I’m an 18-year-old pre-medical student, tall and good-looking, with two short story books and quite a number of essays to my credit. Why am I singing such praises of myself Just to explain that the attainment of self-pride comes from a great deal of self-love, and to attain it, one must first learn to accept oneself as one is. That was where my struggle began.
Born and raised in Africa, I had always taken my African origin as a burden. My self-dislike was further fueled when my family had to relocate to Norway, where I attended a high pared to all the white girls around me, with their golden hair and delicate lips, I, a black girl, had curly hair and full, red lips. My nose often had a thin sheet of sweat on it, whatever the weather was. I just wanted to bury myself in my shell crying “I’m so different!”
What also contributed to my self-dislike was my occasional stuttering (口吃), which had weakened my self-confidence. It always stood between me and any fine opportunity. I’d taken it as an excuse to avoid any public speaking sessions, and unknowingly let it rule over me.
Fortunately, as I grew older, there came a turning point. One day a white girl caught my eye on the school bus when she suddenly turned back. To my astonishment, she had a thin sheet of sweat on her nose too, and it was in November! “Wow,” I whispered to myself, “this isn’t a genetic (遗传的) disorder after all. It’s perfectly normal.” Days later, my life took another twist (转折). Searching the internet for stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such famous people as Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also stuttered. I was greatly relieved and then an idea suddenly hit me — if I’m smart, I shouldn’t allow my stuttering to stand between me and my success.
Another boost to my self-confidence came days later as I was watching the news about Oprah Winfrey, the famous talk show host and writer — she’s black too! Whenever I think of her story and my former dislike of my color, I’m practically filled with shame.
Today, I’ve grown to accept what I am with pride; it simply gives me a feeling of uniqueness. The idea of self-love has taken on a whole new meaning for me: there’s always something fantastic about us, and what we need to do is learn to appreciate it.
4. What affected the author’s adjustment to her school life in Norway
A. Her appearance. B. Social discrimination.
C. Her changing emotions. D. The climate in Norway.
5. How did the author feel on noticing the similarity between her and the girl on the bus
A. Blessed and proud. B. Confused and afraid.
C. Amazed and relieved. D. Shocked and ashamed.
6. What lesson did the author learn from the cases of Newton and Churchill
A. Great minds speak alike.
B. Stuttering is no barrier to success.
C. Wisdom counts more than hard work.
D. Famous people can’t live with their weaknesses.
7. What can best summarize the message contained in the passage
A. Pride comes before a fall.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. Self-acceptance is based on the love for oneself.
D. Self-love is key to the attainment of self-pride.
C
A lot of people ask this question: "Why is body language so important " Studies have shown that in the process of communication, non-verbal expression has 65% to 93% more influence than actual text. This means that "how to say" is more important than "what to say". Of course, this does not mean that you don't need to do preparation for your interviews, nor does it mean that you can take any short cuts. On the contrary, this means that you have more things to pay attention to and prepare for.
In the real workplace, body language is much more important than you think. Without proper body language, you may find yourself trapped in a circle where you can't integrate with the external environment, not to mention the difficulties in the absence of body language in the workplace.
"People can often make inferences from actions, and the results of these inferences directly affect lives: for example. who will be employed and who will be promoted."Academician Amy Cuddy said in a TV talk show. She also said that "our body language will also affect our perception ( 感知, 看法)of ourselves. When you try to make more authoritative actions, your brain will inadvertently(不经意地)receive signals and actually create an idea that you are more authoritative, so that you have more confidence in yourself".
Therefore, before interviews or important meetings, try not to lean on any object or have a hunched back. Instead, you should try to keep your body relaxed. You can even stand with a relatively authoritative posture (姿势) -of course, you may need to do these things in the bathroom or places where no one could see you.
Body language plays a crucial role in your job interviews, careers, and everyday life. Paying attention to body language could make strong impacts on your behavior, which could help you achieve better results. So, every time you are nervous or feel that you can't do it, stretch your body, smile, and tell yourself "Fake it till you become it!"
8. What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us
A. What we say in a conversation is not so important.
B. Practicing body language is a short cut to success.
C. We should attach great importance to body language.
D. Body language carries 93% of conversation messages.
9. According to Amy Cuddy, why is body language important for us
A. It decides whether we are promoted.
B. It influences people's impression of us.
C It makes us look more authoritative.
D. It helps people understand who we are.
10. What does the underlined word "hunched" possibly mean
A. Broken down. B. Tied behind.
C. Bent forward. D. Straightened up.
11. Who might be the intended readers of the passage
A. New arrivals in the workplace.
B. Body language researchers.
C. Working adults to be promoted.
D. Viewers of a TV talk show.

