Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived in a large house in London. Father worked hard in a government office. He was never angry and always ready for a game. Mother was almost at home, ready to play with the children, and help them do their home-lessons.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed: pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely playroom and a dog called James. They had a happy life, but they did not know how happy the pretty life in the large house was over.
Peter had a toy engine and it broke. After dinner, Peter showed Father the engine. Father looked it over and promised to do it on Saturday.
At that moment two men came to see Father. Minutes passed. Father’s voice came out from the study, loud and angry. More time passed. Then Mother came in and said, "Father’s been called away-on business."
A week after their father went away, their mother said, "Now, we're going to move to the country. A pretty little white house, called Three Chimneys."
The family started packing: clothes, plates, candles and also tables and chairs. "We seem to be taking all the ugly things," said Roberta.
"We're taking the useful ones," said Mother. "We've got to play at being poor for a bit."
Peter said joyously, "I do like moving! I wish we moved once a month." Mother laughed and said, "I don't like moving!".
As she turned away, Roberta saw her face. She never forgot it.
"Oh, Mother," she whispered, "how I love you! You are brave enough to laugh when you’re feeling like that!" Then they took a train to Three Chimneys. No one knew how long they had been in the train when Mother woke them up.
They stood in the cold night air on the dark platform. At that moment they didn’t know how important the station and the trains would become to them. They didn’t know they were going to be the railway children.

Several schools are trying to stop students using slang (俚语). But is it worth
The Harris Academy in Upper Norwood (London) is one school that’s taking action. Students there aren’t allowed to use words such as coz (because), ain’t (isn’t/aren’t, etc.) and yeah (yes) when they’re speaking. A letter has been sent to parents explaining the decision, according to an article in the Daily Mail.
But why "The big problem is that many of these words are appearing in written work," explained Mr. Hank, an English teacher."This puts many children at a disadvantage..We do want them to be able to communicate properly with people and be understood. We are going to teach them the rules. If they decide not to use these rules with friends, that is fine. But I want them to know that when writing and speaking in a formal (正式的) situation, they should use Standard English."
So, what's causing the problem Firstly, slang is just about everywhere these days: in TV soaps, reality shows, songs and films. Secondly, with more and more people using it in conversations with friends and workmates, it’s becoming more acceptable. Also, the increase in the use of mobile phones and social networking sites is having an influence---while texting, people often use abbreviations or phonetic forms of words, such as wot (what), dat (that), dis (this), n (and), w (with), gonna (going to) and wanna (want to).
However, many people think that the effort to control languages doesn’t make sense. "The very nature of English is its flexibility (灵活性)", said a Jamaican poet in a recent interview. "You can't control the type of language that people use," he added. "The reason why English is such a popular language is because it develops well to fit the way it is being used," a language expert explained.
Is the "war" on slang worth fighting
47. How does the writer show that slang is not allowed in some schools
A. By telling a story. B. By using a saying. C. By giving an example. D. By describing a picture.
48. How many reasons for people’s using slang are mentioned
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
49. What can we infer from the Jamaican poet’s words in Paragraph 5
A. Any language has its own rules. B. English is the most popular language.
C. It's acceptable for people to use slang. D. The effort to control slang is really meaningful.
50. Which is the best title for this passage
A. Slang matters, doesn't it B. Is slang learning necessary at school
C. How to teach slang at school D. Slang or not slang at school

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long. ___51___ You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. ___52___
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. ___53___ So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
___54___ But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.
A. To have a friend, you must learn to be a friend.
B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. No two friendships are ever exactly similar.
D. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem.
E. These can be valuable to a friend.

Police dogs are given special training to help the police with their work. Many different types of dogs can be trained to do this work, but the best known ones are German shepherds and bloodhounds. In Britain, police dogs usually have a 13-week training course and many dogs fail. Not all dogs make good police dogs. They must be completely reliable and obedient. Most police dogs live with their handlers as part of the family, but they are not pets. They are working dogs and they have a job to do.
Police dogs are trained to chase and hold people who are trying to get away from the police. Police dogs are not vicious animals. They are trained to hold on to people until their handler tells them to let go.
Police dogs often go into dangerous places and they are given special vests to protect them from knife and gun attacks.
Dogs are not only trained to chase and catch criminals. They are also used for following suspects or finding missing people. This is because some dogs, such as bloodhounds.have a very good sense of smell and can be trained to recognize certain types of smells. Some dogs are used to find survivors after earthquakes or explosions and some are specially trained to find dead bodies.
In many countries dogs are used in airports to check luggage for drugs and bombs. Labradors, spaniels and beagles are used for this because they are friendly dogs and people are-not afraid of them.

十一、书面表达:
One possible version:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I'm happy to hear that there is an empty area in our school for building a Culture Corner or a Vegetable Garden. In my opinion, it's better to build a vegetable garden. The reasons are as follows.
First of all, our country advocates labor education. Second, students can work with their classmates in the garden to strengthen their friendship. Third, working in the garden can help students learn farming skills. Fourth, a garden built on the empty land can harvest a lot of vegetables, such as tomatoes, potatoes, carrots and so on, which can save the cost of food for the school. Last but not least, students can form the habit of labor by planting vegetables.
This is not only good for the school, but also good for the growth of students.
Yours,
Li Hua
