For generations, the name Milton Hershey has been a well-known word closely connected with fine chocolate products throughout the country and around the world. He was born in 1857 on a farm near Derry Church, a small Pennsylvania community. Frequent family moves interrupted (中断) his schooling and left him with limited education. He only completed the fourth grade.
Following a four-year apprenticeship (学徒期) with a Lancaster candy maker, he established his first candy-making business in Philadelphia. That initial effort failed as did his next two attempts in Chicago and New York. Returning to Lancaster in 1883, Hershey established the Lancaster Caramel Company, which quickly became an outstanding success. It was this business that established him as a candy maker and set the stage for future achievements.
Hershey became fascinated with German chocolate-making machinery exhibited at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. He bought the equipment for his Lancaster plant and soon began producing various chocolate creations. Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Co. in 1900 in order to focus entirely on his chocolate business.
Three years later, he returned to Derry Church to build a new factory. There he could obtain the large supplies of fresh milk needed to perfect and produce fine milk chocolate. Through trial and error (反复试验), he created his own formula (配方) for milk chocolate. In 1903 he began construction on what was to become the world’s largest chocolate plant. After its completion, Hershey’s milk chocolate quickly became the first nationally marketed product of its kind.
With Milton Hershey’s success came a great sense of social responsibility. Hershey created a complete new community around his factory. He built a model town for his employees that included comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation system, a quality public school system and broad cultural opportunities. The town of Hershey continues to be a special place for its residents and a popular attraction for millions of visitors each year. Indeed, Milton Hershey’s achievements do speak for themselves.

While we race into a future where we outsource most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing (做手势) in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to smooth out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
8.What can we learn about artful thinking
A.It simplifies problem-solving. B.It focuses on developing our brains.
C.It prevents us from over-relying on AI. D.It helps promote high-tech machinery.
9.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Benefits of artful intelligence. B.Mind-body awareness in thinking.
C.Significance of being mindful. D.Social interaction through movements.
10.What does the author suggest we do in the AI-filled world
A.Enhance the flexibility of attention. B.Adapt to the rise of AI.
C.Avoid the interruptions from Big Tech. D.Improve the levels of focus.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Artful Thinking Advances Big Tech B.Too Much Trust in AI Harms Our Minds
C.Physical Actions Better Cognitive Functions D.Mindfulness Keeps Us Human in the Age of AI
Twice a year for the last 29 years, scientists have walked through the same sections of tallgrass prairie (大草原) in Kansas and recorded as many species as they could find. The goal was to determine the impact of American bison (野牛) on the ecosystem. Tallgrass prairies used to cover a huge part of Texas. Today this habitat is at risk of disappearing, present in just four percent of its former range.
Now, decades of efforts and data show a surprising result: When bison were allowed to seek food through prairie, they increased plant species richness by 86 percent. “The big effect bison had knocked us out, ”says Zak Ratajczak, an ecologist at Kansas State University. “I don’t think anyone would have prognosticated this ahead of time. ”252 earlier similar studies worldwide showed bison’s effects were relatively slight.
As for reasons, Ratajczak has some theories. Bison tend to choose one area, eating everything up there, while leaving another area of the prairie untouched. They also go around forming disturbances in the soil, forming holes. These are areas where they roll around and shake off their winter coats, and that creates little spots of unique types of soil features. The spots harden and collect water after rain, for example, creating wetlands, which allow more plants to grow. By promoting different types of plant growth, scientists believe bison could help their ecosystems become more adaptable to droughts.
Millions of bison lived in the US in the mid 1800s, before the government killed the population, reducing their numbers to a few hundred by 1889. The findings suggest ongoing efforts to reintroduce bison could have enormous and long-term benefits. “That is a relationship that was cut off,” says Jason Baldes, a member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe. “As we restore this connection, it favors bison. And bison, by their presence, boost our land.”
12.What was the purpose of scientists walking through the same sections of tall grass prairie in Kansas
A.To seek greater biodiversity.
B.To record many species as they could find.
C.To research the reason why this habitat is at risk.
D.To identify the influence of bison on the ecosystem.
13.What does the underlined word “prognosticated” mean in paragraph 2
A.Considered. B.Accepted. C.Predicted. D.Ignored.
14.How do bison promote plant species richness
A.By keeping away from prairies. B.By changing soil characteristics.
C.By providing food and habits. D.By helping plants survive droughts.
15.What does Baldes think of the reintroduction of bison
A.It is a win-win situation. B.It should be done long ago.
C.It has a long-lasting benefit. D.It requires efforts from many sides.
Imagine climbing a mountain and getting half way up and saying to yourself, “You know what, I’m going to climb back down and finish this later.”
16 We have projects that sit waiting to be completed. Some people start college but never graduate. We have books that we never finish reading. 17 Many people are great at beginning things but can’t seem to finish strong.
Not finishing what we started has been a repeated problem for us. We have to face it. 18 Whenever we delay, or put to the side, the things that will help us accomplish our goals, we stop developing our potential.
Not finishing not only causes us to stop making progress but also we find it harder whenever we do decide to start again. Consider this: every time I begin a new exercise program my muscles are sore (疼) for a few days. After a few weeks of routine, the muscles get accustomed to the program and grow stronger. Thus, no more sore muscles. Well, when I take some time off I fear starting again. 19
Strong finishers are able to focus on getting the best result from anything that they start. So how do we know that we are a strong finisher Along with the huge feeling of accomplishment, other people will begin to notice the change. 20 They will have no choice but to recognize our strong finishing ability. We will be rewarded with more trust from them.
A.The list goes on and on.
B.We should have the confidence.
C.Why don’t we have the interest any more
D.Sounds silly, but that is what we do all of the time.
E.I know that my muscles are going to be sore again.
F.They will see we are able to climb and conquer the mountain.
G.Not being a strong finisher can limit our ability to conquer our goals.

