A “bucket list” is a personal list of goals and activities someone wants to achieve before the end of his life. Fortunately, I’ve been able to check off many of mine, an achievement that many people I know never get the opportunity to do.
While most people don’t like to talk about mortality, the hard fact is that it will come eventually. After the loss of several loved ones, I decided to make my bucket list so that, when I reflect on my life, I’ll smile and know that I grabbed every chance at happiness that I could.
Some of the things on my bucket list that I’ve achieved — hiking the Plank Road in the Sky on Mount Huashan in China; diving off the highest platform of 15 meters (50 feet) into the sea at Ariel’s Point in Boracay; doing the world’s highest bungee jump at 233 meters off Macao Tower; octopus fishing in the Yellow Sea off South Korea and much more.
The top thing on my bucket list, however, is much more difficult to achieve. Being adopted from South Korea to the United States in 1976, I have been searching for my birth parents for the past several years. I can’t help but worry that they may be gone. But having this thing head my list urges me to keep trying and I’m planning to visit Seoul in October to continue the search.
When I’ve talked about my bucket list to others, some of the feedback I’ve received is that it seems “a bit morbid”. Like, if you have a list, you’re thinking about your death. But I’m still in my rosy years.
As you get older, the list may change. And that’s OK. Whether it includes visiting certain countries, getting in better physical shape, buying a particular thing or just spending more time with loved ones, there is no wrong way to do a bucket list. Your list can include short-term goals, once-in-a-lifetime experiences or just personal goals. It can give a boost to your motivation and force you to take breaks when you might not otherwise think of doing so.
24. Why did the author decide to make his bucket list
A. Because he was afraid of early death. B. Because he thought life was too hard.
C. Because he didn’t want to live to regret. D. Because he wanted to honor his loved ones.
25. Which of the following wishes has NOT been achieved according to the author
A. Diving at Ariel’s Point. B. Hiking on Mount Huashan.
C. Doing bungee off Macao Tower. D. Finding his biological parents.
26. What does the underlined word “morbid” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. sick B. acceptable C. necessary D. reliable
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. People should stick to their dreams and hopes.
B. It doesn’t make any sense to change the bucket list.
C. A bucket list can help us get motivated and relaxed.
D. Personal experiences shouldn’t be included in a bucket list.
C
We use a huge amount of single-use plastic each year — we buy one million plastic bottles each minute around the world. Plastic waste, a material that can take centuries or more to disappear, is causing great damage to the planet. However, plastic waste produced in many countries typically ends up in open, uncontrolled landfills, most of which finally enters the ocean either by wind or through waterways.
Now, Kazumi Mateo, a 29-year-old woman from Nairobi, Kenya, is dealing with this global crisis by recycling bags, containers, and other waste products into bricks used for construction projects. Before founding her company — Gjenge Makers, Mateo worked as an oil-industry engineer. After seeing plastic waste along Nairobi’s streets, she decided to quit her job and built a small lab, testing sand and plastic combinations Mateo managed to study in the materials lab at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she in the end developed a machine that produces the new bricks.
Made from a combination of plastic and sand, the bricks have a melting point higher than 350°C and can be used for a longer time than traditional bricks. Mateo and her team gain much of the raw product from factories and recyclers, and sometimes it’s free, which allows the company to reduce the price point on the product and make it more affordable for schools and homeowners.
“There is waste that recyclers cannot deal with anymore. That is what we get,” Mateo said. Her factory produces 1,500 bricks each day, made from a mix of different kinds of plastic. These are polyethylene used for milk bottles, sandwich bags, and ropes. But she does not work with polyethylene terephthalate or PET, commonly used for plastic bottles, which can be made into the same form easily again and again.
The plastic waste is mixed with sand, heated and then pressed into bricks, which are sold at different prices, depending on thickness and colour.
28. What does paragraph 1 mainly focus on
A. Our dependence on single-use plastics. B. The ways of finding single-use plastics.
C. The wide spread use of plastic products. D. Our irresponsible behavior in using plastics.
29. What caused Mateo to make the new bricks
A. Her job as an oil-industry engineer. B. Her determination to go to university.
C. Her awareness of plastic waste problems. D. Her research projects in the university lab.
30. What was Mateo’s bricks like compared to traditional bricks
A. They take less time to make. B. They bear much more weight.
C. They stay in good condition longer. D. They change their colors more easily.
31. What do we know about PET bottles
A. They are easy to recycle. B. They are difficult to deal with.
C. They are mixed with sand. D. They are difficult to deal with
D
To show empathy is to identify with another’s feelings. It is to emotionally put yourself in the place of another. The ability to empathize is directly dependent on your ability to feel your own feelings and identify them.
If you have never felt a certain feeling, it will be hard for you to understand how another person is feeling. If you have never put your hand in a flame, you will not know the pain of fire if you have not experienced jealousy, you will not understand its power. Reading about a feeling and intellectually knowing about it is very different than actually experiencing it for yourself.
Among those with an equal level of emotional intelligence, the person who has actually experienced the widest range and variety of feelings — the great depths of depression and the heights of fulfillment, for example — is the one who is most able to empathize. On the other hand, when we say that someone “can’t relate to” other people, it is likely because they haven’t experienced, or accepted many feelings of their own. Once you have felt discriminated against, for example, it is much easier to relate with someone else who has been discriminated against. Our innate emotional intelligence gives us the ability to quickly recall those instances and form associations when we encounter discrimination again. We then can use the “reliving” of those emotions to guide our thinking and actions. This is one of the ways nature slowly evolves towards a higher level of survival.
For this process to work, the first step is that we must be able to experience our own emotions. This means we must be open to them and not distract ourselves from them or try to numb ourselves from our feelings through drugs, alcohol, etc.
Next, we need to become aware of what we are actually feeling — to identify, and accept our feelings. Only then can we empathize with others. That is one reason why it is important to work on your own emotional awareness and sensitivity — in other words, to be “in touch with” your feelings.
32. How does the author explain the feelings of empathy
A. By giving examples. B. By providing data. C. By making comparison. D. By having classification.
33. Which statement may the author agree with
A. Low level of empathy leads to fewer varieties of feelings.
B. The deeper one’s feelings are, the more empathetic one is.
C. Empathy is a way we recently picked up for better survival.
D. Rich experiences of emotions may go with a high level of empathy.
34. What’s the purpose of the last two paragraphs
A. To call for true acceptance of one’s identity. B. To suggest a right understanding of empathy.
C. To advise a sincere attitude to one’s experiences. D. To recommend sensing and recognizing one’s emotions.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. How Empathy Unfolds B. Accept Your True Self
C. Why Is Empathy Important D. Be Open to Your Emotions

