously struggling with poverty. “When other people can walk away, schools can’t,” he said. “Teachers and pastoral (生活辅导的) workers in schools are now at the heart of social care, whether we like it or not.”(教育专家埃迪·亨廷顿(Eddie Huntington)表示,学校处于有利地位,可以发现家庭正在严重贫困中挣扎的迹象。
根据文章第一段中的“Surprisingly, the answer is Person B. This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect. (令人惊讶的是,答案是B型这种人性的怪癖被称为本·富兰克林效应。)”和第二段的“Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly.
根据文章第三段中的“Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable.(一些心理学家称之为认知失调。同时持有两种相互矛盾的思想是很难的。这让我们感到不舒服。)”可知,人们倾向于喜欢寻求帮助的人是因为认知失调,即避免持有矛盾的想法带来的不适。故选C。
30. A词句猜测题。根据划线词前文“One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others.(2015年的一项研究发现,更确切地说,这是请求所传达的亲和动机。也就是说,我们人类希望与他人保持良好的关系,而实现这一目标的一种方式就是帮助他人。)”以及下文“We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.(我们喜欢成为有用的人,推而广之,我们喜欢那些给我们这样做机会的人。这是我们的基因。)”可推断,划线词所在句说明人类希望通过帮助他人来保持良好的关系,这解释了无私的行为,因此推断画线词与selfless“无私的”意思相近。故选A。
根据文章最后一段中的“Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.(然而,我们对本·富兰克林效应还有很多不了解的地方。
根据第三段“The industry changes do not worry Jacob Portillo, a grower with Eden Green Technology, an indoor farming company. “The fact that other people are failing and other people are succeeding is going to happen in any industry you go to,” he said. ( Jacob Portillo是伊甸园绿色科技公司的一名种植者,该公司是一家室内农业公司。他说:“别人失败,别人成功的情况在任何行业都会发生。”)”可推断,Jacob Portillo对室内食物种植业持“肯定”的态度。故选A。
根据第五段“Indoor growing is also a way to protect crops from increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change. (室内种植也是一种保护作物免受气候变化引起的日益极端天气影响的方法)”可知,室内农业保护作物免受日益极端的天气影响。故选C。
34. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Given the high cost of indoor operations, Covington said, “It’s just hard to be very profitable.” (考虑到室内运营的高成本,Covington说,“很难盈利。”)”可知,Covington质疑室内农业的运营是因为其成本太高。故选B。
35. 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Indoor food growing operations are seeing both successes and failures in the United States. Some companies in the food industry are investing (投资) even as competitors fail. (在美国,室内食品种植有成功也有失败。食品行业的一些公司在竞争对手失败的情况下仍在投资)”结合文章主要说明了室内食品种植的现状以及人们对室内种植的看法,和室内种植不确定的前景。故D选项“室内食品种植面临不确定的未来”最符合文章标题。故选D。

G 空前的句子描述了选择露营车时选项繁多,容易让人不知所措:“With so many models and features on the market, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by choices ranging from compact vans to fully-equipped motorhomes.”;空后的句子引入了如何缩小选择范围的方法:“To narrow down your selection and find the perfect match for your travel style, here’s what to keep in mind.”。选项G“But by focusing on your specific needs, you can find the one to suit your lifestyle.”(但通过关注您的特定需求,您可以找到适合生活方式的那一款)作为过渡句,完美衔接了前文的困惑感和后文的解决方案,强调了“关注需求”这一核心方法,与后文的“keep in mind”形成逻辑连贯。故选G。

39. A 空后句子直接讨论预算的作用:“Your budget will play a big role in determining feasibility.”。 故选A。
40. E 空前句子强调了预算的重要性:“Your budget will play a big role in determining feasibility.”;空后句子提供了预算相关的具体建议:“Consider buying used or opting for a basic model to customize later.”。选项E“New camper vans can be pricey, especially with high-end features.”(新的露营车可能很昂贵,尤其是具有高端功能的)解释了为什么预算重要,并自然引出后文的省钱建议(如购买二手),符合语境。故选E。

W: Good evening, my friends! Welcome to Animal House! There’s news about elephants. Thirty-five Asian elephants have been performing every night in a circus. Now they’re ready to retire. The Asian elephants were formerly under the care of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. They’re now being welcomed to a 2, 500 acre Florida Reserve. There they can wander among their favorite habitats — wetlands, grasslands and a forest and play with water in 11 different waterholes. The White Oak Conservation Refuge, located in Yulee, was set up to give home to the retired elephants. They will become the largest herd of Asian elephants in the Western Hemisphere. The 4-square mile refuge is the best place for these elephants because they’ve been raised by humans and are not equipped to survive in the wild. The first group of elephants will be transported in pairs from the circus to their new home next Monday. After they arrive there, they will be joined by another group. That’s all for today’s program.

D

根据最后一段“Eddie Huntington, an education expert, said that schools are in a good position to spot signs that families are seriously struggling with poverty. “When other people can walk away, schools can’t,” he said. “Teachers and pastoral (生活辅导的) workers in schools are now at the heart of social care, whether we like it or not.”(教育专家埃迪·亨廷顿(Eddie Huntington)表示,学校处于有利地位,可以发现家庭正在严重贫困中挣扎的迹象。“当其他人可以走开时,学校不能,”他说。“不管我们喜欢与否,学校的教师和牧师现在是社会关怀的核心。”)”可知,教师和生活辅导人员能够发现家庭严重贫困的迹象,即他们帮助识别有经济困难的家庭。故选D项。

C篇【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了本·富兰克林效应。
28. D推理判断题。根据文章第一段中的“Surprisingly, the answer is Person B.

根据划线词前文“One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey.

故选A。

39. A 空后句子直接讨论预算的作用:“Your budget will play a big role in determining feasibility.”。 故选A。
