Bonnie Blumberg has always known her mother’s love for knitting(针织) was natural. When Bonnie grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, her mother Janice often volunteered to sew costumes for her daughter’s class plays — even for the whole class, staying up late to sew and knit.
Then Janice suffered some small strokes (中风) and three serious ones. In 2017, she lost use of her right side and had to use a wheelchair. Two years ago, when Bonnie sold her mother’s house and moved to a smaller place, she found three unfinished knit sweaters while packing. She knew they were for Janice herself, Bonnie, and Bonnie’s daughter.
Bonnie took the sweaters to a local knitting store, hoping to get them finished. The store workers told her about Loose Ends, an organization that connects people with unfinished crafts from ill or passed loved ones to volunteer finishers for free. Founded two years ago, it has nearly 30,000 volunteers who have finished about 3,500 projects.
Loose Ends linked Bonnie with Anna Minmier, a knitter with 20 years of experience. Anna started working on the sweaters, her fingers moving skillfully as if dancing — a habit she’d had since she began knitting at 9.
“Meeting Anna, all I could do was to hug her tightly,” Bonnie said, tears in her eyes. “This project is so special. I’d have paid a lot for it.” Anna spent months finishing the sweaters. She said she felt happy to be part of this story that connects generations, recalling her own grandmother, once a knitter, who stopped due to arthritis (关节炎).
Janice passed away last September. When Bonnie holds the finished sweaters, she’ll hug the memories her mother started. As Loose Ends co-founder Jennifer Simonic said, “It’s more than kindness. These physical things let people hold their missing loved ones close — and that matters a lot.”
24. What was Janice like according to paragraph 1
A. Caring and devoted. B. Patient and curious.
C. Diligent and ambitious. D. Friendly and careful.
25. What do we know about Loose Ends from the passage
A. It mainly connects local stores with craft lovers.
B. It has finished over 30,000 projects in two years.
C. It helps people complete unfinished crafts without charge.
D. It was founded to train young volunteers in knitting skills.
26. What can we infer from the passage
A. Anna could dance skillfully with her fingers at 9 years old.
B. Anna’s grandmother gave up knitting due to serious strokes.
C. Bonnie paid a large amount of money to get the sweater finished.
D. The finished sweaters will serve as a reminder of Bonnie’s mother.
27. What would be the best title for the passage
A. A Daughter’s Love for Her Mother’s Sweaters.
B. Anna’s Devotion in Finishing Bonnie’s Sweaters.
C. Loose Ends: Connecting Crafters and Volunteers.
D. Finishing Unfinished Knits, Keeping Memories Alive.

For many students, staying awake all night to study is common practice. According to Medical News Today, around 20 percent of students pull all-nighters at least once a month, and about 35 percent stay up past three in the morning once or more weekly.
That being said, staying up all night to study is one of the worst things students can do for their grades. In October of 2022, two MIT professors found a relationship between sleep and test scores: The less students slept during the semester, the worse their scores.
So, why is it that sleep is so important for test scores In the last 20 years, scientists have found that sleep impacts more than just students’ ability to perform well; it improves their ability to learn, memorize, retain (保存), recall, and use their new knowledge to solve problems creatively, which contributes to better test scores.
When learning facts and information, most of what we learn is temporarily stored in a region of the brain called the hippocampus (海马体). Some scientists believe that, like most storage centers, the hippocampus has limited storage capacity. This means, if the hippocampus is full, and we try to learn more information, we won’t be able to.
In one study, a group of 44 participants underwent two sessions of learning, once at noon and again at 6:00 PM. Half of the group was allowed to nap (小睡) between sessions, while the other half took part in standard activities. The researchers found that the group that napped between learning sessions learned just as easily at 6:00 PM as they did at noon. The group that didn’t nap, however, experienced a significant decrease in learning ability.
It’s no surprise that the MIT study previously mentioned revealed no improvement in scores for those who only guarantee good sleep the night before a big test. In fact, the MIT researchers concluded that if students want to see an improvement in their test scores, they have to guarantee good sleep during the entire learning process.
What did the two MIT professors find in 2022
A. Most students were lacking in sleep.
B. Students were under too much pressure.
C. Good sleep improved students’ memory.
D. Insufficient sleep worsened students’ grades.
29. According to some scientists, what will happen if our hippocampus fills up
A. We’ll forget things easily. B. We’ll fail to learn new things.
C. We’ll get ready to think creatively. D. We’ll activate other parts of our brain.
30. What may the MIT researchers advise students to do to improve their test scores
A. Study late before a test. B. Sleep as much as you can.
C. Form good sleep habits. D. Focus on study during the daytime.
31. How does the author try to prove his point
A. By offering research results. B. By providing experts’ views.
C. By analyzing some theories. D. By sharing some experiences.
D
One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. Nowadays millions of people are already turning to ChatGPT and specialist therapy(治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive mental health support.
Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy(同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so-called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species’ defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction.
One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980 and 2019, which shows that the empathizer must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and differentiate between themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person’s feelings aren’t their own while still being able to imagine their experience.
On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify your feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathizers response, which also requires some degree of intuitive(直觉的)awareness of an individual and his situation.
All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chatbots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend.
32. What does the underlined word “ boon” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Trap. B. Prize C. Blessing. D. Challenge.
33. What does the recent analysis show about empathy
A. It calls for clear communication.
B. It starts with emotion identification.
C. It rules out individual difference.
D. It depends on rich imagination.
34. What can AI do according to Paragraph 4
A. Provide data-driven feedback.
B. Recognize one’s real desire.
C. Update large language models.
D. Predict one’s behaviour by intuition.
35. What does the author think of ChatGPT
A. Its development should be sped up.
B. Its intelligence is winning more favour.
C. Its application should be strictly managed.
D. Its artificial kindness is no match for humans’.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Nearly every student gets nervous before a test at some point, especially if the exam is an important one. This is normal. In fact, a mild case of nerves can even be somewhat beneficial: It can keep you focused and energized. For some students, however, test anxiety can be overwhelming. 36 Fortunately, there are a few things you can do before and during a test to help cope with more severe stress and anxiety.
Take a Meditation or Sitting Stretch Break
Take a minute or two before or even during a test to focus on your breathing, relax tense muscles, do a quick positive visualization, or stretch your limbs. 37
Replace Negative Thoughts with Positive Ones
Learn to recognize when your brain is caught in a cycle of negative thinking and practice turning negative thoughts into positive ones. For example, you may catch yourself saying “I'm going to fail.” 38 With practice, this can be a powerful technique to break the cycle of negative thinking undermining your confidence.
Mistakes are Learning Opportunities
39 Instead, remind yourself that it’s OK to make mistakes. A wrong answer on a test is an opportunity to understand where you need to fill in a gap in your knowledge or spend some extra time studying.
40