A new study reveals that pigeons (鸽子) can tackle some problems just like artificial intelligence, enabling them to solve difficult tasks that might challenge humans. Previous research has theorized that pigeons employ a problem-solving strategy, involving a trial-and-error approach, which is similar to the approach used in AI models but differs from humans’ reliance on selective attention and rule use. To examine it, Brandon Turner, a psychology professor at the Ohio State University, and his colleagues conducted the new study.
In the study, the pigeons were presented with various visual images, including lines of different widths and angles, and different types of rings. The pigeons had to peck (啄) a button on the right or left to indicate the category to which the image belonged. If they got it correct, they received food; if they were wrong, they received nothing. Results showed that, through trial and error, the pigeons improved their accuracy in categorization tasks, increasing their correct choices from about 55% to 95%.
Researchers believed pigeons used associative learning, which is linking two phenomena with each other. For example, it is easy to understand the link between “water” and “wet”. “Associative learning is frequently assumed to be far too primitive to explain complex visual categorization like what we saw the pigeons do,” Turner said. But that’s exactly what the researchers found.
The researchers’ AI model tackled the same tasks using just the two simple mechanisms that pigeons were assumed to use: associative learning and error correction. And, like the pigeons, the AI model learned to make the right predictions to significantly increase the number of correct answers. For humans, the challenge when given tasks like those given to pigeons is that they would try to come up with rules that could make the task easier. But in this case, there were no rules, which upsets humans.
What’s interesting, though, is that pigeons use this method of learning that is very similar to AI designed by humans, Turner said. “We celebrate how smart we are that we designed artificial intelligence: at the same time, we regard pigeons as not clever animals,” he said.
12. What is the purpose of the new study
A. To test a theory. B. To evaluate a model.
C. To apply a strategy. D. To involve an approach.
13. What were the pigeons expected to do in the experiment
A. Draw circles. B. Correct errors.
C. Copy gestures. D. Identify images.
14. What do pigeons and AI have in common according to the study
A. They are of equal intelligence.
B. They create rules to make tasks easier.
C. They respond rapidly to orders from humans.
D. They employ simple ways to get things done.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Pigeons’ trial-and-error method is revealed B. Pigeons outperform humans in tough tasks
C. “Not smart” pigeons may be as smart as AI D. AI models after pigeons’ learning approach

Lily was a high school student who loved comparing herself with others. She always cared about the latest clothes, expensive phones, and designer bags. Whenever someone showed off a new item, she would feel jealous (嫉妒的) and want to buy something better. Her parents often told her, “True value isn’t in what you own,” but she never listened.
One day, Lily noticed a girl from another class, whose name was Coco. Coco’s family was wealthy, but she always wore simple clothes and carried an old schoolbag. Unlike Lily, Coco never joined in the students’ discussions about brands or prices. Instead, she spent her time helping classmates with math problems or volunteering in the school library. Her grades were always at the top of the class, and everyone respected (尊重) her.
Lily couldn’t understand why Coco didn’t care about material things. One afternoon, Lily saw Coco sitting alone under a tree, reading a book. She decided to talk to her. “Why don’t you buy nicer things ” Lily asked. “Your family has enough money.” Coco looked up with a smile. “I’d rather spend money on things that matter,” she said. “Like helping others or buying books.”
That night, Lily thought about Coco’s words. She realized that she had been looking for things that didn’t bring real happiness. The next day, she made a decision: she would stop comparing herself with others and start focusing on what truly mattered.

The person who influences me most
Many people do have a great influence on me
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Many people do have a great influence on me, but I think no one can be compared with my mother. Her attitude towards life will never stop influencing my thoughts and actions. It is my mother who teaches me to be curious, kind, optimistic and persistent.
Working as a government official, she doesn’t appear to be extraordinary in any way, but just works faithfully and devotedly; at the same time, she never puts her family aside. Today, when I come across someone in need, I’m willing to give a helping hand within my ability; when I see something odd or unfamiliar, I am eager to find out what it is; when I encounter difficulties in life, I always have a positive attitude and constantly seek for approaches to addressing them.
She is not only my mother, but also my life mentor. Nothing that I learned from my mother has ever left me. Indeed, she is just the person affecting me greatly.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。

【答案】 The following week, Lily began to learn from Coco. She stopped begging her parents for expensive items and instead used her pocket money to buy a few second-hand books, which she shared with classmates who couldn’t afford new ones. When she saw someone struggling with homework, she would sit down patiently and help, just like Coco did. During lunch breaks, instead of talking about brand-new sneakers or phones, she joined Coco in the library, organizing books and helping younger students find what they needed. At first, she felt a little shy, but seeing the smiles on others’ faces warmed her heart.
Months later, teachers and classmates all praised Lily. Her grades had jumped from average to top 10, and she organized a weekly study group that helped half the class improve. At the school’s volunteer day, she led a team to clean the community park, laughing as she picked up litter with classmates. “Lily’s heart is as bright as her smile now,” her math teacher said in class. Her parents, seeing her donate old clothes to charity, hugged her tightly. Lily finally understood: true value lies not in what you have, but in what you give.
