Power of Public Speaking has partnered with ASI Innovation Labs to integrate artificial intelligence into the Pops Classroom platform for improving public speaking skills. The first project is the Pops Advisor which provides an automatic evaluation of students' video presentations with visual feedback
The Advisor offers on-demand comments to students practicing public speaking from anywhere. This flexibility benefits instructors, who can be as hands-on or hands-off during practice. While students can operate autonomously with the tool, instructors can also choose to keep track of students' progress.
Criteria
Using machine learning models, the Pops Advisor analyzes the following criteria:
Delivery Introduction Body Conclusion
Vocal Style Credibility Support Signaling
Vocal Quality Attention Language Ending
Vocal Filler Central Idea Connective Summary
Eye Contact Preview Credibility Memorable
Body Language Connective Organization Ending Credibility
Feedback
The presenter receives feedback on the above four categories. And this feedback is given in the following formats:
Recommendations
To provide presenters with valuable feedback for the next practice, recommendations focus on specific aspects needing improvement. For instance, the recommendation can be “Your message is clear, but be sure you are grabbing your audience’s attention in your introduction to ensure they are listening.”
Speech Metrics (指标)
Useful speech metrics serve as quantitative descriptors on several aspects of the presentation including number of words, total presentation time, speaking rate and vocal fillers percentage.
Pops Advisor can be used in any classroom setting where students are presenting, particularly in the Basic Public Speaking Course. When you are considering what can be achieved by your students toward skill development in a single school semester, Advisor increases the overall development.

My head was so full of digital noise that it felt like my brain was about to blow a fuse (导火线). I had no greater power of concentration than the lifeless stare of a goldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed to admit that my love of books had been vitiated by a brain that simply could not sit still.
So, this year I committed myself to restoring books to the place that they held in my life before the Internet broke my brain.
My goal was 52 books: It seemed like an impossible task. A 400-page book will take the average person around eight hours to read. Finding the time to read was a challenge but here’s how I did it. I started with treating my mind like a misbehaving child, who needs some discipline laid down. Then I decided that I would read for an hour or two at a time without distraction each day. It was something I hadn’t done in years and it was scary how difficult it was.
In his book, The Distracted Mind, Larry Rosen says that the more we practice spending time away from our electronic devices, the calmer and more focused we become. And this is what I found. Again and again, I would gently bring myself back to the page, resisting the urge to reach for that screen, an experience that echoes Nikki Gemmell, who describes in On Quiet, how investing in a safe to lock away her family’s devices for long periods had opened up a space for deep reflection. For me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just to read. It was like a date between me and my book. And it meant actively choosing to read at times when I normally would reach for my phone. I read on the tram, at the park, in bed at night and on lunch breaks.
By reawakening my love with books, I created a sacred space where I could press pause and found inspiration, knowledge, reflection and escape. In our modern world, reading is a powerful and beneficial way for us to slow down and be ourselves.
24. What does the underlined word “vitiated” mean in Paragraph 1
A. Activated. B. Removed. C. Restored. D. Weakened.
25. What was the first thing the author did to achieve the goal
A. Getting rid of the distractions.
B. Treating his mind with patience.
C. Establishing basic rules for himself.
D. Putting books to their original places.
26. Why does the author mention two books in Paragraph 4
A. To explain benefits of reading.
B. To advocate ways to find quiet.
C. To echo his personal experience.
D. To list disadvantages of digital noise.
27. What does the author want to convey in the text
A. Books are what have made us.
B. Rejecting the Internet is a top priority.
C. To return to books is to reclaim our focus.
D. The quietest people have the loudest minds.

