The Leaning Tower of Pisa was built over 199 years, from 1173 to 1372. Almost as soon as the construction was started, the Tower began to lean because the foundation was poorly designed. Over the years of construction, attempts were made to keep the Tower from leaning further and falling down. That is why the upper floors of the Tower are curved. Because of fears that the Tower would collapse, from 1990 to 2001 the Tower was strengthened and repaired.
Cultural Notes
Ravenna also has several leaning towers built in the 12th century.
Bologna has two leaning towers,
both built in 1119.
Venice has three towers
that lean.

An Ode To Yongde Earthforest
Translated by Gao Jianping
