Soccer Fever Boosts City Economy
In downtown Nanjing, the excitement for the "Suchao" soccer league is
everywhere. Huge LED screens show the best moments from games, and shopping
malls run soccer-themed sales to attract fans.
Traveling to watch games is a growing trend in China, helping cities like Nanjing
mix sports with fun and shopping. The local government has started promotions
where visitors can use their game tickets to get discounts at over 400 places.
This idea worked very well. The first six rounds of the league boosted spending
by 38 billion yuan. Last Saturday's game helped shops, restaurants, and hotels in
Nanjing's main business areas earn 870 million yuan, 6.4% more than last year.
"The holiday crowd has doubled, and many customers are visitors here for the
soccer," said Zhou Xiaozhou, who owns a bar in Nanjing. For fans without tickets,
sports bars and malls with big screens became great places to watch the games. "The
local cheering is even crazier than during the World Cup," he added.
Outdoor areas in Jiangsu have been turned into fan zones with large screens and
hundreds of seats. In Wuxi, a lakeside street known for its bars and barbecue
restaurants has set up more than 40 big screens so fans can enjoy local food while
watching the games.
Host cities have also welcomed visitors with special treats. Some offered free
entry to tourist spots for residents from rival cities. Yancheng even announced it
would give free local snacks, like its famous egg pancakes, to fans with tickets.
"The 'ticket economy' connects sports, travel, and business," said Professor Si
Zengchuo from Jiangsu Normal University. "It creates a one-stop experience where
people watch the game, tour the city, and go shopping. This model is now spreading
across the country."