A century ago, only 50 European wood bison (森林野牛) remained on Earth, and they were mostly restricted to nature reserves. But now their population has grown so much as to no longer be considered “Vulnerable” according to the global authority on conservation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in their latest Red List update.
“The conservation successes provide living proof that the world can set. and meet ambitious biodiversity targets,” said Dr. Jane Smart, Global Director of IUCN.
Eight of the 47 bison herds have special genes for long-term survival, so scientists need to move animals in and out of herds in order to make healthy genes continue. Establishing greater numbers of separate herds will also help prevent possible losses due to things like diseases or natural disasters.
This led to the creation of a project called “Wilder Blean” where Blean Woods in Kent, England, will receive Dutch and Polish bison to create the first wild herd on the island for 6,000 years.
English conservationists and wildlife managers are interested in the effects bison have on the landscape. As large grass-eating animals, the constant foraging (觅食), digging and breaking they do on the forest floor have been assumed to have positive effects on the ecosystem.
Bison kill weak or dead trees by eating their bark or rubbing against them to remove their thick winter fur. This turns the tree into food and habitat for insects, which in turn provide food for birds.
In this way they act like forestry experts, and the Kent Wildlife Trust hopes that this significant species will maintain declining populations of plants, birds, insects, and mammals by way of their unique habits.
28. What has made the European wood bison grow in large numbers
A. Being restricted to nature reserves.
B. Being updated on the latest Red List.
C. Being kept under effective conservation.
D. Being born with long-term survival genes.
29. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Providing living proof. B. Preventing natural disasters.
C. Establishing nature reserves. D. Setting up more separate herds.
30. What is the attitude of the Kent Wildlife Trust towards the project “Wilder Blean”
A. Supportive. B. Conservative. C. Skeptical. D. Objective.
31. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce the various actions of European wood bison.
B. To highlight the importance of setting and meeting targets.
C. To praise Dr. Jane Smart for his contributions to conservation.
D. To report the conservation successes for European wood bison.
D
Like previous leaps in technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will make the economy more productive but will also probably hurt some workers whose skills have been devalued. But this time around, how quickly will these effects come about History may provide an answer.
Consider the effects of previous advances in computing. Gordon Moore was famous for his prediction that the number of transistors (晶体管) on a computer chip would double every two years. The consequences of Moore’s Law are most obvious in the powerful computers and smartphones that almost everyone carries around these days. However, for at least two decades after Moore’s Law kicked in, America suffered from a productivity slowdown. The boom kicked in only during the 1990s.
Why did the advancement in computing power take so long to pay off for the economy In 1990, the economic historian Paul David published The Dynamo and the Computer. It drew a parallel between the effects of information technology and those of an earlier tech revolution, the electrification of industry.
As David noted, electric motors became widely available in the 1890s. But to take full advantage of electrification, manufacturers had to rethink the design of factories. Pre-electric factories were multistory buildings with crowded working spaces, because that was necessary to make efficient use of a steam engine in the basement driving the machines in the production system. It took a long time to realize that having each machine driven by its own motor made it possible to have one-story factories with wide space allowing easy movement-of-materials. As a result, the big productivity gains from electrification didn’t materialize until after World War II.
Sure enough, as David, in effect, predicted, the economic payoff from information technology finally kicked in during the 1990s. But this history still presents a few puzzles. One is why the first productivity boom from information technology was so short-lived; basically it lasted only around a decade. And even while it lasted, productivity growth during the IT boom was not higher than it was during the generation-long boom after World War II, which didn’t seem to be driven by any new technology.
In 1969, Peter Drucker published The Age of Discontinuity, whose title implies that the previous period of extraordinary economic growth was actually an age of continuity. Or to put it another way, the great boom from the 1940s to around 1970 seems to have been largely based on the use of technologies that had been around for decades, which should make us less confident in trying to use recent technological developments to predict economic growth.
That’s not to say that artificial intelligence won’t have huge economic impacts. But history suggests that they won’t come quickly. ChatGPT and whatever follows are probably an economic story for the 2030s, not for the next few years.
32. When was Gordon Moore’s prediction most likely made
A. In 1945. B. In 1965. C. In 1985. D. In 1995.
33. What can be inferred from Paul David’s account of the electrification of industry
A. People tend to reject a new-technology when it first emerges.
B. Manufacturers are usually reluctant to adopt new technologies.
C. The design of workspace depends on the number of workers involved.
D. The availability of a technology does not guarantee its effective application.
34. What was the primary driver of the prolonged economic boom after World War II
A. Fuller use of already available technologies.
B. An era defined by technological discontinuity.
C. The launch of revolutionary new technologies.
D. Postwar recovery and global rebuilding efforts.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Impact of AI, Great but Slow
B. Tech Predictions, a Reliable Guide
C. AI, Promise of Instant Productivity
D. Computing Power, an Economic Booster

Bossy, dominant, controlling—have these labels ever come to mind when you think of others or yourself Or have others used these terms to describe you However, control isn’t purely negative. ___36___ Its role in our lives is far more complicated. Let’s unpack it.
___37___ Air traffic controllers ensure planes’ safe navigation. Teachers who manage classes effectively create a thriving environment. Self-control, too, is a cornerstone (基石) of personal growth, helping us pursue long term goals. These all show how control can be a force for order and progress.
But when control changes into a strong desire to be in charge all the time and make others do exactly what you want, many problems will start to appear. Some individuals use threats, or even force to impose their will. ___38___ If you recognize such behavior in others or experience it yourself, seeking support from trusted adults is crucial—they can help address the harm.
Psychologists link the desire for control to underlying anxiety. When we feel uncertain or that we don’t know what to do in life, the need to manage every little thing becomes a way to deal with our feelings. And gradually, it becomes a negative cycle which gains strength. ___39___ Life’s changes often spark control urges. Physical or emotional changes, family conflicts, or the loss of a loved one trigger feelings of powerlessness. Transitions like starting a new school or moving to a different city can also disrupt our sense of stability. In such moments, the need to regain control becomes intense. ___40___
A. This can be a form of abuse.
B. Control has clear positive applications.
C. This may worsen your self-confidence.
D. It’s a natural response to life’s unpredictability.
E. After all, your top priority is to rebuild certainty.

短文。
It was a cool autumn morning when the school announced the annual sports day.
For most students, it was a day of excitement and joy, but for me, it was just another
event I wanted to avoid. I had always been the type to shy away from group activities,
preferring the company of my books and thoughts.
Our class monitor, Sarah, noticed my unwillingness. She was the very image of
enthusiasm and leadership, always trying to bring the class together. One day, she
approached me during lunch. “Why don’t you join us for the relay race It’ll be fun,”
she said with a warm smile. I hesitated, but her perseverance was hard to ignore.
The next day, Sarah organized a practice session. I unwillingly joined, feeling out of place among my more athletic classmates. As we ran, I tripped and the baton (接力棒) fell, with my knee scraped (擦伤). Embarrassed, I wanted to quit, but Sarah was there in an instant, offering a hand and words of encouragement. “It’s okay, we’re a team.” she said. At this time, other fellow classmates came to encourage me. Their kindness made me feel less alone.
As the days went by, I found myself looking forward to the practices. The care and support among my classmates was touching. I began to see the value of teamwork and the joy of shared experiences. My initial unwillingness melted away, replaced by a newfound sense of belonging.
The anticipation for the sports day filled me with excitement. I dreamed of the cheers, the applauding crowd, and the excitement of competition. Training hard, I desired to show my skills, push my limits, share and feel the joy of victory. This event was more than a game; it meant a lot for me. I could not wait to be part of it!
