Welcome to the unit---Emergency or natural disaster
A Sandy is reading a newspaper. Decide which headlines are about emergencies (E) and which are about natural disasters (ND).
TIP: In newspaper headlines, the simple present tense is often used, and words like a, an, the and the verb be are often left out.
An emergency is a sudden, serious and dangerous event or situation. People need to act quickly to deal with it.
A natural disaster is a sudden and powerful event in nature, such as an earthquake or a flood.
1 Power cut leaves thousands without heating
2 Lightning starts big fire in office building
3 Earthquake makes thousands of people homeless
4 Coach comes off road and hits tree
5 Three men hurt in car accident
6 Flood washes away factory
7 Typhoon leaves whole town in terrible state
8 House fire traps five and firemen save the family
B Sandy and Millie are talking about emergencies and natural disasters. Work in pairs and talk about an emergency or a natural disaster you have heard about or experienced. Use the conversation below as a model.
TIP: We use "Oh, really " to express surprise, but pay attention to the tone, as the way we say it can give different meanings.
Sandy: Did you hear about the fog disaster in Star Town last week
Millie: No. What happened
Sandy: The fog was so thick that drivers couldn't see more than a metre in front of them.
Millie: Oh, really
Sandy: Yes. Many cars hit each other. It was one of the largest traffic accidents in the town's history!
Millie: Was anyone hurt
Sandy: Yes. Twelve people died, and over 40 were hurt in the accident.
Millie: That's terrible!
C In pairs, suggest a headline for each emergency or natural disaster you talked about in Part B.

Reading---The Highfield earthquake
There was an earthquake in Highfield in 2021 and Timmy survived. Sandy is reading his story. Before reading, think about the questions below.
1What may happen in an earthquake
2 What do you think people should do in an earthquake
The Highfield earthquake
It was about two o'clock in the afternoon. I was working when the earthquake started. At first, I felt a slight shake. Then I heard a loud noise like thunder.
Soon the real noise came, like bombs under the ground. The earth started to shake. People shouted in fear. Some ran out of the building. I tried my best to run out too.
Outside, people were running in all directions while pieces of glass and bricks were raining down. Then the walls began to come down too!
Finally, the noise and shaking ended. It was dark and silent around me. I couldn't see anything at all, and I didn't know if anyone else was around me. I felt nervous,

and my heart was beating really fast. “I'm trapped," I said to myself. A moment of fear went through my mind, but I told myself to calm down since I was still alive.
I shouted for help. I thought somebody could hear me, but no one came for a very long time. I knew I had to save energy and wait for help.
Hours later, as I was trying to find my way out, I suddenly heard some noise above me.
“Help! Please help! I'm here!" I cried out in a weak voice. Then I heard shouts from excited people. They quickly moved away the bricks. At last, I was safe!

Grammar---Past continuous tense
Read the conversation below and pay attention to the use of the past continuous tense.
Suzy: There was an accident near our school at 4:10 yesterday afternoon. It happened as we were going home from school.
Amy: I know. I saw it while I was riding my bike home. It was raining when the police arrived.
Suzy: I didn't see it. I hope no one was badly hurt.
Work out the rule!
We use the past continuous tense to talk about things that were happening at a particular time in the past. We form the past continuous tense like this: be(was/were)_+v-ing.
When, while and as can be used as conjunctions of time. They all mean “during the time that ...".
I was working when the earthquake started.
People were running in all directions while pieces of glass and bricks were raining down.
As I was trying to find my way out, I suddenly heard some noise above me.
When a shorter action happened at the same time as a longer action, we use the past continuous tense for the longer action and the simple past tense for the shorter action. When there are two long actions, we often use while.
We were watching in fear while the firemen were putting out the fire.
If the shorter action is in the main clause, we can use when, while or as to join the clauses.
When/While/As Millie was watching TV, lightning hit her building.
If the longer action is in the main clause, we often use when to join the clauses.
Millie was watching TV when lightning hit her building.
112
我们这样构成过去进行时:be(was/were) + v-ing。

D2 Here is the article by the Japanese student about his personal experience. Read the article.
A tidal wave
Introduce when and what happened.
I went to the beach with my friends last Saturday.
When we were playing on the beach, suddenly, the sea water started to go away. We heard people shouting. They were telling us to run away from the beach. A big wave was coming towards us. We ran up the hill as fast as possible. When I looked back, the whole beach and all the buildings below us were in water. Many boats were damaged.
Describe what people did after the emergency/disaster and their feelings.
After the tidal wave passed, the police checked to see if everyone was OK and warmed us to stay away from the beach for a few days. They told us that there was an earthquake a few kilometres away under the sea, and it caused the tidal wave. Luckily, no one was hurt or killed. All of us were happy that we were safe.

Stay safe
Have you ever thought about how to stay safe in natural disasters and emergencies Well, if you are in a flood, you should go outside and get to high ground, away from the water. However, if you are in a typhoon, you should go inside the nearest building. It is dangerous to be outside in the typhoon because you could get hit by something. In an earthquake, if you can't get out quickly, stay under a strong desk or table. And don't stand near a window as you could get hurt.
If you are in a building on fire, you should get out as soon as possible. To protect yourself from the thick smoke, you can cover your mouth and nose with a wet piece of cloth.
If you see a car accident, you should make an emergency call as soon as possible. Check if the people in the cars are OK, and don't move them if they are badly hurt. It is also helpful to place emergency signs around the cars to avoid another accident.

A tidal wave
I went to the beach with my friends last Saturday.
When we were playing on the beach, suddenly, the sea water started to go away. We heard people shouting. They were telling us to run away from the beach. A big wave was coming towards us. We ran up the hill as fast as possible. When I looked back, the whole beach and all the buildings below us were in water. Many boats were damaged.
After the tidal wave passed, the police checked to see if everyone was OK and warned us to stay away from the beach for a few days. They told us that there was an earthquake a few kilometres away under the sea, and it caused the tidal wave. Luckily, no one was hurt or killed. All of us were happy that we were safe.
