“We were amazed at what we were seeing on a hot summer’s day, when a group of people with Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病) began rock climbing on the Carderock Cliffs of Maryland. Yes, rock climbing! It’s all part of their therapy (疗法),” says Molly Cupka, the no-nonsense instructor and cheerleader for this community of courageous climbers. She started this program, called Up ENDing Parkinson’s, as a non-profit 12 years ago.
There’s no cure for Parkinson’s disease, which usually affects mobility, coordination, balance, and even speech. Jon Lessin was diagnosed (诊断) in 2003. He was once an all-around athlete. About 12 years ago, he retired because of Parkinson’s disease. It was Lessin who first had that big idea to use rock climbing as a therapy for Parkinson’s disease. “I wanted to do big-movement exercise,” he said. “And I found Molly Cupka at this gym.”
Lessin proposed the idea to Molly Cupka, who runs the Sportrock Climbing Centers in Alexandria, Virginia. She thought it was worth a try, given the sport requires participants to plan ahead, and to know where to position their hands and feet. “I wish I could go into the brain and see what’s happening while people climb,” Molly Cupka said.
There’s no evidence that climbing slows the progress of Parkinson’s disease, but Molly Cupka joined forces with Marymount University last year to study patients climbing for the first time. “We have people literally walking and carrying weights, you know, walking and looking, multitasking,” she said, The study found that, in so many words, if you climb, you may walk better.
Marymount University’s Center for Optimal Aging studies on physical and psychosocial effects of rock climbing on individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Mark de Mulder, a musician and former director of the National Geospatial Program, doesn’t need a study to prove what climbing does for him. “It allows me to say, ‘All right, take that, Parkinson’s! I’m doing this!’ It just makes me feel stronger, and I’m fighting it. I’m doing something about it.”
Many of the climbers have become friends who climb together several times a week, and they’ve become a support group, Parkinson’s Pals, who encourage each other.
4. How may people feel when seeing those with Parkinson’s disease rock climbing
A. Astonished. B. Confused. C. Annoyed. D. Embarrassed.
5. Why did Molly Cupka decide to try rock climbing therapy
A. It’s a low-impact exercise. B. It requires no planning.
C It involves multitasking. D. It’s an individual activity.
6. What did the study reveal about rock climbing to people with Parkinson’s disease
A. It improves their social life. B. It boosts their walking ability.
C. It completely cures the disease. D. It slows the progress of the disease.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Rock Climbing as a Sport
B. Living with Parkinson’s Disease
C. The Impact of Exercise on Parkinson’s Disease
D. Fighting Parkinson’s Disease with Rock Climbing

Lotus, ginkgoes, Chinese roses....On the campus of Beijing 101 Middle School, there are more than 200 types of plants. To keep a record of the rich natural resources there, the school’s students made a beautiful book: Flora of 101.
“We chose 30 plants to show with pictures, basic information and particularly, a poem for each plant written by ourselves,” said 17-year-old Wang Jayantha chief editor of the book.
The poems are not just describing the plants. They also reflect students’ stories.” One day I was a little upset when I smelt a fragrance (芳香). Looking down, I saw humifuse euphorbia, or dijincao (地锦草), a very common plant. Suddenly I felt comforted—it just grows and gives off a sweet scent, regardless of people stepping on it. So I wrote a poem for it,“ said Wang Jianyuan.
“Every poem in the book shows students’ unique understanding of the plants, showing our school’s character and spirit through the book,” Wang Jianyuan added.
Wang Jingyue, 17, painted the pictures for the book. “Many students in our school love painting. We took photos of the plants and drew them in a realistic style,” Wang Jingyue said. “Sitting there and painting give us a chance to closely watch a plant and connect with it. It feels amazing.”
The students plan to print 300 copies of the book this September to give out to new students. “We hope the younger students can fall in love with the plants and the ecosystem in our school. Hopefully, when they walk along the green alleys (小径), they can find peace and inspiration.” said Wang Jianyuan.

Every week, Angela looked at her recycling bin, filled with shampoo bottles and plastic containers, with mixed feelings. Sure, it was a lot of plastic, but it was going to be recycled. Or so she thought. Then, her husband sent her some articles revealing that less than 6% of the country’s plastic gets recycled. She was shocked.
Determined to cut back on her plastic consumption, Angela got a starter kit from a company selling refillable household cleaners (家用清洁器). In it were tablets, containing concentrated hand soap as well as glass and bathroom cleaners, and four empty containers. She filled each one with tap water, then dropped in a tablet and watched it dissolve. If she was happy with the cleaners, she would order more tablets but reuse the containers. No new plastic required.
Given plastic’s harmful effects on the environment, nearly three quarters of Americans say they are trying to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic, according to Pew Research Center. Since plastic is everywhere and avoiding it altogether is extraordinarily difficult, some, like Angela, have revived a once-customary practice: refilling containers. Household cleaners seem particularly prepared for a refill revolution, for many can be easily concentrated and reconstituted (with water. If just 10% to 20% of plastic packaging are reused, a report from the World Economic Forum estimates, the amount of plastic waste entering the ocean will be cut in half.
Not everyone is as enthusiastic, though. Jan Dell, a chemical engineer, noted that many cleaning products are packaged in PET or HDPE, two types of plastic with relatively high recycling rates. So she is less concerned about them but far more concerned about the packaging of other products. “What companies should be focusing on is everything else that isn’t recyclable, that is single use and that often becomes plastic pollution,” she said, pointing to plastic bags and cups. “This is just a classic example of big corporations doing something to attract people’s attention over here on something that’s not the main issue to distract from all the single-use plastic they’re pushing out.”
12. Why is Angela mentioned
A. To promote a tablet. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To clarify a concept. D. To recommend a kit.
13. What does the underlined word “dissolve” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Float over water. B. Turn over in water.
C. Change color in water. D. Mix with water.
14. What’s Jan Dell’s attitude towards the deeds of big corporations
A. Critical. B. Favourable.
C. Conservative. D. Unconcerned.
15. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A chemistry paper. B. An academic report.
C. A lifestyle magazine. D. A cleaner advertisement.

47. 读后续写
As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her fiend, Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy". So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.
Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym; it was always, "Who gets the privilege(荣耀)of being Jennifer's partner." It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.
I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
Most of the time we gossiped(传播流言蜚语)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

【答案】Finally, near the end of the school year, I got sick of being treated so poorly. I was sick of getting into battle for friendship. I stopped sitting with Jennifer at lunch and waiting for her after class. It didn’t take long: Jennifer quickly announced that I was “mad at her”. I said, “I’m not mad, I just think I need to make some more friends.” But with Jennifer it’s all or nothing. If you didn’t worship her, she was convinced you were mad at her. So our friendship fell to pieces.
I’m in Grade 7 now, and I have tons of friends. I’ve found many girls Jennifer classified as “mean” were the sweetest people in the world. We have fun together and I love them all to bits. It amazes me how easy our friendship is. There’s no struggling to be on top—we’re all equal. It doesn’t hurt my feelings or make me feel alone. I wish Jennifer could understand, I still want to be friends with her, but I can’t limit myself to one friendship. It’s better to have ten or twenty friends than just one best friend.
