Tom looked at his homework, feeling upset. The argument with his dad about using AI still echoed
(回荡 ) in his mind. He realized that his dad was right. Although AI was useful, he would become lazy in
thinking if he used it all the time when doing his homework. He knew he needed to do something.
That evening, Tom nervously entered the living room. “Dad, can we have a talk ” he asked politely.
His dad nodded. Tom admitted (承认), “It was wrong for me to depend on AI for everything. I plan to use it
properly in future.” His dad was glad and gave him some suggestions.
The next morning, he tried to follow his father’s advice. Instead of trusting his usual AI tool, he
opened his notebook and began his own writing. It was slower, but he managed to think by himself. At
lunchtime, he completed a short article—his first honest one in weeks.
Over the week, Tom worked really hard. He used AI only for checking materials, not for ideas. His
dad noticed his progress and encouraged Tom to believe in his own ability and finish it patiently.
On Friday, Tom handed in his history report—written completely by himself. To his surprise, he got
an A and his teacher praised his creative analysis (分析). When Tom told his dad the good news, they shared
a proud smile with each other.
Now, Tom understands: true progress isn’t about shortcuts (捷径). It’s about facing challenges with
courage and honesty.
( ) 21 . Why did Tom feel upset at first

“How are you ” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the US greet each other. 26
It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you ” hopes to hear the
answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you ” isn’t really a question
and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you
agree ”, the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong...” 27 That’s why
the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
28 So it’s normal to “give an excuse” when they want to finish talking with other people.
For example, many conversations on the phone come to an end when one person says “I’ve got to go now.”
Other common excuses, such as “Someone’s at the door” or “Something is burning on the stove”, are also
初三年级英语学科 第 4 页 共 8 页
widely used. 29 Perhaps the person who wants to hang up (挂电话) simply doesn’t want to talk
any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. An excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a conversation, people don’t
say exactly what they are thinking. 30 And, frankly, it’s just part of the game of language.
A. The excuses might be real, or not.
B. But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly.
C. However, “How are you ” is a very unusual question as well.
D. It’s an important way that people try to be polite to each other.
E. If you agree with others all the time, you will be treated nicely.
F. At other times, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking.
