Twenty years ago on December 26, a 9.1-magnitude(震级) earthquake happened and caused terrible tsunamis across the Indian Ocean, sending waves running into the coasts of 14 countries with great power.
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was one of the deadliest disasters in the history, killing about 230,000 people and affecting(影响) millions.
The earthquake started from the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, on the morning of Boxing Day. Whole towns and villages were swept away as thousands of miles of coastline was destroyed in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Seychelles and Somalia.
The shortness of an early-warning system and the lack of data made it hard for scientists to find out the earthquake’s magnitude and where the waves would hit.
Many were left without warning, and little time to run away. Others had no idea what was happening as the ocean went away, showing the seafloor ——a natural warning sign of a possible tsunami arriving.
Aceh Province of Indonesia, which was closest to the center of the earthquake, was the worst hit with more than 130,000 people killed and 565,000 homeless, while near 200,000 houses were destroyed or damaged.
The shock of the tsunami still exists two decades later with communities that have since rebuilt and families who lost loved ones still suffering from the pain.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called the tragedy a “wake-up call” and has since increased investment in tsunami science and the setting of buoys(浮标) used in tsunami monitoring systems to warn people about these kinds of disasters quicker and more correctly.
23.What time is Boxing Day
A. The day before Christmas Day B. Christmas Day

People often say that the Englishman's home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal to him. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than flats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make them individual(个体的); they can paint them, and change them in any way they like. Most houses have a garden, even if it is a very small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private space of the individual.
People usually like to mark their space. Are you sitting now in your home or on a train Have you marked the space around yourself as yours If you are on the train you may put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you. If you share a flat you may have one corner or chair which is your own.
Once I was travelling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man on my side left me no space of the table at all. I was angry. Maybe he thought that he owned the whole table. I had read a book about non-verbal communication, so I took various papers out of my bag and put them on his briefcase! When I did this, he was shocked. I had invaded(侵犯) his space! A few minutes later I took my papers off his case in order to read them. He immediately moved his case to his side of the table. Of course, it is possible that he just wanted to be helpful to me!
If you are visiting another country you may feel that you don't have any private space. Hotel rooms look much the same in every country in the world. All day long, you share public spaces with other people. You see the local people in their private spaces and you feel lonely and "outside". Local people can create their private spaces by talking about things you don't know about .And you even feel that they like you to be outside them so that they will enjoy being inside even more! This is one of the difficulties of being a traveler! But if you understand it, then it helps you .Haven't you enjoyed being part of a group and "owning" a bit of space
27. The writer was angry as he was traveling on a train to London because______.
A. he had no place to sit B. someone had invaded his "space"
C. People around him were too noisy D. some other people talked about things he didn't know about
28.According to Paragraph 4, the reason why you feel lonely and “outside” is ______.
A. you are alone outside the house B. you are alone and you go outside to have some fun
C. you travel on your own D. you don't belong to that place or that group of people
29.In Paragraph 4, the pronoun “them” refers to "___________".
A. local people B. public houses C. strange spaces D. other countries .
30.The main purpose of the passage is to tell readers to _______.
A. own private spaces by living in houses
B. have one corner of their own in public places
C. realize the importance of "space" in communication
D. create their private spaces by talking with local people
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后面的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并回答问题。选项中有一项为多余选项。
Most of you think that you can see better when your eyes open wider. It sounds right. Your eyes can get a wider view of the world, and more light can enter to make you see the world more clearly. 31 However, people with short-sightedness (近视) may find that the opposite is true. In fact, people with short-sightedness often see things more clearly when they squint (眯眼看).
Why does squinting help people with short-sightedness see more clearly Here’s the reason. Your lens, on the front of your eye, is changing shape all the time. This helps you focus on objects both near and far. Squinting can offer a bit of help to this process. It helps focus light in the right place. 32 It works by controlling the number of light going into eyes.
To see clearly, you need the light focused by the lens to hit the retina —at the back of your eyes as exactly as possible. 33 The lens of the eyes becomes harder as we get older. So it cannot focus light as well as it used to. By squinting, people are actually changing the shapes of their eyes, so that the light focuses correctly on the retina.
Also, a little squinting is not harmful to your eyesight. It’s OK to squint once in a while to see something. 34 If you find yourself doing it all the time, get your eyes checked as soon as possible.
35. What can you do to prevent short-sightedness (请用不超过10词的句子回答问题)

First of all, health comes first. Sleep and eat well so that you can get more energy. It's important for you to get at least eight hours' sleep every night. If you continue studying when you're tired, you'll feel more terrible. Being tired will stop you from thinking clearly. So go to sleep as early as possible every night!
Then,do something to make yourself relaxed, such as listening to music and reading books. Doing sports is also a necessary part in our daily. Try to be happy!
Last but not least, you should learn to communicate effectively. Talk to your parents or your teachers about your trouble. They will be glad to help you. Someone who fully understands you can help you a lot. Writing down what you are thinking about is an excellent way as well.
Come on! Believe in yourself! Everything will be OK.
