The cop(警察) suddenly slowed his walk. Near the door of a darkened shop a man was standing. As the cop walked toward him, the man spoke quickly.
“It's all right, officer,” he said. “I'm waiting for a friend. Twenty years ago we agreed to meet here tonight. He was my best friend and we grew up together here in New York, like two brothers. I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning, I was to start for the West. He thought New York was the only place on earth. We agreed that night that we would meet here again in twenty years.”
“Interesting,” said the cop. “Have you heard from Jimmy since you went to the West ”
“Yes,” said the man. “But after a year or two, we stopped. The West is big. I moved around everywhere and had to fight for my success. But I know that Jimmy will meet me here if he can. In New York a man doesn't change much. So I came a thousand miles to stand here tonight.”
The waiting man took out a fine watch. “Three minutes to ten,” he said. “It was ten that night when we said goodbye here.”
“I'll go on my way,” the cop said, “I hope your friend comes all right. If he isn't here at ten, are you going to leave ”
“I am not! ” said the man. “I'll wait half an hour, at least. If Jimmy is alive on earth, he' ll be here by that time. Goodbye, officer.”
“Goodbye,” said the cop, and walked away.
About twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long coat came hurrying across the street. “Is that you, Bob ” he asked, doubtfully.

The man from the West stopped suddenly and pulled his arm away. “ You’ re not Jimmy Wells,” he said.
“No, I'm not. You've been under arrest(逮捕) for ten minutes, Bob. Now before we go on to the police station, here's a note for you. You may read it here at the window.”
Bob opened the little piece of paper. His hand began to shake a little as he read.

So here I was, although the two-hour trip was full of fog and rain. After lunch, my daughter requested me to drive her to Barage. As soon as we arrived there, I was amazed by what I saw. Ⅳ读写结合。
Life keeps changing. While some changes are exciting, others may make us feel nervous. Whether we like them or not, changes cannot be avoided(被避免). Have a good understanding of them may make it easier for us to deal with changes.
Many new things happen in life. Some are good choices we make, like joining a team or meeting friends. But some changes might make us feel worried. They can be big things like moving to a new school, a friend moving away or the death of our beloved one. Smaller changes might include having a new teacher or adapting(适应) to the new dishes in the dining hall. All these can create strong emotions(情绪), but that's normal.
Changes can be difficult to deal with because the results are uncertain. Emily Hanlon, a psychologist(心理学家), says: “Our brains like familiar things because they make us feel safe. When something changes, like starting a new school or moving to a new home, it can feel like stepping into the unknown. This makes us worried because we don't know what's coming next. ” Changes can also be hard if we don't feel quite ready for them or we are not in control of whatever is happening.
Life would be boring if nothing changed. Trying new things helps discover what we like and dislike, such as tasting new ice cream flavors(味道) to find our favorites. Changes also help us grow and learn skills. Hanlon says, “ Though changes can be scary, they often bring new experiences, friendships, and strengths. So we should face the changes and believe in ourselves.”
根据语篇与任务要求,在空格处填上适当的短语或句子。

Next, by quoting(引用) the opinions of a psychologist named Emily Hanlon, the writer explains why 2 . According to Hanlon, people always feel safe when they are doing familiar things, so changes make them worried
because they can't 3 . Also, being unable to control the situation also makes changes hard to deal with. At last, the writer tells us that changes can be 4 because they make our lives more interesting and help us grow and learn.

Have you ever bought something and then changed your mind For Alison Jenson, 15, this used to happen several times a week. Alison was a shopaholic(购物狂). She just couldn't stop shopping and she loved special offers.
Alison's bedroom is full of stuff. “I've been to every shop in Birmingham, I think,” says Alison. She picks up some earrings. The labels(标签) are still on them. “These were half price,” she says. “I've never worn them.” Alison's problem wasn't just about jewelry (珠宝). She also bought a lot of clothes, though not many shoes, because they were usually too expensive. She also bought lots of other small things — like20 new covers for her phone. She hasn't used any of them.
According to experts, we all feel excited after we buy something new. For shopaholics, it's a little different. Soon after they buy something, they think they've made a mistake and start to feel unhappy. So they buy themselves something else to feel happier.
Psychologists(心理学家) first described the problems of shopaholics in 1915. However, there was very little research on the subject until recently. Now, doctors think thousands of people suffer from the problem, and the situation is getting worse. There are also more teenage shopaholics now, although most young people don't have enough money to go shopping very regularly.
Alison knew she had a problem. “I used to buy something almost every day. Usually it was something small, but I just needed to buy it,” she says. “I spent money that I got for my birthday, and when I was short of cash, I borrowed money from my friends or my parents. When I couldn't go shopping, I felt anxious. Then one day, my parents just looked at all the stuff in my room and said, ‘This is crazy!’ I knew they were right. I needed some big changes in my life.”
Alison now gets help with her problem and feels she has changed. She no longer thinks she’ s a shopaholic. “When I want to buy something in a shop, I ask myself two questions,” she says. “Do I need it Can I afford(买得起) it The answer to both questions is usually ‘no’, so I walk away. It’ s great!”

Ⅱ语篇研读。
We all know the strange feeling when we watch the time change on a clock without the second hand(指针). The time doesn't seem to be changing because the hands move so slowly. But of course, that isn't true. Time is changing all the time.
Human faces, like clock faces, keep changing too. And, similarly, we can hardly realize that.
However, over thousands of years, huge changes are possible. For example, the human brain tripled(成为三倍) in size. And our faces have become flatter(更平的).
According to scientists, unlike the changes of a clock face, the changes of the human brain are not easy to predict. It is mainly because of the fact that we can now control parts of nature with modern technology.
DJI, the world's leading manufacturer of drones(无人机制造商), produces all kinds of drones and has more than 70% of the world's drone market. Facing sanctions(制裁) from the United States, DJI did not give in, but instead chose to fight head-on by increasing the price. Its founder Wang Tao once said, “I am Chinese. DЛ is a Chinese company, closely connected with the fate(命运) of the country.”

Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea. In2022, things related to tea were added to the UNESCO’ s ICH(非物质文化遗产) list. Three things include knowledge, skills and social practices(习俗) about planting tea, picking tea leaves, making tea by hand, and drinking and sharing tea.
The traditional technology is mainly found in provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Fujian and Hunan. However, the social practices of tea spread around the country.
There are a number of social practices. For example, the host should welcome guests with
boiled tea. Boiling tea started in the Tang Dynasty(618–907). Tea leaves were boiled for a long time and sometimes they were cooked together with different kinds of fruits. Later (1368–1644), a faster way nearly took its place —— steeping(冲泡).
However, now the old way enjoys its popularity again among Chinese young people. They like to sit around a stove(炉子) as they boil tea on it. Then they enjoy the snacks and hot tea. In this way, people can feel more relaxed. As one post on Xiaohongshu says, “It is relaxing to drink hot tea, feel the light wind, and chat with best friends.”
