In an unbelievable act of care and kindness, a man from Turkey was found trying to warm a pigeon in a surprisingly creative way.
Sabahattin Yilmaz was at home one chilly day. After a rain shower had passed, he noticed something landed on the sill (窗台) outside his window — a cold and wet pigeon. The animal was shaking and wet; it clearly didn’t have the chance to get out of the rain. Feeling for the poor pigeon, Yilmaz thought of a way to dry him off.
Rather than pick him up and take him inside to warm up, Yilmaz turned on a hairdryer and used it to dry off the bird. Little did he know that his neighbor filmed the whole moment on video. In the video, Yilmaz can be seen leaning out of his window. He was reaching out his arm as far as he can so the hot air can reach the pigeon. The bird willingly let the man warm him up, crouching (蹲伏) to let his outer feathers dry.
Yilmaz told the media that he spent about fifteen minutes drying off the bird. He said he had just opened his window when he saw the pigeon around the corner of the sill. He described it as wet and “about to freeze” from the cold and rainy weather.
After fifteen minutes, Yilmaz gave the pigeon birdseed, which he ate happily. However, the bird remained wet still. “I saw that it was still there so I warmed it up again, after the pigeon got better again, and after eating quite some seed, it flew away,” Yilmaz said.
He also didn’t know that he was being recorded at the time and that the video was shared online. He simply did it out of the kindness of his heart. “The pigeon is a living being and had a right to continue living, that is why I did it,” he said.
4. What was the bird’s reaction to Sabahattin Yilmaz’s behavior?
A. It was frightened and flew away.
B. It was annoyed and refused his help.
C. It was ready to accept his help.
D. It was happy to live in his home.

D. A pigeon was jumping back and forth when dried off.

A. He wanted to make a video to share online.
B. He thought the pigeon was a valuable bird.
C. He believed the living being was worth saving.
D. He hoped the pigeon would stay and become his pet.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Sabahattin Yilmaz?
A. Creative but indifferent.
B. Patient and curious.
C. Smart but careless.
D. Caring and warm-hearted.
C
You may not consider yourself the patient type. Maybe your first-grade teacher pointed this out when you were pulling the door open before the bell even sounded. As a grown-up, maybe you press the “close door” button in the lift many times. You’re not alone. Impatience has become a sign of a troubled society.
The time we save to get to our destination (目的地) faster is not worth the price we pay for our health. As we all know, in traffic making rash (草率的) decisions can send yourself and others to hell. In addition, there is a close relation between impatient people and many health problems.
A 2011 study, for example, suggests impatience may even be making us fat. If you are willing to give up present satisfaction for future benefits (利益), it shows you are the patient type. If, however, you want your satisfaction right now without considering future benefits, it’s a sign of impatience. You don’t need to do a lot of research to connect impatience with high blood pressure (压力) and even heart disease. Besides, being impatient could cause anxiety . And if you’re always anxious, your sleep could be affected, too.
So learning to be patient is important. The good news is that we can all learn to be patient. The first thing to do is to recognize that you have a problem. There are all kinds of everyday situations that test patience. Once you’ve found that cause, though, it will be a lot easier to break the bad habit. Most importantly, once we understand that what makes us impatient isn’t within our control, we can change the way we understand that situation. If you’ve made it, congratulations. You’re already on your way.
8. Why is traffic mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To explain the cause of impatience. B. To prove the dangers of impatience.
C. To show the terrible traffic situation. D. To show the importance of traffic rules.
9. The 2011 study mainly shows the relation between ________.
A. anxiety and sleep quality B. impatience and health problems
C. present satisfaction and future benefits D. childhood experiences and grown-up behaviors
10. What is the most important thing for people to fight impatience?
A. Learning to control their impatience.
B. Finding out what makes them impatient.
C. Testing their patience in everyday situations.
D. Realizing what causes their impatience is uncontrollable.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Be more patient B. What causes impatience?
C. Patient people laugh best D. Why are people impatient?
D
It may seem hard to believe, but snacking several times a day can improve your health and fitness — exercise snacking, that is. “Exercise snacks” are short bursts of activity — 30 seconds to 5 or 10 minutes max — that include almost any type of movement. Think climbing stairs, walking, cycling, or dancing. Today, many studies prove these mini workouts can make a difference.
Doing 15-to 30-second exercise snacks three times daily was shown to improve cardiorespiratory (心和肺的) fitness levels and exercise abilities in inactive adults, according to a small January 2022 study published in the journal Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews.
Adults who reported they didn’t do exercise saw a 17% to 18% drop of cancer cases after they began doing just 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of intense (激烈的) physical activity daily, a July 2023 study of 22,398 people found. Their daily physical activity was done in bursts lasting less than one or two minutes. Hitting 4.5 minutes (in total) of intense physical activity each day was connected with a 31% to 32% lower risk of cancer, according to the study published in JAMA Oncology.
The advantages of movement also include brain health. Doing even a small amount of easy to hard physical activity every day lowers your risk of dementia (痴呆) according to a March study in JAMDA: The Journal of the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association.
Exercise snacks are a favorite tool used by Dr. Supatra Tovar, owner of Dr. Supatra Tovar & Associates. “I’m a big proponent of behavior change that starts tiny,” Tovar said. “So I like to create behaviors with my customers that are easy, achievable and doable every day of the week.”
“Your body is kind of lazy,” said Michael Betts, a personal trainer and director at Train Fitness who’s based in London. “Doing these little exercise snacks reminds your body that it does need to work to keep and improve its overall health.”
12. What can be called an exercise snack according to the text?
A. Singing songs with your classmates.
B. Turning off the lights before leaving school.
C. Jogging without stopping for 20 minutes.
D. Rushing to the dining hall for lunch after class.
13. What is one good thing that exercise snacks bring according to the text?
A. Lowering cancer risk.
B. Improving muscle strength.
C. Keeping people away from dementia.
D. Improving the heart rate of inactive adults.
14. What does the underlined word “proponent” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Researcher. B. Judge.
C. Supporter. D. Explorer.
15. Which of the following may Michael Betts agree?
A. Exercise snacks are necessary.
B. More daily exercise is needed.
C. The body dislikes being active.
D. Long workouts are better.

