On the first day of school this year, Joseph Riley, the principal (校长) of Pocahontas County High School in West Virginia, dropped by the band classroom and told the 38 students that the school had been unable to find a band teacher after the former teacher left over the summer to take a teaching position at a different school.
“I said that we'd have to get them into other classes,” Riley said. Then he gave the students a second option. If the teens wanted to keep the Warriors band going and teach themselves, the school would support them. Most students decided to take a different class, but ten students took him up on the offer. The guys didn't give up faced with unpleasant situations and they found the courage to keep the band going.
The ten band members elected Hailey Fitzgerald, 17, as band director, and then invited two teachers from the school to serve as advisors. Math teacher Jennifer Nail-Cook agreed to offer support.“They are an impressive bunch of kids,” Nail-Cook said. “We are all very proud of them.” Band students practice the school song every day,and they have learned to work together, Fitzgerald said. They also had to solve a problem when they realized they had too many drummers (鼓手).
The band's latest performance was at their school's Homecoming Day. “When we do our school song, that's probably everybody's favorite,” said Jadyn Lane, 17. “To see so many people supporting and cheering us on, that's a huge motivator.” Several school alumni (校友) volunteered to join the students in the stands on Homecoming Day. “Our school is the heart of the community,” Riley said. “Everyone is really appreciative of these kids working together to make sure our school still has a band. It's unbelievable to witness the progress they've made on their own.”
Years from now, Fitzgerald said she imagines she’ll look back on her junior year as band director with pride. “It was never an option for us to quit — we all love it too much,” she said.

In the past, westerners were not familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), but now it is becoming globally popular. According to a government report, TCM has been introduced into 183 countries and regions around the world.
However, westerners only have a little knowledge of TCM. Their understanding of TCM may be limited to acupuncture(针灸), cupping and massage(按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on a U.S. famous swimmer’s back from cupping to relax his muscles and reduce pain became the centre of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.
In fact, Chinese herbs(药草) play a more important role in curing diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. Therefore, it is disappointing to know that although 103 World Health Organisation member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognise Chinese herbal medicine. TCM is much less popular than Western medicine partly due to the slow development of Chinese herbs.
Herbs can be made into pills, powder and soup. The kind of herbs used, their quality, quantity and the processing together determine the effectiveness of the prescription(处方). Compared with Western medicine, which has standardised drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardisation. The chemical composition and functions of its medicine are still unclear and their effects are unstable. Fortunately, standardisation has improved in recent decades and a number of factories are increasingly producing patented TCM drugs.
Another reason why TCM prescription drugs have developed slowly is that it lacks creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicine according to prescriptions handed down from the past. That Chinese chemist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria(疟疾)treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China’s TCM industry.
However, Rome was not built in a day. The current situation cannot be changed within a short time.

A. Westerners know a little about TCM. B. Cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.
C. He was injured in his swimming. D. TCM is very popular among westerners.
9. Why don’t some member countries of WHO recognise Chinese herbal medicine
A. Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases.
B. They only approve the practice of acupuncture.
C. Western medicine is more effective.
D. Medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly.
10. How does the writer feel about the future of TCM
A. Anxious. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Disappointed.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Effectiveness of TCM. B. The Barriers to TCM’s Development.
C. The Weakness of TCM. D. The Future of TCM.

After hours of working, many people experience significant drops in energy and find themselves in desperate need of a recharge. But instead of grabbing a coffee, it may be more worthwhile to take a short sleep break known as a power nap.
A power nap can “provide the refreshment you need if you're struggling to stay alert or haven't had a good night’s sleep,” explains Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist. A power nap “gives people the chance to rest for a short period of time to boost workplace productivity (生产率),”she says, but they are only beneficial when they are done correctly.
How long should a power nap be Sleep experts say that an effective power nap should only last20-30 minutes to increase alertness throughout the day. According to James Maas, a former professor and chair of psychology at Cornell University who invented the term “power nap” more than 50 years ago, “It's an opportunity to shut your eyes, breathe slowly and recharge.”
For most people, 15 minutes should be enough to power through the rest of the work day. However, Maas warns that lengthier naps are counterproductive and even harmful. “Never nap for 60 minutes. If you power nap any time longer than 40 minutes, you’re going to wake up feeling very weak and tired for another hour or so.”
Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist, adds that the best time to take your power nap is between1 p. m. and 3 p. m., because napping any later in the day “can interfere with your sleep at night.”
In contrast to coffee, which is likely to “damage your sleep at night and only offer short term energy for about 30 minutes,” Robbins says a power nap is a healthier alternative to improve workplace performance, strengthen memory and boost creativity.
Harris adds naps have long-term health benefits too, such as improving your mood and aiding in stress management. “Power naps can reduce accidents and mistakes while also improving attention, alertness, concentration and performance. They can even be used effectively to fight sleepy driving when a short nap is taken just before getting behind the wheel,” she says.
12. What did James Maas suggest about a power nap
A. The best time to nap is from 1 p. m. to 3 p. m.
B. The longer you nap, the more refreshed you'll be.
C. It's better to be kept within 15 minutes.
D. Napping too long does more harm than good.
13. Good power naps have the following benefits except________
A. contributing to our refreshment. B. improving our memory and mood.
C. disturbing your sleep at night. D. helping effectively manage stress.
14. How does the author develop the passage
A. By giving definitions. B. By making comparisons.
