“Have you checked the oil in the car, Ted ” my father used to say to me. Sometimes our phone calls would begin and end with an only inquiry(询问) about the oil, without asking anything else. Fathers have lots of love to give, but it’s often provided through useful advice. In my experience, it’s mostly about the car.
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you” Why can’t the sentences “I care about you” and “You made my life better from the moment you were born” be heard Because fathers tend to express their true feelings indirectly. You just have to understand the language—Fatherlish(父亲式语言).
When I was 17 years old, I went on my first road trip in that old car. My father stood on the corner on a cold early morning to say goodbye. “Roads are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try driving faster than a horse. And remember to take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time I thought his speech was pretty funny and old.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that if I had owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I would have understood that the speech that I always laughed at was simply Dad’s way to express love and care.
24.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.The author’s father expressed his love differently.
B.The author forgot to check the oil regularly.
C.The author wanted to buy a new car badly.
D.The author’s father preferred to make phone calls.
25.Why does the author mention his first road trip
A.To show the danger of the trip. B.To tell a very exciting experience.
C.To explain the rules of driving. D.To present his father’s hidden love.
26.How does the author feel about his father’s speech at last
A.Caring. B.Traditional. C.Funny. D.Old.
27.What can be the best title for the text
A.Checking the Oil B.Making Phone Calls
C.Speaking Fatherlish D.Taking Helpful Advice
Sure, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.
And yes, it’s good to get along well with your teacher because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to get along well with the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life.
In fact, kids who get along well with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable with asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier for them to understand new materials and makes them do their best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school issues (问题).
Here is a question: What if you don’t get along with your teachers In fact, teachers want to get along well with you and enjoy seeing you learn. But teachers and students sometimes have personality clashes (个性冲突), which can happen between any two people. If you show your teacher that you want to make the situation better, he or she will probably do everything possible to make that happen. By dealing with a problem like this, you learn something about how to get along with people who are different from you.
However, if a certain teacher isn’t your favorite, you can still have a successful relationship with him or her, if you take your basic responsibilities as a student. Here are some of those responsibilities:
Attend class ready to learn.
Be prepared for class with the right stationery, books, and completed homework.
Listen when your teacher is talking.
Do your best, whether it’s a classroom assignment, homework, or a test.
28.What will happen to you when getting along well with your teachers according to the passage
A.We will have no problems with study.
B.We will get a better seat in the classroom.
C.We will get the best scores in the exams.
D.We will have more pleasant time in the classroom.
29.If you don’t like a certain teacher, what should you do according to the author
A.We should ignore the differences between the teacher and us.
B.We should choose a new school.
C.We should study harder on weekends.
D.We should take our basic responsibilities as a student.
30.The passage is written for ________.
A.teachers B.students C.parents D.graduates
31.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Studying skills for students.
B.The importance of a good relationship with your teachers.
C.The importance of friendship in schools.
D.Useful skills to get along well with your parents.
Scientists at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom have created “the world’s smallest violin”. The violin is so tiny that it can only be seen with a powerful microscope (显微镜). The project was planned to test the limits of how small a violin could actually be.
The tiny violin is made of platinum, a silver-grey precious material (材料) used in making expensive jewellery and in industry. It is just 35 microns long and 13 microns wide. A micron is one millionth of a meter. This means that the violin is even thinner than a human hair.
The team at Loughborough University is working to build very tiny things through “nanolithography”. If you’ve ever used a stencil, you may understand it more easily. For example, you cut a violin-shaped hole in a piece of paper. That’s a stencil. When you draw on the paper with a pencil, the only part that gets filled in is the violin-shaped hole.
Nanolithography is more complicated (复杂的), but it follows a similar rule. To make the tiny violin, the researchers first covered a small chip with a special gel (凝胶). That was like the paper. There were two steps in creating the hole. First, a special machine with a super-tiny needle was used. The scientists heated the needle and “drew” the violin on the chip. The heat burns the gel on the chip where the needle touches. Then the scientists washed the burned part away, leaving a tiny violin-shaped hole in the gel. Next, they covered the chip with platinum. This filled the hole. Finally, they washed the chip again, this time clearing the rest of the gel, and leaving behind the tiny metal violin.
It took about three hours to create the violin, but the researchers spent several months developing the methods they used. Now the researchers plan to employ the technology to study more serious things. For example, they’re looking at new ways to store information and make computers work faster by heating.
32.What’s the scientists’ purpose in creating the tiny violin
A.To explore how small a violin can possibly be made.
B.To test a new invention that can see tiny objects.
C.To find out which material is best for making violins.
D.To show the university’s leading role in musical instrument making.
33.Why does the author mention stencil in paragraph 3
A.To give an example. B.To explain an idea.
C.To introduce a useful tool. D.To lead into a new topic.
34.What’s the main idea of paragraph 4
A.How the special gel is burned and washed away.
B.The steps and materials used to make the tiny violin.
C.Why platinum is chosen as the material for the tiny violin.
D.The different roles of the gel and paper in making the violin.
35.What does the underlined word “employ” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Challenge. B.Change. C.Examine. D.Use.
Starting high school is a great experience for any teenager. Whether you are coming from a middle school (grades six through eight) or a junior high school (grades seven through nine), there are many things about high school that are different from your old school environment. 36

On top of all this, peer pressure to drink and smoke often increases in high school. 38
Although there is a lot of pressure, it is nothing you cannot deal with. If you are feeling pressure to do something that you feel is wrong, talk to a friend, parent or counselor to find a solution. 39 If you are not succeeding academically, find someone to help you. If you feel lonely, try to join a school club or group to make new friends.
40 With time you will come to be thankful for everything about your experience. On the point of starting your high school, are you ready

C.High school may seem discouraging at first.
D.They want to help you get into college.
E.They are there to help you get into this great new time in your life.
