A sky full of courage
Sam rushed into Mom’s study, excited. “Look at this!” He held up a bright blue tail feather. “It’s a Western Bluebird! I’ve been looking for this one for ages!”
Mom smiled, “It’s beautiful. Tomorrow, I get to fly a biplane over downtown Portland for the air show. Want to come with me ”
Sam felt nervous about flying, especially in an open cockpit (开放式座舱) biplane. “No, thanks, Mom. Sorry,” he said, ducking his head and heading upstairs. With each heavy step, he told himself that planes are safe and that he shouldn’t be afraid to fly, especially as the son of Portland’s best pilot.
Sam pulled out his feather book, eager to organize his collection. He opened his book to “W” and placed the new blue feather under “Western Bluebird.” The next page, “V-Vaux’s Swift (沃氏雨燕),” was empty. Every fall, groups of Vaux’s Swifts fly through Portland on their way south. But they hadn’t shown up this year, leaving people worried.
Then his friend Emily arrived and asked him to go to the Wildlife Care Center, where they volunteered. On their way, the air was smoky from wildfires. As they entered the room, Dr. Malone was holding a Vaux’s Swift with a broken wing. “It had been found off course at Matthews Valley, most likely confused by the wildfire smoke,” Dr. Malone told them. “And the flock (群) of swifts must be lost!” Sam was shocked and knew he had to act.
Suddenly an idea hit Sam. But his plan to find the swifts would work if only he had the courage to fly. That night, he lay in bed, holding the feather, repeating his wish: “I’m brave enough.”
The next morning, he nervously told his mom, “I’m flying with you today. But, after the air show, we have to keep going to Matthews Valley.” She was surprised but agreed.
After the show, Mom continued flying the red biplane to Matthews Valley, with Sam sitting behind her, holding a birdcage with the injured (受伤的) swift. “Matthews Valley is below us now,” Mom shouted. “You have to find those birds soon. We have just enough gas to get back.” Sam used binoculars (双筒望远镜) but saw nothing. He suggested they turn off the engine and fly slowly to hear better. Mom agreed, and the plane went silent.
Just then, Sam noticed a cloud of swifts high above. The injured swift called out, and the flock noticed it and quickly flew around the plane. More swifts joined, forming a group around them.
“Fly back home Mom!” Sam said. “Let’s see if they follow us.” Mom restarted the engine and headed back to Portland. The swifts followed, and Sam felt excited.
“You did it, Sam!” Mom said, laughing. Sam knew she meant more than just finding the birds. As they flew, Sam forgot his fear and felt like part of the flock. He held out his arms, lifted his head, and led the swifts home.

As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it influence a person watching them A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted.
The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.
How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food The team said they hope to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods.

The skill that I want to learn is gardening, because it allows me to be close to nature and learn about plants. When I watch the plants grow, I’ll learn to be patient and responsible. It’s also a good way to help cut down on stress and make me relaxed.
In order to learn gardening, I will start by planting easy-to-grown vegetables like tomatoes and lettuce. I will read gardening books and watch teaching videos online. My grandparents, who are experienced gardeners, will teach me how to take care of plants. We will get the ground ready, put in the plants, water them often and clear out wild grass.
If I make every effort to learn the skill well, I believe it will surely make my daily life more colorful.

Have you ever made a public speech Last week, I made a 5-minute public speech during a competition for the first time. At first, I was a little excited about it. My friends kept encouraging me to try, so I did it. But when I stoodin front of people, I was so nervous that my voice was shaking and I even forgot some words. After the speech, I was sad and told my mom I would never do it any more. Then, my mom told me that public speaking could make me pay more attention to difficult things and help me become braver. After hearing Mom’s words, I made up my mind to practice more to make sure I can be more confident in any situation.

This is the Air Museum information line. In the museum, you can see 140 old planes. It’s one of the biggest air museums in Europe. The museum is forty-eight miles from London. You can get there by car or by train. In summer, the museum is open every day from ten in the morning to seven in the afternoon. In winter, it closes earlier, at four o’clock. A ticket for grown-ups is 6 pounds, and for children and students, it’s 4 pounds. For families, there is a special ticket, which only costs 18 pounds. This year we have something special for visitors. You can go up in a small plane that was built in 1930 and enjoy the countryside from the air. You can only do this on Sundays and you should book this trip a week before.