五、书面表达
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We were in our late 20s with a child when my husband, Ralph, finally graduated from college.
“OK, now I deserve a piano,” I blurted out when he sat down for lunch just before the graduation ceremony. A look of surprise crossed his face.
“We could never afford a piano. After so many years of hard work, we got you through school. Now I deserve a piano,” I repeated.
Several months later, Ralph, with help, moved the upright piano we bought for $ 100 into our cottage’s tiny arched dining room. It smelled a little musty, but had great tone.
Ralph started graduate school, leaving no money for private piano lessons. The first thing that came to my mind was Santa Monica City College—maybe it offered piano lessons. Skimming the catalog, I danced around the room when I found a class at the same time the boys were at preschool.
Practicing, however, was not so easy. Four-year old redheaded Denny crawled out of bed in the evening on a regular basis. That was my time to practice. He’d pad out of the bedroom in his sleeper and climb up on the bench with me. Soon he began plinking (发出叮铃声) on the high keys. I tried to ignore him. He listened to the echoes of the keys and plinked some more. Doing all I could do to keep focused on my own practicing, I continued to ignore him.
This practice pattern became an evening routine. After a while, I didn’t even hear him anymore. Ralph studied. Denny plinked on the high keys, and I focused on my piece for the end-of-the-term recital (独奏会).
That evening came. However, Ralph said he was busy preparing for the midterms and couldn’t watch Denny.
Pacing back and forth, I shook my head trying to figure out what to do. Time was running out. I bundled up Denny—with his sleeper on—and drove off to the recital with him.
“We’ll sit in the front row, Denny,” I whispered. “You have to be very quiet and listen when I am playing.” He nodded, said “Uh-huh,” and we sat down.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Denny held my hand, but then my turn came.

47.I told Danny it was my turn to play, be good, and be quiet when I play, and I'll come back to you when I'm done. He nodded and said I would be good, but I looked at Danny hesitantly and walked straight to the stage to begin my play. I wanted to give the audience my best. I was so absorbed in my performance that I forgot Danny was offstage.
I was playing to my heart's content, and I saw Danny climbing onto my piano stool, next to me. He was very quiet there. He didn't make a sound. He watched me play. My hanging heart calmed down and I focused more on my playing. Far from freaking me out, the arrival of the baby gave me a great deal of confidence, and I managed to complete my solo without a problem. When I finished, there was thunderous applause and I picked up my little Danni to thank the audience and waved off the stage.
