Katalin Karikó along with her colleague Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023 for the development of messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.
Karikó was born in January 1955, in a small village in Hungary. She had an ambition from early on to become a scientist. As a young adult, she became interested in mRNA, which carries DNA instructions to the protein-making engine of cells. She hoped that mRNA could play a key role in the treatment of various diseases. It became her mission to make her dream a reality to help cure patients. However, Karikó faced a shortage of money for her research in her country, and she then faced the choice of stop ping and doing something not connected to her mission or continuing her research at the price of having to leave her country.
After searching for posts and scholarships worldwide, Karikó accepted an offer from Temple University in Philadelphia for a postdoctoral fellowship. Karikó and her husband gave up everything they had in their homeland and bought a one-way ticket to the U. S., where they knew no one. She was aware of the risks but didn’t feel discouraged. As she put it in an award acceptance speech, “Follow your dreams and don’t hesitate to learn anything from anyone.”
She was initially on track to become a full professor but received repeated fund rejections. Undeterred by the problems and challenges, she chose to continue her research. By focusing on what mattered to her every day, she “accidentally” met her work partner Drew Weissman who was also interested in mRNA.They teamed up to work on mRNA and published papers about their groundbreaking discovery for years. Then the pandemic hit the world. The changed mRNA technology Karikó and Weissman invented was then used in vaccines that prevented the infection effectively.
Karikó’s life is a testament to finding one’s passion and then pursuing it every single day. Many of us know what we are fond of, but we are not good self-motivators on a daily basis.
24.What can we learn about Karikó from paragraph 2
A.She had a clear sense of purpose.
B.She was poor when she was young.
C.She was hesitant to leave her country.
D.She longed to be a doctor to cure patients.
25.What does the underlined part “Undeterred by” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Being afraid of. B.Not motivated by.
C.Being unaware of. D.Not discouraged by.
26.What is probably the main contribution of Karikó
A.Simplifying the mRNA technology.
B.Making the structure of mRNA clear.
C.Laying the foundation for mRNA vaccines.
D.Developing a vaccine for a serious disease.
27.What can we learn from Karikó’s success
A.Every minute counts.
B.Two heads are better than one.
C.Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
D.Necessity is the mother of invention.

Painkillers of all different sorts have always been a part of human history. The appearance of wonderful pain medicines, such as paracetamol (对乙酰氨基酚), has truly marked a big step forward in managing the aches. However, more than three quarters of common medicines come from fossil fuels (化石燃料), making the industry quite environmentally unfriendly.
Recently, researchers from the University of Edinburgh have published a study in Nature Chemistry, introducing a method for turning plastic into paracetamol. According to the researchers, the primary thing to make paracetamol is polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET, which is used to make water bottles and creates more than 350 million tons of waste a year.
In order to turn PET into something useful, the researchers used the same principles as those used in making beer. This process uses phosphate (磷酸盐) found in bacterial cells to turn terephthalic acid (对苯二甲酸) — which comes from the breakdown of PET — into paramaminobenzoic acid, which is then turned into paracetamol.
Though this seems not simple, the process of turning plastic into paracetamol takes less than 24 hours. This new method can be carried out at room temperature, through a process that produces no CO2. In addition, about 90 percent of the PET used is turned into medicine, leaving very little plastic waste.
“This work shows that PET plastic isn’t just waste. It can be changed into precious new products, including those with possibility of treating disease,” said Professor Stephen Wallace from the University of Edinburgh. “Though there is still much to be done in order to solve the problem of plastic waste, this is a step in the right direction, and shows the fact that plastics have the potential to be reused in many creative ways.”
It’s clear that solving the climate problem will take a lot of creativity. And though it seems like just a drop in the bucket, the University of Edinburgh’s discovery could be the first in a series of discoveries that focus on learning how to turn plastic into products that can help human beings instead of harming the earth.
28.Why did the University of Edinburgh conduct the research
A.To explore more ways to use fossil fuels. B.To produce more effective painkillers.
C.To turn plastic waste into useful medicine. D.To reduce the cost of making paracetamol.
29.What feature does the new paracetamol-making method have
A.It is efficient and does little harm to the environment.

30.Which of the following statements will Professor Stephen Wallace agree with
A.PET plastic can do more good than harm.
B.Plastics may have many potential applications.
C.Products made from PET have been well received.
D.The problem of plastic waste needs worldwide attention.
31.What may be the text
A.An advertisement for painkillers.
B.An online news report about plastic waste.
C.A scientific paper about medical science.
D.A book review about environmental science.

