When I was a teenage boy, I helped out at my parents’ furniture store in a charming New England town. The store was known for its wide range of products. One summer holiday, I was busy assisting customers to find what they needed. I always greeted them warmly at the entrance, and customers appreciated it as excellent service. I also assisted them to carry heavy things to their cars, but my parents strictly instructed me not to accept tips or anything else.
One day, an elderly lady visited the store. At first sight, I was drawn to her. She was neatly(整洁地) dressed and had a graceful presence, looking polite and friendly. She lived in a senior citizen apartment nearby and wanted to buy some chairs for her garden. After a short search, I found some chairs that met her needs. She bought two chairs and asked if I could help send them to her home just a stone’s throw away. Recognizing her old age, I agreed and carried the chairs to her building.
Upon arrival, she welcomed me warmly and showed me where to place the chairs. Before I could thank her for shopping in my parents’ store, she shocked me by placing a handful of candy in my hand. Then, to my amazement, she gave me an educational book. I politely rejected it, explaining that I couldn’t accept any presents. However, she put the book in my hand and said with a smile, “If your parents don’t want you to have this, just don’t tell them. Let me tell them instead.” We both laughed, and I thanked her sincerely. I decided to follow her advice, and she told my parents that she had given me a book as a reward for my hard work. With the book, I learned a lot and started my lifelong love for reading.
Reflecting on this experience, I often think of the elderly lady and hope she will live a joyful life surrounded by loved ones forever. Her generosity and humor have left a lasting impression on me.

Fifty-five public schools in New York City have recently invited furry friends to their classrooms. The Comfort Dog Program has been around for five years.
Comfort dogs have been found to augment levels of oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine in our brains, hormones (激素) promoting positive feelings and a happy mood (心情). But how are these pets helpful in the classroom
For some students, the comfort pet provides the emotional support they need, which then allows the children to be engaged and successful in their studies. A struggling student can hold the pet in the arms and get the support he or she needs at the time, which also develops their self-awareness and ability to regulate their emotions. In other cases, teachers use the pet as part of the lesson. Meredith Loftus, a teacher in New York, brought a dog named Chip to help out with a phonies game in the classroom.
Dog training isn’t necessarily a walk in the park, although it can definitely include that. It takes time, effort and consistency to train pets, and this is the case for this program, too.
To be a part of the program, an educator and their dog must participate in a six-hour training session by The Good Dog Foundation. This training teaches the educator what to do if students are scared of pets. It also trains dogs on the differences they’ll experience in a school environment, such as the school bell, fire alarms, loud announcements and other possible distractions. The dog is also trained at being friendly with strangers and the handler, in this case the educator, who needs to be very in tune with the pet and know how to look out for its stress signals.
The program has been a genuine success so far, and a helpful addition to the education and well-being of many students in New York. In fact, hundreds of other schools have expressed their interest in joining the program and may be including it in their curriculum in the near future.
28. The underlined word “augment” in paragraph 2 most probably means “______”.
A. reach B. increase C. balance D. stabilize
29. According to paragraph 3, the comfort pet can help students ______.
A. develop in an all-round way B. become more supportive
C. succeed academically D. have richer feelings
30. What can an educator learn during the six-hour training session
A. How to be friendly with dogs. B. How to keep dogs away from stress.
C. How to adapt to a school environment.
D. How to respond to students’ fear of pets.
31. What can be known about The Comfort Dog Program from the last paragraph
A. It’s still on trial in New York. B. It’s part of New York curriculum.
C. It’s promoted across New York. D. It’s gaining greater popularity.
D
Astronauts on the International Space Station will soon test a new oven for making chocolate chip cookies. A spaceship carrying the cooking equipment and other supplies was launched on Saturday from the Wallops Flight Facility in the United States. The shipment, weighing 3,700 kilograms, reached the space station on Monday. The goal is to explore the possibility of making freshly baked cookies for space travelers.
American company Nanoracks designed and built the oven and helped with organizing the flight to the space station. Hilton DoubleTree hotels supplied the cookie dough (生面团)the astronauts will use.
In the past, space station crews have created their own pizzas using a thin, flat piece of bread known as flatbread. Astronauts have tried other creative ways to make food, such as creating salads from vegetables grown in the space station. Results have been mixed.
The cookie baking will be a slow process. The oven can heat just one cookie at a time. The test could take weeks before the astronauts have chance to try out freshly baked cookies.
Five unbaked cookies have been in a space station freezer for several weeks. Each is in its own individual clear bag made out of silicone (硅胶). The oven can heat foods to temperatures as high as 177 degrees Celsius. That is twice the temperature of the U.S. and Russian food warmers on the space station. The oven uses electric heating elements.
Mary Murphy is with Nanoracks. Murphy says she expects a baking time of 15 to 20 minutes for each cookie when the oven is heated to about 163 degrees Celsius. She adds that the smell of baking cookies should fill the space station each time a cookie comes out of the oven.
The oven’s first use will be the real test. Without the force of gravity, the astronauts do not know exactly how the cookie will look. Three of the space-baked cookies are to be returned to Earth for testing.
32. Which of the following can best describe the new oven test
A. Meaningless. B. Energy-saving.
C. Time-consuming. D. Successful.
33. What’s the advantage of the new oven over the Russian food warmer
A. It heats up much faster. B. It can heat up to a higher temperature.
C. It has a larger cooking space. D. It’s more convenient to use.
34. What will make the cookie’s appearance in the new oven uncertain
A. The baking time. B. The absence of gravity.
C. The heating method. D. The speed of temperature rise.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Cooking Equipment in Space Station
B. Cookies Coming from the International Space Station
C. A New Oven to Be Tested to Make Cookies in Space Station
D. Creative Ways Astronauts Make Food in Space Station

