Small talk like “The weather today is beautiful, isn’t it ” or “Pretty nice place, huh ” is a waste of time, according to some people. But scientists believe that it is actually more useful than it may appear to be.
One example is on the train or plane. A study by the University of Chicago found that people who talk to strangers enjoy a better ride than those who sit in silence or keep playing with their phones. In the study, researchers asked people at Chicago train stations to start conversations with other travelers. Most of them refused to do so at first because they think they will not get a friendly answer. But the result is the opposite - most strangers didn’t refuse to be talked to; instead, they were glad to be talked to. Nicholas Epley, one of the researchers said, “That’s because human beings are social animals, they are afraid of being left alone.”
What’s more, small talk with strangers can help you feel connected with your surroundings (环境). Some studies found when people are often smiled at and spoken to, there are more chances for them to have a stronger sense of belonging.
Of course, a deep conversation gives you even more happiness than small talk. But deep conversations start with small talk. So the first step is to start talking, no matter how small the topic is. And who knows, maybe an opening line as simple as “I like your hat” could lead to a serious conversation and you can learn a lot from a stranger.
23. According to the study by the University of Chicago, what kind of passengers can enjoy a better ride
A. Passengers who keep silent all the way.
B. Passengers who keep playing phone games.
C. Passengers who talk with people next to them.
24. Why did most people refuse to start conversations with other travelers at first in the study
A. They are afraid of being refused.
B. They are afraid of being left alone.
C. They are afraid of strangers.
25. Which of the following is an advantage of small talk
A. Wasting less time.
B. Being unhappy.
C. Feeling like you are a part of your surroundings.
26. What can we infer about the author’s attitude (态度) toward small talk
A. The author believes small talk is useless without deep conversations.
B. The author agrees people should start small talk actively.
C. The author thinks deep conversations may start before small talk.

In February 2024, Changsha primary and secondary schools began increasing the time of class breaks from 10 to 15 minutes. This new policy (政策) aims to (旨在) improve students physical and mental health through outdoor activities. Cities including Beijing, Tianjin, and Qingdao have taken similar steps.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, many schools in Beijing are working hard. Dianchanglu Primary School sets a climbing wall for its students to build physical strength and teamwork skills. Qianjiadian Central Primary School builds a “Happy Farm” where students grow seasonal vegetables like tomatoes and pumpkins, learning basic agricultural (农业) knowledge. Huashi Middle School holds an art show in the hallway, showing paintings created by students. Students can enjoy great paintings during the break, discussing the artworks with their art teachers.
“We have welcomed new friends to our school - some ducks and rabbits!” said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old boy from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “We take turns feeding them and cleaning their living areas.” During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. “I used to feel sleepy in afternoon classes, but now I’m more energetic,” added Zhang. “We get closer to nature, which is refreshing and relaxing.”
As the break time is longer, it is also important to make sure everyone is safe. Physical education (PE) teachers from Chaoyang Education Research Center keep an eye on students playing on the ground.
“Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises like stretching or yoga poses to avoid running and slipping,” said one PE teacher.
27. How long are the class breaks in Changsha now
A. 10 minutes. B. 25 minutes. C. 15 minutes.
28. How does the writer support (支持) his idea in Paragraph 2
A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples. C. By listing numbers.
29. The underlined word “refreshing” may mean something that _____.
A. makes you feel new and active
B. makes you feel tired
C. makes you feel worried
30. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To encourage students to spend more time outdoors.

Do you speak a dialect (方言), which means local language, in daily life While many Chinese people speak putonghua, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save the local dialects, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. “There’s an online library. In it people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips and over 5 million videos.”
Why is it important to protect the dialect culture According to Harold Palmer, a world expert on language, “dialects are a key to store local cultures. Language clearly shows the history and beliefs of an area,” he said.
Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his worries about the disappearing of dialects. “For over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library “A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen,” said Cao Zhiyun, an expert on the project. “Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in. along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.”
The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

Dear Mike,
I am glad to hear that you are going to study in China as an exchange student at the end of this year. You will experience the Spring Festival here! It falls on the first day of the Chinese lunar year. Before that, families clean houses and buy new clothes. On New Year's Eve, we have a big reunion dinner, watch the Spring Festival Gala, and set off fireworks. Kids get lucky money in red packets. We also put up couplets on doors.
To learn Chinese well, I suggest you practice speaking with locals daily. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Also, watching Chinese movies and listening to songs can help you improve your listening and learn natural expressions.
I'm sure you will enjoy your time in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
