Reading
Susan Luo, an adviser for teenagers, has received a letter asking for some advice. Read her reply and discuss the questions.
1. What is Worried Friend’s problem
Worried Friend is worried that his or her friend, Chen Lei, plays computer games too often and spends too much time online.
2. What are Susan Luo’s advice
Worried Friend can talk to his friend about his behaviour and encourage his friend to try new hobbies.
Do you think Ms Luo’s advice is useful Why or why not
Perhaps the advice is useful, because it is always good to talk to a friend about his or her problems and offer advice.
What other kinds of advice would you give
I would tell Chen Lei that he should spend his time more productively with an eye on his future. For example , instead of playing computer games, he could learn computer programming. He might become a great figure in that field when he’s older.

Use what you have learnt to write a letter of advice to one of the teenagers below.
Choose one of the three situations and discuss his/her problem. List possible suggestions and reasons.
Suggestion Reason
I recommend that he should talk with his parents face to face.
He is not a small child any longer, and he needs to be listened to.
Why not talk with them regularly on the Internet and learn some new skills.
Her parents also miss her and talking with them is good for all of them. Learning some new skills helps her spend time wisely .
Asking her help him with his studies will be useful, but only talk about studies.
It is more important to focus on studying as a teenager.
Draft your letter according to the outline below.
Writing
Write the date and greet the reader.
Show the reader that you know what the problem is.
Tell the reader that you understand how he/she feels.
Tell the reader what you think he/she should do.
Explain your reason(s).
Tell the reader what you think will happen.
Close and sign the letter.

Dear Xu Ting,
You wrote that you always feel lonely after school because your parents work in another city. I quite understand how you feel. It is common for teenagers to feel lonely when they live away from their parents.
I think you can try joining a volunteer group that helps other people. This will give you a chance to meet and be around others. It will also help you realize that you are not alone in having problems and that many other people have problems, too. Helping other people also makes us feel better. You can also connect with your parents online. Just because your parents are far away, it doesn’t mean you can’t talk to them. I’m sure that you’ll make new friends and get a chance to speak to your parents more often. This will help drive away your lonliness.
Best wishes,
Susan Luo