Lily was waiting outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day and physics was first. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Amy looked back at her, and then looked away quickly. Lily thought she looked guilty (惭愧的). She didn’t have a problem with physics; she didn’t have a problem with anything... Miss Perfect!
“Hi, Lily, it’s your favourite exam today,” said Nina as she joined her. “So what’s wrong with Amy?” asked Nina. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Lily. “But she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam too, but she ignored all my calls and texts.” said Lily angrily. At that time, Mr. Reed asked all the students into the exam room.
Lily couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Amy sitting two rows in front of her. Lily couldn’t believe it! Amy was holding her phone on her knees under the table and reading from it. Is that how Amy always got such good grades? She felt really angry at her, but she didn’t know what to do. “Stop writing and put your pens down.” said Mr. Reed as he started to collect the exam papers.
Lily wanted to talk to Amy at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Lily’s favourite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. “It wasn’t fair” she thought. “Amy was getting good grades by cheating all that time,” thought Lily. Just then, Mr. Reed walked past her table. “Mr. Reed.” As she spoke to him, she noticed Amy through the window, standing alone in the courtyard, her shoulders slumped (下垂) as if carrying a heavy weight. But Lily was too angry to care.
Lily was sitting behind Amy again in the history exam that afternoon. Lily was feeling terrible. Why had she told Mr. Reed? But it was too late now. Mr. Reed wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Amy was cheating in the exam.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
She was working on the last question when she saw that Amy had her phone under the table.

After fifteen minutes, Yilmaz gave the pigeon birdseed, which he ate happily. However, the bird remained wet still. “I saw that it was still there so I warmed it up again, after the pigeon got better again, and after eating quite some seed, it flew away,” Yilmaz said.

A. Researcher. B. Judge.
C. Supporter. D. Explorer.

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Wang Ming,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling to balance your study and club activities. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when adapting to a new environment, so don’t be too hard on yourself — many students face similar challenges. Here’s some advice.
First, create a weekly schedule, prioritizing study time over clubs since grades are vital for your future. Second, if club demands clash with study, politely reduce your involvement temporarily. Third, take short breaks during study to stay focused and efficient.
Remember, balancing takes time. Start with small adjustments and gradually find a rhythm that works. I’m confident you’ll manage both well. Let me know if you need more tips!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
She was working on the last question when she saw that Amy had her phone under the table.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Lily was walking towards the school gate, when she saw Amy. “Lily, I want to talk to you.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】She was working on the last question when she saw that Amy had her phone under the table. Lily nodded to Mr. Reed, trying to signal him. Her heart pounded as she watched Mr. Reed walk towards Amy quietly. Part of her felt angry that Amy was cheating, but another part felt a twinge of sympathy. After all, she didn’t know what Amy was going through. When Mr. Reed took Amy’s phone away and asked her to leave the room, Lily felt a mix of relief and guilt wash over her.
Lily was walking towards the school gate, when she saw Amy. “Lily, I want to talk to you.” Amy’s voice was shaky, and her eyes were red. “I’m so sorry I ignored you,” she said. “My mom had a heart problem two weeks ago. I’ve been going to the hospital after school every day, and I was too scared to tell you — I didn’t want to bother you with my worries. Today, I checked my phone during exams because my dad said he’d send updates about her surgery.” Lily felt a rush of guilt. “I’m sorry I thought you were cheating,” she said, hugging Amy. “I should’ve trusted you.” The two girls stood there, smiling through tears, their friendship mended.
