Like a lot of Canadians, Andrew Suboch grew up knowing little about Canada’s national game — lacrosse(曲棍球), other than watching some neighbours pass a ball using old wooden sticks.
It was only when his two children started playing the game as part of their training for hockey (冰球) that he took much notice. His son, Jack, went on to excel at lacrosse and he now plays for the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League.
Both children came up through the Mimico Minor Lacrosse organization, in the Toronto area, which has been around since 1890. When the number of players in the kids’ league began falling in 2014, Mr. Suboch, who is a personal injury lawyer in Toronto, volunteered to step in. He offered to sponsor the “Baby Peanut” program, which introduced children ages 3 and 4 to the game.
Thanks to his sponsorship, more than 100 children play for free each spring for eight weeks. They spend an hour every Saturday learning the game and every player is given a lightweight stick and a shirt. “They are taught to catch, throw, pass and shoot in a non-contact environment,” he said. “You get them running around. Get them away from the screen. It is our national game, so you get them exposed. And sure enough, they caught on.”
To fund the program, Mr. Suboch came up with a novel idea. He started searching his neighbourhood for used appliances, metal and electronic items, such as computers and cellphones. He sorted the material and sold it to a local recycling centre. “Word has gotten out, so people now will give me their used electronics and metal stuff,” he said. The recycling effort raises around $20,000 annually, which covers the cost of the lacrosse program.
Mr. Suboch said watching the kids play has given him a lot of satisfaction and joy. Not only is far less junk going to landfill sites, he said, but “we’ve also got kids who are not in front of a screen.”
4. Why did Andrew start sponsoring the “Baby Peanut” program?
A. His son asked him to support the game.
B. The kids’ league faced declining participation.
C. He wanted to promote his own law firm.
D. He hoped to popularize a hockey organization.
5. What does the underlined phrase “caught on” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Learned the rules. B. Got injured.
C. Attracted donations. D. Became interested.
6. How did Andrew obtain funds for the lacrosse program?
A. By organizing charity matches. B. By collecting and selling used items.
C. By charging participation fees. D. By raising money from the community.
7. What can we learn about the program’s impact?
A. It reduced screen time for children. B. It increased waste sent to landfills.
C. It made lacrosse popular worldwide. D. It created jobs for the local residents.

In a strawberry field surrounded by strawberry fields on the outskirts of Santa Maria, a pair of robots have been picking berries all summer.
Each robot, made by a Colorado company called Tortuga AgTech, rolls in the field on wheels, then stops in front of a plant. A mechanical arm operates its sensor (传感器) among the leaves; machine sight software scans the sensor data in search of grown-up berries. If an unready berry is in the way, the robot relocates for a better position. A snipper-grabber (夹爪) mounted in the middle of the sensors extends to cut the berry's stem (茎), then carefully places it in a waiting plastic container at the robot's base.
Tortuga's robots are designed to pick strawberries from plants grown on hydroponic (水培的) tabletops, not the ground strawberries. The tabletop system enables Tortuga's strawberry robots to work by making berries easier to be picked up with robotic arms and protecting the robots from direct exposure to disadvantageous elements.
Since hitting this field last spring, the robots are on their way to picking nearly as many berries as human pickers, and with 95% correctness, according to Tortuga. Unlike a human, the Tortuga robots don't need breaks, can't get sick, are always ready to work and can pick all day and into the night. With human-work making up so much of a grower's cost, the allure of a robot's increased dependability and potential to become more cost-efficient over time is hard to refuse.
"I do think the best humans are going to be able to outperform robots at these judgment-driver tasks," said Eric Adamson, Tortuga's cofounder and general manager. "But that's OK. It doesn't have to be better than every human, it just has to be better than enough humans."
Meanwhile, the team behind Tortuga sees agricultural robots as more than workforce-saving devices. They see them as the only way that an industry facing climate change, land use and chemical regulation can adapt and survive.
8. How can the robot find grown-up strawberries?
A. By monitoring their stems. B. By observing their positions.
C. By analyzing the sensor data. D. By testing them in containers.
9. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Add some related information. B. Provide some advice for growers.
