About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, a business owner and passionate cyclist, was riding his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about a friend’s 12-year-old son. The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from a brain condition that often caused balance disturbances.
When he got home, McLindon, now 60, went online and found a three-wheel recumbent (侧卧的) bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon the boy was cycling around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as McLindon learned from his friend’s reaction. “To see his son interacting with other kids,” McLindon says. “I’ll never forget the smile on his face.”
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation. Funded by donations, the group works with pediatric rehab (小儿康复) clinics to find children who can benefit from owning bike and to help craft each bike to the particular needs of the child. A bike may include a headrest, a shoulder band, a seat belt, and a caregiver’s steering and braking system in the back. The bikes are expensive — $3, 000 to $4, 000, and that’s with the foundation’s large discount. For kids lucky enough to get one, they’re a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old who had a back problem,” says McLindon. She spent most days on the couch watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons (铁人三项). In a magazine interview, she said, “I always knew there was an athlete me.”
So far, the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that’s just a start. “I do a lot of things. I run a lot of companies.” McLindon says. “But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”
14. What inspired Andrew McLindon to search for a special bike online
A. His enthusiasm for cycling.
B. His ambition to start a new business.
C. His goal to invent a new type of bike.
D. His desire to help a boy with balance issues.
15. Why was McLindon Family Foundation established
A. To sponsor special-needs triathlons.
B. To raise money for pediatric rehab clinics.
C. To provide adaptive bikes for disabled children.
D. To offer a social network to children with special needs.
16. What benefit can adaptive bikes bring
A. They can offer medical treatment.
B. They can provide exercise and fun.
C. They can relieve physical suffering.
D. They can improve academic performance.
17. What does McLindon think of his work with the McLindon Family Foundation
A. It is a worthwhile effort. B. It is a temporary solution.
C. It is financially rewarding. D. It is technically challenging.
C
You’ll probably never go to Mars or sing on the stage with the Rolling Stones. But if virtual reality (VR) ever lives up to its promise, you might be able to do all these things — and many more — without even leaving your home. Unlike real reality, virtual reality means simulating (模仿) bits of our world. Apart from games and entertainment, it’s long been used for training airline pilots and surgeons and for helping scientists to figure out complex problems such as the structure of protein molecules (分子). Then how does it work
Close your eyes and think of virtual reality and you probably picture something like this: a man wearing a wrap-around headset and data gloves wired into a powerful workstation or supercomputer. What distinguishes VR from an ordinary computer experience is the nature of the input and output. Where an ordinary computer uses things like a keyboard, mouse, or speech recognition for input, VR uses sensors that detect how your body is moving. And where a PC displays output on a screen, VR uses two screens (one for each eye), surround-sound speakers, and maybe some forms of touch and body feedback as well.
VR has been routinely used by scientists, doctors, dentists, engineers, architects, archaeologists, and the military for about the last 30 years. Difficult and dangerous jobs are hard to train for. How can you safely practice taking a trip to space, making a parachute jump, or carrying out brain surgery All these things are obvious candidates for virtual reality applications.
Like any technology, virtual reality has both good and bad points. Critics always raise the risk that people may be addicted to alternative realities to the point of ignoring their real-world lives — but that criticism has been leveled at everything from radio and TV to computer games and the Internet. Like many technologies, VR takes little or nothing away from the real world: you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.
18. What equipment do we probably need for virtual reality
A. A keyboard, a headset and a supercomputer.
B. A headset, data gloves and a speech recognition.
C. A headset, data gloves and a supercomputer.
D. A keyboard, a mouse and a speech recognition.
19. Paragraph 3 is mainly about .
A. the principles of virtual reality B. the applications of virtual reality
C. the history of virtual reality D. the influences of virtual reality
20. According to the passage, virtual reality means .
A. imagining beautiful things in our mind
B. creating something that doesn’t exist
C. cloning something that has died out
D.experiencing things that don’t really exist
21. What is the writer’s attitude towards VR
A. Appreciative. B. Cautious. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.

