There's almost an app for everything nowadays, and this can make student life easier, cheaper, safer and more fun. Whether you want help with taking notes, revising, waking up on time or keeping fit, read on for our student app picks.
Lecture recording app
Just a few years ago, students attending lectures would have to spend the entire time writing wildly on notepads, in order not to miss any vital bit of information. Then along came technology, and now, lecture recording apps are a reality.
Sound Note is a popular lecture recording app for iPad users. You can store an entire lecture in both visual and audio form. Other good quality lecture recording apps include Notes Plus and Audio Notes Free—The Voice Recorder.

It's no wonder they call her Iron Grand. At the age of 61, she's the UK's oldest female Ironman triathlete (铁人三项运动员), and has lost count of the number of marathons she has run. Just as incredible is the fact that Edwina Brocklesby, or ''Eddie'' as she's known, only took up running in her 50s. With her boundless(无限的)energy and infectious smile, she inspires everyone she meets.
As well as her personal achievements, the super-granny also launched the charity Silverfit in 2013. It promotes sport for older people and started with events in London's parks and has since grown to have 2,000 members. Silverfit offers a range of activities for the over 45s. To make sure no one is excluded due to cost, membership is only 12 per year. As Eddie says: "It's absolutely essential with our aging population that they age healthily and that they have fun doing so. Our core message is that it's never too late to start exercising."
Len Bass, 76, has been coming along for two years. He wanted to get fitter after surviving stomach cancer that left him barely(几乎不)able to walk. Within weeks of joining he had begun to see a difference. "I was bent over when I started, but by the end of the first month I could run up hills. Thanks to Silverfit, today I'm really fit. I am off all medication(药物治疗)."
And Marjorie Barnes, 62, from Dulwich adds: "I had terrible back problems, and was walking with a stick when a friend recommended Silverfit. I joined Silverfit and within a year I'd alleviated(减轻,缓和)my back problems and even entered the London half marathon. I've got my freedom back and it's all due to the wonderful Eddie. She's amazing."
Eddie's personal drive to get fit was driven by her husband's sudden death in his 50s. Now Eddie has completed at least 12 marathons. "Running with friends helped me dramatically after I lost my husband. My advice would be to make the best of your life, and have fun."
24. What can we learn about Eddie

C. She broke the record for a marathon.
D. She always goes on trips to scenic spots.

A. To kill her leisure time.
B. To raise money for her career.
C. To support marathon athletes.
D. To encourage the old to exercise.
26. What did Len Bass say about Silverfit
A. It helped him realize his marathon dream.
B. It freed him from his medication.
C. It helped him make a friend.
D. It became a burden to him.
27. How might people most probably find Eddie's story

Have you ever wished you could be better organized or more sociable Perhaps you're a constant worrier, and you'd prefer to be a little more carefree Actually, at least 2/3 of people would like to change some elements of their personality. In the past, such desires appeared to be fruitless. One's personality was thought to be formed in childhood and to remain fixed throughout their entire life.
Recent research from psychology professor Nathan Hudson and his colleagues, however, challenges this perception of a fixed personality. With the right psychological strategies and enough effort, they say, many people can successfully shape their desired personality.
Their interventions(干预) typically involve recommending regular activities that reflect the personality traits(特征)people wish to adopt. Introverts who wish to be more outgoing, for example, might have the goal of introducing themselves to a stranger once a week, or making small talk with the cashier in the supermarket. Someone who wishes to be more organized and disciplined might be asked to carefully double-check an email before sending it, or to write a to-do list before going to bed.
While these tasks may seem insignificant, the aim is for the thinking patterns and behaviors they produce to become habitual(惯性的). And the evidence so far suggests it works remarkably well. In one 15-week trial of 400 people, participants accepted an average of two challenges each week. After they completed those tasks, their traits shifted in the desired direction, according to a personality questionnaire(调查问卷).
The unexpected personality change should be good news for anyone who wishes they were a bit more sociable, organized, or happy-go-lucky. Another potential benefit is that awareness of this research could help improve mental health.
People always believe negative feelings are just part of who they are, and there is little they can do to change them. But what if educating people about their potential for personality change could place them on a more positive path To test this idea, Havard professor of psychology, John Weisz, and his partner selected a group of 100 teenagers who had previously shown signs of anxiety or depression. They took a computerized course that explained the science of plasticity(可塑性),and were then given worksheets to strengthen what they had learned.
When Weisz checked in on the students' mental health nine months later, the students reported a significant decrease in anxiety and depression compared with those who had instead taken part in a course on “emotional expression”.
Whether you are struggling with serious issues or simply want to polish off your rougher edges, remember that character is within your own hands and you have the power to become what you want to be.

