25. 根据第一段The poor man is battling stage-5 kidney disease, and has to have a transplant(移植).可知,Felicia的父亲需要肾脏移植才能活下去,再结合第三段Felicia secretly went through the testing process to see if she could be a match for his organ donation.

根据第四段可知,But that is changing.
32~35.【答案】A、D、C、B

32. 代词指代题。根据上文可知,许多研究表明,学习一门乐器可以影响孩子的语言能力,再根据画线词所在句的语境可知,it应是指代上文提到的“学习一门乐器”。
33. 细节理解题。根据第四段中的The third group acted ... their usual classes.可知,第三组作为对照组,除了平常的课程外,没有额外的课程。
34. 细节理解题。根据第五段中的Compared to the control group ... between words based on vowel differences.可知,与对照组相比,音乐学习者和上额外阅读课的学生都能更好地根据元音区分单词。
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的It looks like for ... it s better than extra reading.可知,在识别声音之间的差异方面,包括语音,学习音乐比学习阅读要好。根据It s not worse than ... get rid of the art education and just have more reading.可知,学习乐器不比增加阅读课的效果差,而许多学校取消艺术教育,增加阅读。由此推知,减少音乐课是不明智的。

As we pushed on, the hike became even tougher. The steep portions seemed endless, and each step required every ounce of our strength and concentration. Sweat trickled down our faces, and our legs felt like jelly. We paused frequently to catch our breath and steady ourselves on the uneven ground. In front of us, the jagged rocks and steep inclines tested our limits. Determined to reach the stone text, Eric and I encouraged each other, inching forward slowly but surely.
When Walter saw us, he rushed to help us. Seeing our struggle, he offered his hand to Eric and supported him over a particularly tricky section. “Take it slow, we ve got this,” Walter smiled reassuringly. With his assistance, we navigated the final stretch of the challenging path. Finally, we stood before the magnificent stone text, filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The view was breathtaking, and the hike, though arduous, was undoubtedly worth every step.

Felicia's father Herminio, in Florida, has to rely on dialysis(透析) to keep him alive as he waits for a kidney donation(捐赠). The poor man is battling stage-5 kidney disease, and has to have a transplant(移植).
Felicia noted that she and her father had always been close, even after she moved to Kansas when she was 13 years old. She added that the distance between them had become especially difficult because of his illness.
The waiting list could take months. Instead of letting her father wait for a long time, Felicia secretly went through the testing process to see if she could be a match for his organ donation. "It's so amazing to me that I can help save a life—and it's my dad's," Felicia said. The father-daughter duo(二人组) are currently going through the final stages of tests to make sure that she can proceed(继续进行) with the organ donation.
While Felicia's donation will most likely save her father's life, the family have to face another problem. Last week, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres created an attractive new term. The era of global warming has ended, he declared dramatically, and the era of “global boiling” has arrived.
You can see why he said it. July was the hottest month on record globally. High temperatures and intense wildfires have raged across the Northern Hemisphere. Marine heatwaves are damaging the world s third-largest coral reef, off Florida. And as greenhouse emissions keep rising, it means many even hotter summers await us.
But critics have made negative comments on the phrase. Obviously, “global boiling” is clearly an exaggeration(夸张), but “global warming” is now far too weak. Many climate scientists have pushed for the term “global heating” to be used in preference. Similarly, phrases such as “climate crisis” haven t gained enough attention. That s because many of us still feel we haven t seen this crisis with our own eyes.
But that is changing. In the past few years, extreme weather and related events have struck many countries. Australia s Black Summer brought bushfires that burned an area the size of the United Kingdom. Germany suffered serious flooding in 2021. The 2022 flood in Pakistan flooded large parts of the country. China has seen both drought and floods. Savage multi-year droughts have hit the Horn of Africa. India has banned rice exports due to damage from heavy rain.
Opponents of climate action often complain about what they see as the overuse of “crisis talk”. If everything is a crisis, nothing is a crisis.
When Guterres uses highly charged phrases, he s not inviting us to imagine a Hollywood-style disaster. What he s hoping is to make people listen—and act—now we can see what climate change looks like.
Are there better phrases to capture this Possibly. Take the challenge yourself: Can you think up a brief, accurate phrase to cover intensifying local and regional-scale droughts, fires, typhoons and floods You can see how hard it is.
28.What made António Guterres use the phrase “global boiling”
A. The new scientific finding. B. The comments from critics.
C. The present serious situation. D. The future trend in climate change.
29.Why do the phrases like “climate crisis” fail to attract our attention
A. These phrases don t reflect the truth. B. Many disasters haven t been reported.
C. Fewer crises have happened these years. D. Climate disasters haven t happened to us.
30.What does the author try to convey by saying “But that is changing.” in Paragraph 4
A. But the situation is improving. B. But people have realized the danger.
C. But more climate crises have happened. D. But people have taken effective measures.
31.What does the author think of António Guterres s saying “global boiling”
A. It s beyond the truth. B. It s acceptable indeed.
C. He tries to frighten people. D. He aims to please the public.
D
Giving children music lessons won t just introduce them to music—it could also greatly improve their language skills.
While many studies have shown that learning an instrument can affect things like the language ability, it isn t understood if this is a side effect of a general improvement of cognitive(认知的)skills, or something that directly affects language processing.
Now, we are getting closer to an answer, thanks to a study of 74 Chinese kindergarten children, led by Robert Desimone from MIT. For the study, Desimone s team chose children from the Chinese education system, with the support of education officials who wanted to see how it might improve their learning.
The 4-to 5-year-old Mandarin-speaking children in the study were divided into three groups. One group received a 45-minute piano lesson three times a week, while another received extra reading instruction classes. The third group acted as controls, taking no extra lessons beyond their usual classes.
The classes lasted for six months, after which the children were tested on their ability to tell words based on differences in tones, consonants(辅音), or vowels(元音). The test results showed that the children who had taken piano lessons performed better at telling the difference between words that differ by a single consonant, when compared with the children who took extra reading pared to the control group, both the music learners and the extra reading group did better in telling the difference between words based on vowel differences.
“It looks like for recognising differences between sounds, including speech sounds; it s better than extra reading. That means schools could pay more attention to music,” Desimone says. “It s not worse than giving extra reading to the children, which is probably what many schools are trying to do—get rid of the art education and just have more reading.”
32.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Learning a musical instrument. B. A study of children s schooling.
C. The Chinese education system. D. Improvement of cognitive skills.
33.What did the third group learn in the study
A. Ways to improve their study. B. Three extra piano lessons a week.
C. Extra lessons about reading tips. D. Nothing except their usual studies.
34.What conclusion did researchers draw at last
A. Learning music improved learners memory.
B. Children taking piano lessons didn t perform well.
C. The extra reading group were good at telling vowels.
D. The piano turned out to be better than other instruments.

The sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have for getting rid of any source of stress in your life. 36 We can't over-estimate the importance of the sense of humor too much. In fact, making work fun helps employees perform best and provide quality work.
37 Telling jokes and stories and using team-building games in companies make people have more fun at work. Some companies even have talent shows or hold dance or sports competitions. It just gives employees a break in the day and a chance to laugh at themselves.
38 Humor should be about laughing with rather than laughing at others. We all have probably heard jokes that seemed to bother or hurt others. For example, jokes making fun of employees for their weight, race, religion, etc. are not only harmful to the person, but also can create an unfriendly working environment.
Even if the jokes were intended to be humorous, they may not be received that way. I have even heard speakers make slight dirty jokes on the audience, thinking they would be seen as cool. In fact the audience thought the speakers had no taste. 39 In another case, I heard about a manager who was out partying with co-workers and kidding about how the boss liked certain people more than others. Such jokes actually had damaging effects on people in the company.
Humor, if proper, can brighten up the workplace and reduce some of the stress we are all experiencing. 40
A. And they lost people's respect as a result.
B. Of course, it is important to use proper humor at work.
C. Everyone agreed that their work needed to be more fun.
D. There are plenty of ways to bring humor into the workplace.
E. So take a moment to laugh and help us all to feel happier at work.
F. In addition, laughter can brighten up the feelings of everyone around.
G. The most obvious way to make your job fun is to learn to find some humor.

Eric, my husband, and I are enthusiastic hikers. We are attracted by the challenge and beauty of mountain trails(小路), especially those that lead to sites of historical and cultural significance. Our love for hiking began shortly after we were married, and it has been a passion of ours for many years.
Last month, we visited a national park with the intention of hiking to a location known for its stone text. After many difficulties, we found only one site within the park was open to visitors. To enjoy the stone text in the mountains, we needed to finish a 2.5-mile path, which started from the museum of the park. 2.5 miles didn t sound like a very long hike. We were both just in our seventies but fairly fit, and we thought we could easily do 2.5 miles. However, the worker in the museum warned us that the first mile of the path was steep(陡峭的)and rocky and that it could be very challenging. But we ignored her warning and made up our minds to go.
“2.5 miles is not a big deal. Surely, we could do it if we wear proper boots and start early tomorrow morning,” I whispered to my husband lightheartedly.
The next morning, my husband and I got up early. Before starting our hike, we first reached a place that served breakfast. There, we found a family of three, a young man named Walter, his wife and sister. They would also take the path to watch the stone text. They were warm and friendly and we chatted happily for a while. Before they set off, Walter said that he would see us at the stairs, and we thought no more about it. Twenty minutes later, we also started hiking.
The trail started well and it was pretty much downhill all the way. Then it became more and more challenging. The path became extremely steep and was blocked here and there by huge slippery(湿滑的)rocks, which made each step forward an adventure.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
