Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand _______ memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it’s organized (有条理的). When you put away a book – or memory – you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by making up new sentences with it. Even better, you can make up a short story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to create a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to memorize words. They make the meaning of the words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

A. they have memory problems B. they are too worried
C. they don’t like to study D. they don’t do it in a right way

A. what B. how C. where D. who
38. Which is TRUE about memory according to the passage
A. Short-term memory is not used often.
B. What we see goes into long-term memory first.
C. We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.
D. We will never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.
39. Which is one example of “thinking about the word in new ways” in Paragraph 3
A. Listening to some familiar stories.
B. Making up sentences with the word.
C. Talking with people that you know.
D. Drawing pictures of the word on paper.

A. language students’ problems in study
B. short-term and long-term memory

“No freedom summer holiday” has become a popular topic on Weibo, as parents begin spending much time and money planning their children’s holiday. It has been a similar topic these years, when “Having 30, 000 yuan a month cannot afford the summer holiday” also becomes popular online.
According to a survey, parents in big cities are ready to spend on their children’s education during the break.
“I feel much more stressed during the summer holiday than on normal school days since I need to plan different activities for my children. A study tour costs 35, 000 yuan for a kid and there are also classes which are necessary for kids,” said Chan Lee, a 40-year-old mother of two primary school children.
Sending children on overseas tours has also become an important part of the break. Almost everyone in Chan’s children’s classes has joined a summer study tour. They wanted to experience an overseas educational environment, culture, and language through meeting people, visiting famous universities and sightseeing.
Cheng Guowei, a manager of a study tour center based in Shanghai, said parents care about their children’s education. “Nearly 95% of our participants (参与者) are students, and most of them are primary and middle school kids. Yet this market is also very competitive (有竞争力的), as there are many similar centers targeting the parents,” he said.
Yin Jianli is a writer. She is interested in family and education topics. She said it was unnecessary to plan too many activities for children during the summer holidays. “Parents are not helping their children. They are just doing it to cut down their own worry,” she said. Many parents thought they could buy their children a better education, “But actually a summer holiday should be a time for rest and play, not study,” she said.

①These days, whether parents should hold children’s lucky money for the new year has been a hot topic. Do you think it’s a good idea that parents keep the money for their children Opinions on this are divided.
②Ma Lin: I think it is too difficult for young children to manage their money wisely as there are so many distractions (干扰) out there. With large amounts of money, they may be fooled or fall into the habit of wasting money. By trusting the money to their parents, not only will they pay attention to saving money, but they will also understand the best wishes behind the money and put it to better use.
③Li Mei: I think it is a better choice for parents to keep the lucky money. Children may spend money like water and waste money. Instead, lucky money kept by their parents will be well spent, as children need to think carefully before they ask for permission (允许) to use the money.
④Zhang Jie: According to the latest Civil Code (《民法典》), 8 years old is a dividing line. That means, children older than 8 have the right to deal with their own money and be responsible for their acts as well. Children should be trusted to manage their own money and learn lessons the hard way if necessary. With parents’ help, they can both learn to manage money and become independent early in life.
⑤Xie Xiaolei: In my opinion, children should keep their own lucky money because it’s a good chance to help them use money properly. In doing so, children will be able to learn how to save money and spend their money reasonably. And what all parents should do is to keep their kids’ spending in control and guiding them in time. Early money management education is an important lesson, which can help children take money seriously and spend it properly.
