The Many Sides of Me
Introducing myself used to mean stating my name, age, and hometown. But as I grow older, I realize that such facts are just the cover of a book; they don’t reveal the story inside. My name is Wang Lei, and this is a glimpse into the more complex picture of who I am.
I am a collection of contrasts. In the classroom, I am often the quiet observer. I enjoy listening to discussions, analyzing (分析) different viewpoints before forming my own opinion. My teachers sometimes wish I would speak up more, but I believe thoughtful silence is more valuable than thoughtless chatter. This quiet side of me loves the world of books, where I can be a fearless adventurer or a detective (侦探) solving mysteries, all from the comfort of my room.
However, to label me as “shy” would be a mistake. On the basketball court, a different person emerges. The quiet thinker transforms into a loud, strategic (战略的) team player. I communicate constantly, calling for passes and directing defense. The adrenaline rush (肾上腺素飙升) of a fast break and the collective joy of a well-earned victory are feelings I crave. This energetic side needs the court as much as my quiet side needs the library.
These two worlds are not separate; they feed into each other. The strategic thinking I develop on the court helps me plan my arguments in a debate. Conversely, the patience and focus I gain from reading for hours help me stay calm under pressure during a close game. I used to think I had to choose one identity—the scholar or the athlete. Now I understand that they coexist (共存), making me a more balanced individual.
So, “who am I ” is a question with an answer that evolves. I am not just Wang Lei, the student. I am the thinker, the player, the friend, and the dreamer. I am a mosaic (马赛克), still being pieced together, and that is the most exciting part of all.
11.Why does Wang Lei compare basic personal facts to “the cover of a book”
A.Because he loves reading books very much.
B.Because he thinks they are boring and unimportant.
C.Because they are a simple start but don’t show his true character.
D.Because he wants to write a book about himself one day.
12.What is the main advantage of Wang Lei’s “quiet” side in the classroom
A.It makes his teachers like him more.
B.It allows him to avoid answering difficult questions.
C.It helps him to think deeply before speaking.
D.It gives him more time to read his novels.
13.The word “crave” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A.fear B.remember C.describe D.desire strongly
14.How do Wang Lei’s different interests help each other
A.Reading about sports makes him a better player.
B.Skills from one area, like strategy and patience, are useful in the other.
C.Being an athlete makes him more popular so he can discuss books with more people.
D.He has to manage his time well between studying and playing basketball.
15.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Playing basketball is more important than studying for a balanced life.
B.A person’s identity can be multi-layered and integrated, not a single label.
C.It is difficult for a student to be good at both sports and academics.
D.The author is confused about who he really wants to be in the future.

My best friend is Tom. He is two months older than me, but we are in the same grade because he was born in December. Tom is taller and stronger than me—he practices basketball every afternoon after school. He is also more outgoing than I am. But Tom isn’t just good at sports. He does well in schoolwork too. His Maths is better than mine, but my English is better than his. Last term, I lost my new watch that my parents gave me for my birthday. I was so sad that I cried. Tom helped me look for it everywhere—we checked the classroom, the playground and even the school bus. Finally, we found it under the tree near the playground. He never laughs at me when I make mistakes; instead, he encourages me to try again.
I think a good friend should be like Tom—kind, helpful and honest. I hope our friendship will last forever.

Butterflies are some of the most beautiful insects in the world. However, what interests the scientists most is not their beautiful looks, but how they sense (感觉) nature. They use their senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste to find food, lay eggs in good places, and avoid hungry enemies.
Butterflies have large compound (复合的) eyes. No matter where the things are, they can see them without turning their heads. Like most insects, butterflies are very nearsighted (近视的). They usually notice a sea of flowers than a single plant. Butterflies do not “see” colours such as red, green, and yellow. They are colour-blind. But they can sense sunlight, which tells them where the sun is shining. The light on many flowers guides butterflies to honey.
How do butterflies smell Butterflies have a very well-developed sense of smell, but it is not in their noses, since they don’t have one. Sense organs (器官) are in their feet, and many other parts of the body. They can help butterflies find their favourite flower honey food.
★ . Butterflies’ feet have sense organs that can taste the sugar in flower honey. They let the butterflies know if there is something tasty. Some female butterflies taste the plants carefully to find places to lay eggs. They feed their babies using a long tube (管道), and they get all their food from this tube as well.
Butterflies don’t have ears. Instead, they “hear” sounds through their wings. Sensory hairs are very helpful and important. For example, the hairs give butterflies information about the wind when they’re flying. And where there is rain, the hairs can also tell butterflies.
21.What interests scientists most about butterflies
A.Their beautiful colors and patterns. B.Their ability to avoid hungry enemies.
C.The way they sense the world around them. D.Their unique methods of laying eggs.
22.In paragraph 3, the word “They” refers to ________.
A.butterflies B.sense organs C.butterflies’ feet D.flowers
23.Which of the following can be put in ★
A.However, butterflies can also taste with their wings .
B.For example, butterflies have a good sense of hearing.
C.In fact, butterflies use their wings to smell.
D.Besides smelling, butterflies’ feet are also used for tasting.
24.How do butterflies “hear” sounds
A.They have small ears on their heads. B.They use their sense organs in the feet.
C.They sense sounds through their wings. D.They use their long feeding tube.
25.Which would be the best theme picture of the passage
A. B.
C. D.
