Having spent more than a decade on the dance floor, ROME——Niccolo Filippi, a 23-year-old Italian dance performer, recently decided to explore Chinese culture and its traditional dance forms and believes that this experience will not only boost his career, but also broaden his horizons beyond the world of dance.
His interest in diversifying his skills grew after he stumbled upon a short video of traditional Chinese-styled dance on YouTube. "I saw it as an art that combines tradition and modernity, which was mostly the reason why I liked it," says Filippi.
Ever since, he has been closely following Chinese dance performers and watching numerous videos to learn more about the traditional style that he admires. "I prefer the traditional style because of its light movements. It also reflects my personality with elegance," he adds.
Filippi' s chance came when he was invited to perform for a Chinese New Year celebration in the central Italian city of Florence. He has since fully committed himself to the art form, learning several pieces and putting his newfound passion into practice.
"The biggest difference that I found (compared to other disciplines) is the change of mood and emotional expressions among dances," says Filippi, adding that he needed to shift from the dynamic moves of hip-hop to the graceful and fluid movements of Chinese dance. Despite various obstacles, Filippi' s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Two of his friends shared videos of his performances on social media, and the response was overwhelming. One video garnered 500,000 views, while the other received 200,000 views.
Filippi believes that learning about different cultures is priceless, and he sees it as a means of personal growth. "I like to think of a person as a book," he says. "Embracing different traditions and cultures, such as Chinese culture and many others, is like adding new chapters to my book, making it more diverse and wonderful."
4. What is the main reason why Filippi falls in love with traditional Chinese dance
A. Its potential to boost his career. B. Its mix of traditional and modern elements.
C. Its graceful and light movements. D. Its true reflection of his elegant personality.
5. How does the author illustrate the popularity of Filippi' s videos
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving an example.
C. By sharing a story. D. By making a comparison.
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Filippi thinks little of learning from other cultures.
B. People prefer to write down their past experiences.
C. Accepting various cultures boosts personal growth.
D. A book with chapters on traditions is more wonderful.
7. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Chinese-styled dance videos go viral on social media.
B. An Italian's dance journey towards specialization starts.
C. Filippi's desire for Chinese culture extends beyond dance.
D. An Italian dancer shows passion for Chinese-styled dance.

"Big Tree," an old southern live oak, sits in a park just outside Orlando's business district. It's been struck by lightning at least three times and has survived many hurricanes—and it grew from a seed around the same time Juan Ponce de León's ship first landed on Florida's eastern coast.
Over 400 years old, the tree is so impressive that members of a Michigan-based nonprofit flew to Orlando in February to climb the tree and cut branches and leaves. The researchers are now in the midst of the process to grow new roots from the cuttings. The reason: to cl one the historic tree, store its DNA and plant potentially thousands of cloned trees across the Southeast.
In order to clone an ancient tree, researchers must climb it to find a piece of live tissue(细胞组织)。 The freshly cut branches and leaves are taken to the group's lab in Michigan, where, in climate-controlled rooms, researchers work to promote growth from the cuttings.
The most common method is by rooted cuttings. In this method, a tip of a tree' s branch is dipped(蘸) into hormones, placed into a foam plug(泡沫塞)and set inside a mist room. Then, the waiting begins. A sign of life can take several months to a year to show, if one comes at all. In another method called tissue culture, researchers take a quarter-inch of branch, dip it into a mixture made up of a dozen hormones and other chemicals, seal(密封)it in a container and wait to see whether it will grow roots.
Experts lauded the group for its creative methods and reproduction in large numbers, but they doubt whether the clones will grow as the originals do. Scott Merkle, a professor of forest biology at the University of Georgia, said, "There are so many variables that there's no certainty that they will be able to survive and perform better than other trees that you plant on the same land". He added that the age of historic trees makes them difficult to study. "I think it's a great thing that they' re doing. I just don't know how realistic it is."
8. According to the passage, what do the researchers aim to do
A. To plant thousands of trees across the Southeast.
B. To study the reason for the survival of "Big Tree".
C. To preserve old trees' DNA for future generations.
D. To clone an ancient tree from its original branches.
9. What do we know about the two methods mentioned in paragraph 4
A. Tissue culture is the most frequently used method.
B. There is a chance that the branch will fail to grow roots.
C. In the first method, the live tissue is sealed in a container.
D. A mixture of hormones and other chemicals is needed in both methods.
10. What does the underlined word "lauded" in paragraph 5 mean
A. Praised. B. Met. C. Joined. D. Contacted.
11. What's Scott Merkle's attitude to the group's work
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Cautious. D. Appreciative