The Mozart in the Machine
Sometime in the coming decades, an external system that collects and analyzes biometric data(生物特征数据)will probably be able to understand what's going on in my body and in my brain much better than me. What will it do then Will art remain humanity's last line of defense(防御)against the rise of the all-knowing algorithms(算法)
In the modern world art is usually associated with human emotions. We tend to think that artists are controlling internal psychological forces, and that the whole purpose of art is to connect us with our emotions, or to inspire some new feeling in us. Consequently, when we come to evaluate art, we tend to judge it by its emotional impact and to believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder(观察者).
In 1952, the composer John Cage composed a musical piece 4'33''. This piece consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds during which no instrument plays anything. The piece encourages the audience to observe their inner experiences in order to examine what music is and what we expect of it. The message is that it is our own expectations and emotions that define music.
If art is defined by human emotions, what might happen once external algorithms are able to understand and manipulate human emotions better than Shakespeare, Picasso or Lennon After all, emotions are not some mysterious forces—they are a biochemical process. Therefore, given enough biometric data and enough computing power, it might be possible to hack(入侵)love, hate, boredom and joy.
Of all forms of art, music is probably the most sensitive to Big Data analysis, because the inputs are the inputs are the mathematical patterns of soundwaves, and the outputs are the electrochemical signals. Allow a learning machine to go over millions of musical experiences, and it will learn how particular inputs result in particular outputs.
Therefore, in the long run, algorithms may learn how to compose entire tunes, playing on human emotions as if they were a piano keyboard. Using your personal biometric data, the algorithms could even produce personalized melodies, which you alone in the entire world would appreciate.
Will this result in great art That depends on the definition of art. If beauty is indeed in the ears of their listener, then biometric algorithms stand a chance of producing the best art in history. If art is about something deeper than human emotions, biometric algorithms might not make very good artists. But nor would most humans. In order to enter the art market, algorithms won't have to begin by straight away beating Beethoven. It is enough if they outperform Justin Bieber.
32. The author mentions the musical piece 4'33'' to
A. discuss the effect of silence in a musical piece
B. emphasize its emotional impact on the audience
C. show the significance of emotions in defining music
D. encourage the audience to share their experiences
33. What does the underlined word "manipulate" in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Influence
B. Cover
C. Preserve
D. Appreciate
34. What can we learn from this passage
A. Computers will take the place of artists one day.
B. Human emotions are much more than biochemical signals.
C. Art is the final shelter of humanity against the all-knowing algorithms.
D. Personalized music may be available for people to enjoy in the future.

How Smartphone Adds to Your Weight
Using a smartphone at meal times can lead to an expanding waistline. Researchers have found that men and women consume 15% more calories when looking at their phones while eating. ___35___ The groundbreaking study suggests that staring at a phone screen may distract(分心)diners from how much food and what they are actually eating.
"It may prevent the correct understanding of the brain over the amount of food taken in", said researchers who filmed 62 volunteers eating alone.
The volunteers, aged 18 to 28, were divided into three groups and invited to help themselves to a choice of food—ranging from healthy options to soft drinks and chocolate—until they were satisfied. ___36___ On average, the volunteers ate 535 calories without the distraction of a smartphone but 591 when using a mobile. Those in the sample who are classed as overweight ate 616 calories without using their phones. When using their mobiles, the volunteers also consumed 10 percent more fatty foods. ___37___
"Smartphone use during a meal increased calorie and fat intake," said Marcia Gilberto Zangronimo, a lead author of the study—carried out at the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil and University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands. He added: "Tablets and smartphones have become the main distractors during meals, even early in childhood. ___38___ A distraction prevents the brain correctly understanding the amount of food accepted."
___39___A more detailed analysis can be found online.
A. They also ate more fatty food.

第四部分 阅读表达(共4小题;第55、56小题各2分,第57小题3分,第58小题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据内容要求回答问题。
In the mornings, as I walked from the train station to the office, I planned my day by making a to-do list in my head: the scientific articles I would read, the data sets I would analyze, and—most urgent of all—the insights into human nature that it was my job to discover.
Each evening, I went back to the station, again going through my mental checklist, but this time sizing up my performance against the expectations I'd set for myself that morning. Time and again, when comparing my to-do list with my got-done list, I felt disappointed because I had fallen short.
But one day, something very strange happened. During my trip home, without any conscious intent, my thoughts began to shift. Instead of feeling bad about my weaknesses, I said aloud very softly, "I'm a nice person. I'm a nice person. I'm a nice person."
By the time I boarded my train, I was done with my little chant—until the next day when I walked home. And again, after counting my failures, I found myself saying quietly, "I'm a nice person."
It turns out that there's a tactical term for this practice: values affirmation(肯定). And what it boils down to is recognizing and strengthening, the personal values you hold most dear.
When you affirm a core personal value, you shore up your sense of self-worth. You broaden your outlook: Instead of focusing on your shortfalls, you switch to a wider-angle view that includes your resources and opportunities. And the people who do this are happier, healthier, and more hopeful.
Over time, I made progress in my research and learned a lot about what makes successful people special, including this: Nobody has passion and determination unless what they do lines up with their values.
Try values affirmation for yourself and teach the practice to your students. Take a moment and think of a value you hold dear, whether it's kindness, creativity, or gratitude. Whatever it is, name it. And then say to yourself: Come what may, I know who I am. Your values are your foundation and your compass, too. Trust them, and they will lead you home.
55. How did the author feel when she compared her to-do list with her got-done list
