A
Over the centuries, we have discovered more and more about our world, and it is easy to think that everything that could be discovered already has been. But that is not true—the world holds many more secrets that are waiting to be revealed. Here are four places that have yet to be opened up completely.
The Mariana Trench
The deepest and darkest place in the ocean is the 11,000-meter-deep Mariana Trench. Due to cold temperatures and huge water pressure, the deep ocean is totally unfriendly to humans. Although technological advances have led to the discovery of many new varieties of deep-sea animals on the ocean floor, there is a lot more to be learned. In fact, only 2% of the ocean floor has been explored.
The Amazon rainforest
The Amazon rainforest is said to make up around 50% of all of the rainforests in the world. Interest in its climate and resources has resulted in certain explorations. However, due to its inaccessibility, full exploration of the region has been almost impossible. Up to now, 2.5 million insect species and 400,000 plant species have been officially documented.
Greenland
About 81% of Greenland is covered in ice, so it is almost completely unpopulated and a relatively small number of people who do live there tend to live only on the ice-free coast. Greenland has only been explored to a limited extent, as the climate is quite unsuitable for human life. Although research explorations are currently being carried out, the most interesting research in Greenland might tell us more about the past than the present.
Deserts
Very few explorations have been conducted because of the unwelcoming environments for human beings in the deserts. It is almost impossible to survive long periods of time in the desert. Thus, desert explorations have frequently had terrible results—many people are known to have died on such explorations. It is unclear whether anything of particular interest would be uncovered by further research into deserts, although there are animal and plant species there which are special because they have developed to survive in very high temperatures and with very little water.

China’s foreign trade has continued to show that strong resilience (韧性) and ongoing support from its opening-up policies will drive its economic growth throughout the year, government officials and experts said. They said that China’s enriched trade ties with Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, alongside expanding fields such as technology-led green products and international e-commerce, are helping Chinese exporters gain a competitive edge in global markets.
According to the General Administration of Customs, China’s foreign trade reached 28.58 trillion yuan ($4.02 trillion) in the first eight months of this year, an increase of 6 percent year-on-year. This strong growth was driven by a 6.9 percent year-on-year rise in exports, while imports increased by 4.7 percent.
China’s foreign trade with emerging economies (新兴经济体) has grown at a faster pace than its trade with the United States and European countries, while general trade has shown greater resilience compared with processing trade, said Li Ke’aobo, executive deputy director of Tsinghua University’s Academic Center for Chinese Economic Practice and Thinking.
During the January-August period, China’s trade with countries and regions participating in the Belt and Road Initiative reached 13.48 trillion yuan, up 7 percent year-on-year, customs data showed.

Since the beginning of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, many exciting and unforgettable moments have been shared by athletes and audiences worldwide. But beyond the victories and defeats, there is something more to admire: the positive and energetic manner of China’s young athletes, coupled with their amazing record-breaking achievements.
On Aug 4, 21-year-old Zheng Qinwen made history for Chinese tennis by winning the first gold medal in women’s singles for both China and Asia. Just the following day, the young Chinese swimming team ended the US’s decadeslong unbeaten history in the men’s 4 \times 100 \, \text{m} relay.
Equally inspiring is the positive mindset exhibited by these young athletes. They are confident and inclusive (包容的), both in competition and cross-cultural interactions, trying hard to achieve excellence and breakthrough performances.
Moreover, they have moved away from the “gold medal only” mindset, embracing (拥抱) a calmer and more sensible approach to sports, which reflects a significant change in their view. There are countless examples. From 18-year-old BMX freestyle cyclist Deng Yawen to 26-year-old swimmer Zhang Yufei, many young athletes have captivated global audiences and held the world’s attention with their self-assured approach to competition. They enjoy competing from the bottom of their heart. When Zhang, China’s “butterfly queen”, missed out on a gold medal, she said, “I hope this time I can have a relaxed attitude and really enjoy the Olympics.”
This change in mindset and manner has moved the public focus away from just winning gold medals to appreciating the respect and honor that athletes and the Olympics truly deserve. On the Olympic stage, these young people uphold the proud traditions of Chinese sports while showing a new image of a confident and open China.
But what exactly is the Olympic spirit It’s not just about being faster, higher, stronger, but also about embracing sports with a positive attitude.
11. What can we know about the athletes mentioned in the passage
A. “Butterfly queen” Zhang Yufei won a gold medal in the competition.
B. The US swimming team was the champion in the men’s 4 \times 100 \, \text{m} relay.
C. 18-year-old BMX freestyle cyclist Deng Yawen really enjoyed competing.
D. Zheng Qinwen won the first gold medal for Chinese tennis in women’s doubles.
12. Which words can best describe the Chinese athletes
A. Calm and brave.
B. Confident and inclusive.
C. Generous and humorous.
D. Hard-working and open-minded.
13. What is the meaning of the underlined word “captivate” in Paragraph 4
A. Relax.
B. Attract.
C. Benefit.
D. Encourage.
14. What was the public focus in the past
A. Winning gold medals.
B. Valuing respect for athletes.
C. Showing a new image of China.
D. Enjoying the unforgettable moments.