My late mother was an artist of some renown in the Pacific Northwest. Over her many-decades career, her paintings evolved from highly representational watercolors into mixed-media abstracts. Growing up, I could draw a little myself and enjoyed doing so, but I never had her talent. Once, I asked her how I could improve. I supposed I expected her to say something like "Practice 10,000 hours." Instead, she told me to look at what I wanted to draw. I stared at a tree, noticing details I'd ignored before: the rough bark, shifting shadows, and delicate leaves. Drawing each detail carefully, I created my best work yet. More importantly, I discovered the joy of truly observing the world.
This act of deep attention is called savoring——a skill that enriches both art and life. Psychologists define it as "fully appreciating positive moments," like enjoying a sunset or reliving happy memories. Studies show savoring activates the brain's reward system, reduces sadness, and boosts happiness. In experiments, people who focused on daily positive experiences became happier, especially those with fewer good moments. Savoring also creates vivid, lasting memories of joy.
Yet humans naturally focus on negatives——a survival instinct(本能)from ancestors who needed to avoid dangers. Today, this "negativity bias(偏见)" often backfires, making us trapped in problems and overlook good moments. Scientists warn that constant negativity twists thinking and lowers life satisfaction.
The solution Practice savoring. Start with positive moments: stop to enjoy a meal or a friend's laugh. But challenges can also be savored. Try a "failure journal": write down a setback(挫折;阻碍)(e. g., an argument) , leave space, then return weeks later to note lessons learned("I improved communication"). Months later, add positive outcomes ("We grew closer"). This involves savoring——and shows how you can use the practice to transform even unwelcome experiences into positive opportunities for growth and perspective. This reframing helps find meaning in difficulties, much like finding beauty in an imperfect drawing.
My mother's advice wasn't just about art——it was about living. By observing deeply, we uncover hidden layers in both the ordinary and the difficult. Savoring turns fleeting moments into lasting joy and challenges into growth. That's the true art of life.
12. What does the author focus on by the personal story
A. Observing the world is essential for a painting. B. Every detail deserves attention when drawing.
C. Deep attention is a source of living a happy life. D. Savoring is a skill of observing the world.
13. What does the author imply about "negativity bias" in modern life
A. It is necessary for survival today. B. It reduces our ability to enjoy life.
C. It helps us avoid dangers effectively. D. It improves people's life satisfaction.
14. According to the text, what is a "failure journal" used for
A. Reflecting on setbacks to find positive results. B. Tracking mistakes to avoid errors in the future.
C. Recording positive moments and the emotions. D. Keeping track of the interpersonal relationship.
15. Why does the author compare "savoring" to "finding beauty in an imperfect drawing"
A. To explain that art involves accepting flaws.
B. To demonstrate challenges can be changed into growth.
C. To criticize people who focus on negativity.
D. To argue that art is more important than science.

Sally's birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled her heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and she had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by her friends. However, this year was different. The burden of too much homework and her parents' struggling business weighed heavily on her, forcing Sally to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event she enjoyed dearly every year.
One day, during break, her best friend, Jane, with a curious look in her eyes, approached. "Are you going to have a birthday party this year " Jane asked, sensing Sally's sadness.
"No," Sally sighed and replied sadly, "There's just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties."
She smiled weakly, trying to hide her great disappointment and stress, but Jane saw through her pretence(假装)easily. Jane nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Sally saw her talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious, Sally went over to them, but as soon as Jane saw her, she quickly walked away. Sally was shocked by Jane's strange actions and turned towards Sarah.
"What did she say " Sally asked.
However, Sarah simply shrugged(耸肩)and walked away with Jane, leaving Sally standing there, feeling left out and anxious.
"What is happening " Sally wondered anxiously, "Are they keeping something from me "
As Sally's birthday drew nearer, Jane was often found chatting softly with her other classmates. Whenever Sally went over to them, they would just walk away or tell her that they were talking about a secret which Sally was not allowed to know. "Jane has never kept secrets from me before." Sally thought. Her heart sank. Even her friends were distancing themselves from her! She swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, eagerly trying to figure out what was happening. Why were her friends distancing themselves from her And what were they hiding
