Chinese NBA rookie Yang Hansen had an amazing second preseason game, which made fans feel their high hopes for him were right. This also gave more support to the US basketball organization’s plan to help develop basketball talent in China.
Yang, who was picked 16th by the Portland Trail Blazers in this summer’s NBA draft, had a hard first game. His team lost 123-129 to the Golden State Warriors last Wednesday. NBA commissioner Adam Silver is now in China for the league’s preseason games in Macao Special Administrative Region. He said he has been watching Yang and hopes Yang’s growing NBA career will encourage other Chinese players to follow his path.
“I watched Yang Hansen play at the Las Vegas Summer League before. He seems like a very promising player for the NBA,” Silver told China Daily. He said this after signing a new cooperation agreement with Guo Zhenming, president of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), in Macao on Friday.
Developing players is a key part of the CBA-NBA partnership. Silver said they will work not only to find more talented players like Yang, but also to make the Chinese national team stronger and help basketball become more popular across China.
“We’ll talk a lot with the CBA and Mr. Guo about what we need to do to develop top-level players. These players should be able to help the Chinese national team succeed and maybe even play in the NBA or WNBA,” Silver explained.
“Mr. Guo understands that we need better systems to let young Chinese players play against the best teams. The CBA and we both agree that helping these young players develop is our most important task.”
Silver added, “If these players can join the NBA and play against top competition, it will definitely inspire more young players to work hard and reach this goal too.”