C. Summarize the previous paragraphs. D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
10. What does the underlined word "allure" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Pressure. B. Extension C. Impact. D. Attraction.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Robots replacing human workforce. B. Great challenges of future robots.
C. Robots shaping the future of strawberry. D. Immediate need for agricultural robots.
D
Almost all of us have a friend, who can eat anything and eat as much as an elephant yet never gain weight. So why can your friend get away with eating what he/she wants and not get fat?
First and foremost, it has something to do with Genetics (基因学): high basal metabolic rate(BMR) (高基础代谢率). When we are resting, our body spends some energy for basic activities like breathing and pumping of the heart. So those with high BMR burn more calories at rest as compared to those who have low BMR. As a result, these individuals don’t put on weight despite eating large amounts of foods.
To show that it is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seems to be influenced by genetic factors. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target (针对) the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
Other reasons such as bad eating and living habits as well as illnesses also contribute to weight gain. The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people who are overweight continues to grow.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects. However, it takes a long time to develop and test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy , balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.
12. Why does the author ask a question in Paragraph 1?
A. To stress his doubts. B. To compare different results.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To express his unhappiness.
13. What might be the key reason for getting fat?
A. Bad living habits. B. Genetic factors.
C. Bad eating habits. D. Serious illnesses.
14. What did the scientists do with the mice during their experiment?
A. They gave them the same experimental conditions.
B. They fed them on a special diet with only fat.
C. They studied the genetic structure of their bodies.
D. They divided them into two groups at the beginning.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Current Weight-loss Medicines Have Bad Effects B. Controlling Weight Gain Is Hard but Possible
C Knowing Your BMR Helps Lose More Weight D. Genes Play a Role in Deciding Your Weight

Change can be troubling. Good or bad, exciting or unexpected, there’s an unquestionable worry that goes with seeing our life change. Thankfully, nature recalls us that entering a new season in our life is nothing to fear but something to enjoy.
What’s now known as “leaf-peeping” has become a form of tourism in the United States that brings in much money. A research shows that across 24 states in the eastern half of the country, fall-leaf tourism adds more than $30 billion to local economies. And even though climate change has made it more difficult to foretell when exactly fall leaves will top out, it hasn’t stopped people from trying to work it out. Tourism leaders from the Smoky Mountains recently give out their yearly fall-leaf foretelling map which helps travelers plan out when they have the best chance to catch those beautiful autumn views.
Perhaps part of what makes the fall leaves so special is the belief that it’s short-term. Finally, all leaves will fall off the trees, and we’ll stop taking photos. And as the seasons change and we feel that same longing for what was, trees will once again welcome their development.
Even when the flashy fall colors no longer stay on the trees and their inner systems slow down, trees are still supporting the ecosystem. The fallen leaves are broken down by bacteria and provide the earth with food the trees need to grow. Insects hide themselves in their bark, finally becoming food for other wildlife looking for a place to make home. Their strong roots help to stop the winter snowwater from washing the earth away.
Right now, trees around the country are already beginning to welcome their next period. During this time of the year, it feels like forests are just offering endless pleasure for free. And fall leaves are an everlasting remembrance that the growth with changes is beautiful.
16. What does “leaf-peeping” refer to?
A. A way taken by tourism leaders to protect trees.
B. A method of foreseeing when fall leaves will top out.
C. A form of tourism where people go to see fall leaves.
D. A research about the results of climate change on trees.
17. Why do people find fall leaves so special?
A. They help service ecosystems. B. They last only for a short time.
C. They bring change to daily life. D. They support the local economy.
18. What can we learn about trees in fall from paragraph 4?
A. They are easily harmed by bacteria.
B. They play a role in cut back snowfall.
C. They stop rooting because of cold weather.
D. They continue providing protection for wildlife.
19. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Lesson from Trees: Welcoming Changes B. Climate Changes in the Season of Fall
C. Trees Supporting the Ecosystem D. Fall Leaves Tourism in the US