A Few Tips for Self-acceptance
We all want it to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. 36 Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
Stop comparing yourself with others. 37 Why do you follow them Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs Know that your life is your own; you are the only you in this world.
____38____ We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. Remember, you are only human. You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate (有同情心的) response “That didn’t go as planned. But, I tried my best.”
Recognize all of your strengths. Write them down in a journal. Begin to train your brain to look at strengths before weaknesses. List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today. 39
Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your weaknesses. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. 40 Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how fantastic you are.
A. Others’ encouragement can contribute to your self-acceptance.
B. Without self-acceptance, you won’t have enough strengths to face the challenges.
C. Where do you start
D. Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made.
E. Feeling upset again
F. Do not follow the people who make you feel not good enough.
G. Nothing is too small to celebrate.

It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling down. In the cold and the darkness, a poor boy was selling goods door to door. He wanted to make some money to pay for his school in the coming new term. He was walking helplessly on the road when he found that he had only one dime (一角钱) left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
Lights were shining from every window. Every house must have a family getting together to enjoy a big dinner happily. He was afraid that he would disturb their warm moment. But he was extremely hungry. With his heart beating fast, he slowly put his hand on the door. It was the first time that he had begged for something. He lost his courage when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he just asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him some milk and bread. He swallowed them down in a flash, and then asked, “How much do I have to pay you ”
“You don’t need to give me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Thank you, and I will never forget about your kindness.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in life. No one knew that he was about to give up and quit before this point.
Years later, the woman became seriously ill. The local doctors could not figure out a proper treatment. They had no option but to send her to the big city, where specialists could be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now a famous expert in this field, was having an urgent meeting with his colleagues in the consultation room (咨询室), listening carefully to the report of her condition.

As smartphone addiction becomes a growing concern, it is crucial to recognize its negative impacts. Excessive phone use not only harms physical health, but also affects academic performance and reduces face-to-face social interactions. Therefore, I am writing to call on everyone to get rid of smartphone addiction.
To begin with, students can set daily screen-time limits and disable unnecessary notifications to minimize distractions. Additionally, participating in offline activities like sports, reading, or club events can help reduce reliance on phones. Moreover, peer support plays a vital role — students should kindly remind each other to stay focused and maintain a balanced lifestyle.
Let us work together to create a campus environment where technology serves as a tool for growth rather than a barrier to our potential.
第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
One possible version:
When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. His memory came flooding back to the cold evening and the warm face. “Would it be her ” he thought. Curious to know the answer, he found himself standing outside the patient’s room. Through the window of the door, he saw the face he would never forget. Silently, he turned around and was determined to do whatever he could to save her life. After a long struggle, her health was picking up day by day.
She didn’t know Dr. Kelly had paid her bill in hospital and this morning an envelope with the bill and a note came to her. She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay off the bill. Taking a deep breath, she opened it with trembling hands, and the handwritten words on the note caught her attention first, which read,“Paid in full with the milk and bread, from Dr. Howard Kelly”. She was thinking hard to figure out the meaning of the words when Howard pushed the door open. He explained everything. With tears rolling down her face, she said,“Thank You!”