If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again.
It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science & Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society.
In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.
The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.
“Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi.
The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.
The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks & clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.
32.What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the new report
A.To recommend a strange shopping habit.
B.To introduce a respected scientific journal.
C.To analyze online shopping.
D.To prove the advantage of offline shopping.
33.What does the underlined word “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Combine. B.Produce. C.Divide. D.Check.
34.What can we learn about “the last mile” delivery
A.It is designed by the research team.
B.It is managed by the factories.
C.It causes high greenhouse gas emissions.
D.It influences the total greenhouse gas footprints.
35.According to the analysis, which is probably the most eco-friendly way to shop
A.Buying at physical stores. B.Buying from bricks & clicks.
C.Buying from pure players. D.Buying a few items per time.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The Internet is filled with fake (虚假的) reviews, and the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has made the problem even more serious. According to watchdog organizations and researchers, these tools allow fraudsters to produce false reviews quickly and in large volumes. Although writing or selling fake reviews is illegal in the U.S., the practice remains common, especially during holiday seasons when shoppers rely heavily on reviews.
Fake reviews appear across many industries, including e-commerce, restaurants, medical care, and home services. Since mid-2023, AI-produced reviews have become widespread across various platforms. One tech company reported that nearly 14% of reviews in certain service sectors are likely fake, with millions being partly or fully AI-produced. Some apps even use AI reviews to trick users into downloading harmful software. The Federal Trade Commission has even taken legal action against companies offering AI tools that help create fake content. Major platforms like Amazon and Yelp are also affected. AI-created reviews often rise to the top because they are detailed and seem trustworthy. Some users post AI-written reviews to earn special status, like Yelp’s “Elite” badge, which makes their accounts appear more reliable.
Companies are taking action. Amazon and Trustpilot allow AI-assisted reviews only if they reflect real experiences. Yelp requires users to write their own reviews. Many platforms use algorithms (算法) and investigative teams to spot and remove fake content. Industry groups are also working together to improve screening systems and share best practices.
It’s important to note that not all AI-produced reviews are fake. Some people use AI to help say what they really think, especially non-native English speakers. Experts suggest that platforms should focus on stopping bad actors rather than preventing proper uses of AI.
To spot fake AI reviews, consumers should watch for overly emotional language, repetitive terms, and nonspecific phrases. AI-written texts are often longer, highly structured, and contain overused expressions like “game-changer”. Although it’s becoming harder to tell them apart from human-written reviews, being aware of these signs can help consumers make more informed decisions.
36.What does the underlined word “fraudsters” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Real review writers. B.Fake review creators.
C.Platform operators. D.Review researchers.
37.How do many platforms manage user reviews according to the text
A.By removing bad reviews. B.By keeping all of them.
C.By checking them carefully. D.By encouraging more AI reviews.
38.Why do non-native English speakers use AI to produce reviews
A.To improve their writing skills. B.To express their opinions better.
C.To make their accounts reliable. D.To avoid writing detailed reviews.
39.What can be inferred from the text
A.All AI reviews cheat consumers.
B.Offering users fake AI tools is lawful.
C.Fake reviews are legal during U.S. holidays.
D.Stopping fake reviews entirely is difficult.

When the last customer left KFC, it was already 10:30 p.m. Daniel, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.
Entering his room, Daniel found his younger brother Eric sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.
“Sorry, Daniel. I ... I did something wrong.” Eric sprang up and said nervously.
“What is it ”
“This afternoon I sneaked out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr. Green’s car. I was so scared and I ... I hurried home in panic.”
“Is the car seriously damaged ”
“The left headlight got broken.”
“It’s truly your fault and it’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age. Besides, it’s illegal.” Daniel raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Eric lowered his head and bit his lips hard.
“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.”
The next morning when Daniel got up, Eric was still sleeping soundly. Daniel was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.
After breakfast, Daniel took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches (划痕) were clearly visible. Daniel shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Mr. Green’s house. When he arrived, he was welcomed by Mrs. Green, who told him that Mr. Green had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.
“I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back ” Daniel requested eagerly.
“Of course. He should be home soon.” Mrs. Green invited Daniel in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him.
After half an hour, the door opened and in came Mr. Green. Having said hello to each other, Mr. Green and Daniel both sat down on the sofa.

Two-Day Weekend: Blessing or Challenge
Recently, the two-day weekend policy for students has brought about the discussion — “Is it a blessing or a challenge ” Different people have different opinions about it.
On the one hand, some people think it’s a blessing. For example, students can reduce study stress by doing sports, and use the time to develop hobbies like reading.
On the other hand, others think it’s a challenge. For example, some worry they’ll fall behind in studies without weekend tutoring, and some even waste time on phone games.
Personally, we should make a good plan: spend a little time reviewing lessons and more on relaxing activities to balance study and rest.
第二节:
Daniel cleared his throat and began to speak. “Mr. Green, I’m here to apologize for my brother Eric. He took my motorcycle without permission this afternoon and hit your car by accident, breaking the left headlight. I’m so sorry for the trouble he caused. It’s my fault too. I should have kept the keys safer.” He took out an envelope from his pocket and handed it over. “This is all the money I earned from my part-time job at KFC. I hope it can cover the repair cost.” His face turned red, but his eyes were firm with determination.
Just then, there came a knock at the door. Mrs. Green opened it, and Eric stood there, head bowed. “I... I’m sorry, Mr. Green. It was my mistake. I was frightened to tell you the truth, but Daniel taught me that it is more important than hiding to be brave and responsible.” He looked up, voice trembling but sincere. Mr. Green smiled gently, patting both boys’ shoulders. “I appreciate your honesty, boys. The headlight isn’t too expensive, and your courage to admit it means more than money. Let’s fix it together tomorrow.” Daniel and Eric exchanged a relieved glance, grateful for the lesson in responsibility and forgiveness.
