①A new study shows this: children with friends of a different gender (性别) or from other races (种族) are kinder. They are probably act kindly to classmates who are different from them. Having many kinds of friends can help kids understand and care more about each other.
②The study looked at 603 children from schools in the southwestern United States. The children were between 7 and 11 years old. About half of the children were from different racial(种族的) groups.
③For the study, the researchers asked the children to name their best friends. They also asked who they thought were the most helpful classmates. The results showed something interesting. Children with more friends of a different gender were often more helpful. For example, if a boy had many girl friends, the girls in his class thought he was kind and helpful.

But just having friends of other races did not always help them be kinder to classmates of a different gender—unless(除非) they also had friends of that gender.
⑤Sonya Xinyue Xiao, one of the researchers, said her own experiences made her want to do the study. “I was the ‘new’ kid during primary school, middle school, and high school,” she said. She wants to keep learning how children grow to be kind.

When you’re busy with homework and chores, you might not have much time for fun. Here’s how to balance both.
Make a list of your daily activities. 41 For example, do your homework between 8:30 and 9:30, and do the washing between 9:30 and 10:00. In this way, you can have a good understanding of how to spend your time well.
Study always comes first. Some things are less important, so you should get them out of the way first. 42
Use your free time to finish the homework early. 43 The more you do during that time, the less you have to do at home.
44 When you’re doing something, turn off all distractions (干扰). Answering a text message or catching 15 minutes of your favourite show will stop you from doing things well and quickly.
Don’t put off (推迟) your work. Sometimes you don’t want to do housework, so you wait. In fact, some chores like cleaning your room and washing the dishes build up over time. 45
A. Do one thing at a time. B. You can ask for fewer chores. C. They will take you a longer time if you wait. D. Make full use of your free time to finish your homework at school. E. Making small spaces look bigger is not always easy, but it is possible to do it on your own. If your living room feels uncomfortably small, you can follow some tips to make it seem bigger.
Clean up the mess. Do not use more than three pieces of any decoration, for example, no more than three flower vases (花瓶). Cut down the number of things on the floor, such as house plants. Place as many of them as possible on the shelves (架子).
Choose a small dining table. Small tables are not heavy — you can move them with no difficulty, and put them away in other rooms when they are not needed, and this can help to make the living room seem bigger. There is also a new kind of dining table. It takes up very little space and looks nice.
Use a large wall mirror. If you have a wall to decorate, try finding a large wall mirror. You can put it up on the wall of your living room, and it really makes the room look bigger!
Choose bright colors or light ones instead of dark colors when painting the walls. Don’t use dark coloured wallpaper, because it can make the room seem small. If you want to make a room look bigger, try painting it blue. It seems to push the walls back.