An Angel on a Snowy Night
The wind was blowing hard as I was driving down the twists and turns of the country road. I was eager to get home before dark, but there seemed no way. The forecast said there was going to be a heavy snow on the way. It was freezing cold outside. The wind was blowing against the windows, letting out buzzing noises. Half standing on end, I stepped hard on the accelerator, longing to make it to my home earlier.
The car was racing along the rough road when I suddenly heard a big bang coming from behind. The car somehow slowed down, and I managed to pull it over to the side of the road. I was extremely frightened, wondering what had just happened. Dragging myself out of the driver’s seat, I shook with cold. Suddenly, a gust of cold wind cleared my head. Quickly I examined the car. Much to my surprise, no serious damage was done. It was just a flat tire, but the car couldn’t move forward an inch!
It was black dark outside. There was not a single one around to turn to. A wave of fear immediately washed over me. Worse still, it began to snow at the very moment. Snowflakes were dancing in the air under the control of fierce wind. How I wished someone could come to my rescue just in time! With nowhere to hide, I had to wait in the darkness, cold and helpless.
I waited and waited, but no car or truck passed by. I almost went mad. “What if no one comes What should I do ” I mumbled. At this point, I was totally consumed by anxiety and fear. My patience was running out when loud noises thundered out from the dark night. There came a Ford pickup, with bright car light thrown over the white snow. I jumped to my feet, waving my arms crazily.

(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The pickup finally stopped, and out stepped the driver.