Self-driving cars may sound like something from a futuristic sci-fi novel. However, with advanced trials expected from 2021, they are a lot closer to reality than you may think, and they could really help you.
Connected and automated vehicles (also known as CAVs), are vehicles that could perform many of the functions of today’s human drivers in the future. Aware of the potential benefits of the technology from improving road safety and reducing traffic congestion (拥塞), to enabling greater travel independence-the U. K. government has been encouraging the technology.
“However, we won’t get there unless those designing the technology engage properly with a wide range of transport users,” said lain Forbes, head of the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles.
FLOURISH, one initiative that received government backing, has helped to advance the successful implementation of CAVs in the U. K. by developing services and capabilities which maxi-mise the benefits of driverless vehicles for users and transport authorities.
The project was a collaboration between small and medium companies and large businesses across multiple industries, universities, local authorities and the not-for-profit sector, to investigate how these vehicles might benefit older adults and those with mobility-related conditions.
Mervyn Kohler, an Age U. K. spokesman, believes FLOURISH’s approach will be key to the positive impact self-driving cars have on older adults. “The project’s connectivity findings will also help the users of the future to make real-time journey decisions, responding to live information,” Tracey Poole, FLOURISH’s project manager and transport planning specialist says: “Not only will these vehicles be more inclusive; they will also be safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.”
Although safety is one of the big prizes associated with the introduction of self-driving cars, with the vast majority of collisions caused by human error, concerns about their safety are common.
The government is keen to understand the public’s view on CAVs and continues to survey public attitudes. It is also taking big steps towards establishing how our laws and regulations might need to change to support the safe use of self-driving cars.
22.What is the advantage of self-driving cars
A.They guarantee road safety.
B.They remove traffic jams.
C.They provide more freedom of traveling.
D.They get over the elder’s dependence on drivers.
23.What does the underlined word “prizes” in paragraph 7 refer to
A.Awards. B.Achievements. C.Realization. D.Characteristics.
24.What can we infer about self-driving cars
A.Collisions between self-driving cars can’t be avoided.
B.Self-driving cars are more eco-friendly than today's cars.
C.There is still a way to go before self-driving cars hit the road.
D.People are not worried about the safety problems of self-driving cars.
25.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.CAVs: a substitute for today’s human driver
B.How do CAVs help people less able to travel
C.FLOURISH: a new project on self-driving cars.
D.Could self-driving cars soon be a reality

The most important element of emotional maturity(情绪成熟) is taking responsibility for your own emotions and actions. It means neither blaming yourself for what you cannot control nor losing emotional balance. 26 Here are some practical ways to develop emotional maturity in daily life.
Admit mistakes when you are wrong.
Emotionally mature people do not blame others for their own mistakes. They are responsible for their actions, learn from mistakes, and accept feedback objectively. 27 Often, they will just admit it, apologize, and struggle to improve themselves.
___ 28 __
Emotionally mature people understand their emotional needs. It is important to take care of others’ feelings but it does not mean they should totally abandon their own feelings. The key is to stay balanced and to attend to their own emotional needs when it is necessary. If a person does not respect his own feelings, it is easy for him to be influenced by others and become miserable.
Don't play victim.
29 Whenever they get setbacks in life, they view it as their own responsibility to improve themselves. They trust that every challenge exists to strengthen them, whatever happens in life.
Define and set boundaries.
Emotionally mature people understand their standpoint. They know what they want in life and they also make a conscious decision on the things that they do not want. When things beyond their boundaries happen, they can detect them right away, deal with it accordingly and won't let it destroy their self-esteem. 30 .

Possible Version 1:
Should Students Be Allowed to Bring Mobile Phones to School
Last week, our class held a heated discussion on whether students should be allowed to bring mobile phones to school. With the development of technology, mobile phones have become a common tool in daily life, but they also bring both benefits and problems to campus.
Some students are in favor of carrying mobile phones. First of all, phones allow them to contact their parents easily in case of emergency, which makes both parents and students feel safer. Besides, smartphones can be used as learning tools. For example, students can look up information online, read e-books, or use educational apps to help with their studies. What’s more, they can take photos of the notes on the blackboard or record the teacher's instructions.
However, others hold the opposite opinion. They argue that mobile phones can easily distract students from their lessons. Some students may play games or chat with friends during class, which affects not only their own learning but also that of others. In addition, using phones for long periods may harm their eyesight and health. Worse still, some might be tempted to use phones to cheat during exams.
As far as I am concerned, I believe that students can be allowed to bring mobile phones to school, but rules should be set to guide their use. For example, phones should be turned off during class and only used during breaks or for learning purposes under the teacher's guidance. It is not the phone itself that is good or bad, but how we use it. Therefore, students should learn to use mobile phones wisely and improve their self-discipline.