第一节(满分 15 分)(One possible version)
Dear Jack,
How is everything going I’m excited that we are to work together on a research project during the upcoming holidays.
After giving it some thought, I would like to propose a project that explores the influence of idols on the growth of high school students. That’s because idols, ranging from celebrities to common people, often serve as role models and have a profound impact on teenager’s values and behaviors. Our plan will involve surveying peers, analyzing data, and perhaps interviewing educators to gain deeper insights.
Would this be something you’re interested in Please let me know your thoughts at your earliest convenience.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分 25 分)(One possible version)
The pickup finally stopped, and out stepped the driver. “What’s up young man!” asked the driver. “I have a flat tire.” I responded. The driver then knelt on his knee and took a close look at the broken tire. “Nothing serious, I’ll help replace the tire.” Hearing his words, I breathed a sigh of relief. A wave of warmth soon washed through my heart. The driver immediately took out some tools and set to work. Just within minutes, the spare tire was installed in place. Deeply touched by the driver’s selfless help, I grabbed his arm, trying to stuff some cash into his hand.
The driver drew back and refused to take the money. In no time, he stepped onto the pickup and soon disappeared into the dark night, leaving me greatly shocked. An accident turned out to be a blessing when a stranger approached me like an angel. Many years have passed, but the driver’s kind gesture still sticks in my head. It was his generous help that drove away cold, bringing me warmth on that snowy night. Even though I don’t know his name, his act of kindness makes a great difference to me, always inspiring me to reach out to those in need.

Text 1
M: It seems to be raining. I came out without a coat. The only thing that I can use to keep the rain off will be the newspaper.
W: Luckily, I brought my umbrella — and there’s a spare one in my bag that you can use.
Text 2
M: You could have easily come first in today’s race. In fact, you could have got your best race time ever. But you knew some things are more important. I’m proud of you.
W: Well, thanks, Mr. Chao. I couldn’t just leave my classmate there when she was hurt.
Text 3
W: We need to be in Germany by Tuesday, otherwise we’ll miss the meeting.
M: Well, we’re in England, and we have several choices. Fly there, or take the ferry to the Netherlands and then change to the train.
Text 4
W: It’s hard to study for the quiz.
M: I have examples of questions that were asked in the quizzes in the past. A list like that will give you a general idea of what to expect.
Text 5
M: Oh, hi, Laura. What are you doing here
W: Er, I’m buying a bicycle for my bicycle race next weekend. What about you
M: Well, I’m here looking for a bike too. Now the weather is warming up. I thought I’d get some exercise instead of taking the bus all the time.
Text 6
W: Jack, congratulations on getting such a good job.
M: Thanks. But actually I’m tired now. In order to pass the interview, I’ve worked day and night for a whole week. It’s rather challenging to stand out in 100 applicants.
W: But it’s all worth it. The job offers a high salary as well as a good future. The most important thing is that you can do what you like.
M: Yeah. Since I graduated from university, I’ve been keeping looking for a job as a bridge designer.
W: I know. You are so crazy about bridges that every weekend you will go out to appreciate the beauty of them. By the way, will you start your new job next Monday
M: Yes. I’m excited now.
Text 7
M: What a great gallery! It was a tiring journey, but now I feel refreshed here. I am glad to see these paintings in person.
W: Let’s go to the Impressionist section. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
M: I’d like to start with the abstract art, because that’s the kind of art I do for a living.
W: OK, we’ll do that. After that, we can enjoy the Impressionist paintings, and then the Cubist paintings.
M: Sounds great. Oh, look at this. I can’t believe I am standing face to face with such a famous work of art. How much do you think it is worth
W: When it was first painted a century ago, the artist struggled to sell it. He sold it for only a few dollars in the end. Even 50 years ago, it was only valued at a few thousand dollars.
M: I bet it would be worth a few million dollars now.
W: You are right.
Text 8

W: Uh, somewhere around $200 a month.
M: Hmm. And anything else
W: Yeah, I need a parking space.
M: Well, I know there’s an apartment building around the corner near my place. I’ll drop by on my way to class today.
W: Hey, thanks a lot.

Text 9
M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.
W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise.
M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn’t really help our motivation much.
W: Don’t be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn’t have to be that demanding. Jacob Sattelmair, from Harvard University, has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.
M: Hmm…interesting.
W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes’ exercise a week had a 20% lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well too, lowering their death risk by 14%.
M: And what about the people who exercise 60 minutes as much as what I probably do Does that help
W: Of course.
Text 10
W: Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico, which is a long way from shore. A team of researchers were trying to learn more about the fish and other creatures that live in this part of the sea. And we spent three days on a boat. The team used a piece of underwater equipment to measure water depth and temperature. The equipment also had a camera that sent images back to the boat. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite scared — mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid any longer. It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around. Everyone in the team was friendly. The experience was like having a holiday and it will help me work harder to become a scientist.
