Exercise D Reading
I. Choose the best answer (阅读短文,选择最恰当的答案)
About half of New York City's yearly water supply travels through a system of underground tunnels. Once through these tunnels, the water becomes drinking water. However, one of these tunnels, the Delaware Aqueduct is leaking.
The Delaware Aqueduct stretches 85 miles (136.8 kilometres) long. It is the world's largest tunnel. Hundreds of millions of gallons flow through the enormous, aging tunnel every day. But there are cracks in the tunnel’ s walls. A large amount of water escapes through those cracks every day. This leaking is not only a waste of water but also creating problems above ground.
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYDEP) oversees the water supply. It has been aware of the leaks for decades. Until now, however, city officials have been hesitant to repair the tunnel. Repair work would mean closing parts of the tunnel. If the tunnel were closed, New York City would not have enough water. The city, therefore, did not want to take the tunnel out of service. A new tunnel is presently being built, which will provide more water. However, that project is not expected to be completed until a decade later.
Until that time, the city has begun dive work. This work is the first part of an early stage of testing. The testing will determine the best way to repair the tunnel. In mid-February, the city began sending divers 700 feet down to the tunnel to gather data. The data will be used to develop a repair plan. The project costs about $240 million. It will take five years to complete.
This first part of the project requires a team of six divers to live in a special chamber for three weeks. The divers spend one week getting used to the change in pressure at the 700-foot-below(213.4-metre-below) depth. They spend one week doing the necessary work and another week getting used to the pressure at ground level again. At that depth, the divers cannot breathe regular air. The air pressure has changed. Regular air is four-fifths nitrogen and one-fifth oxygen. However, divers are descending 700 feet below ground level. At that depth, nitrogen is too heavy for the lungs to breathe. So the divers are supplied with a mixture of oxygen and helium, a lighter gas.
The divers work in crews of three divers at a time. They work 12-hour shifts. Wearing wet suits and breathing tanks that contain the oxygen-helium blend, divers descend down a shaft that leads into the tunnel. Besides gathering data, they are measuring the space for machines that will later perform the much-needed repairs. New York City officials said that after the divers finish this part of the project, the next part will be to send the machines down the shaft.

The journey from stream to ocean begins in our backyards and farms. Precipitation comes down, exactly, everywhere —— in different forms. It may rain, hail, or snow. Whatever the form is, once it reaches the ground some water is 1 by trees and other plants.
Some water enters the groundwater supply by infiltration. Most water runs off the surface, down a hill and finally into a river. Ditches and small streams may be dry when it does not rain. They can quickly 2 with water when it rains.
Once the water finds its way into a stream or ditch, where does it go If you have ever studied a map in detail, you will notice how rivers and streams form a network of waterways across the countryside.
Little streams come together to form small rivers, which then join together and become medium-sized rivers. All these rivers may be branches of a large river, such as the Mississippi. Together, the network of rivers and streams forms a watershed, which drains the land of excess water.
This type of pattern is 3 in many places in nature. In the human circulatory system, for example, in human lungs, when you breathe out, your lungs behave just like a 4 . The air in your lungs(which is like the water in a watershed) starts in the smallest vessels(which are like small streams), passing into larger vessels (that are like medium rivers) and finally into one large central air passage (which is like a large river). In the end, all the air in the lungs (which are like a large watershed) passes through this one large air passage, out your mouth, and to the 5 beyond, just as water in a watershed flows out the mouth of a large river and into the ocean! (Of course, rivers don't 6 !)

A trending new addition to travel destinations around the world is freezing-yet-beautiful Alaska. The poles, the dancing lights, and the winter wonderlands have always attracted extreme travellers but this time, there is more than the magical draw of the 1 that is inviting people up towards the corners of the globe: climate change.
There's a strange form of climate anxiety, which is driving more people to places and sights that may 2 to exist in the coming years or decades. Alaska 3 the list of climate-tempted travel destinations. Last year over 2,000 people appeared on its lightly 4 snowy streets. The main 5 are polar bears, which are being forced into towns by a warming planet and the shrinking Arctic sea ice. All the heating is making it far easier for wildlife 6 and effortless bear selfies.
While bears have their charm, melting glaciers are a landscape in their own right. Some have been marked by the rate of melt for tourists to watch. As the landscape changes, tour companies have had to modify their regular routes —— some glaciers that had 7 by foot only a decade ago can now only be reached by helicopter.

In November 2007, a ship bound for South Korea struck a tower supporting the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. More than 53,000 gallons of oil were released into the San Francisco Bay. Then t 1 carried the engine fuel into the Pacific Ocean. The accident was the region's worst oil spill in many years. More than 50 beach areas had to close.
One biologist said it was the kind of event that can “push a species into extinction”. This was not the case. But the oil spill greatly harmed area wildlife, including birds and fish. It also d 2 the area's fishing industry for several years.
Environmentalists scrambled to save the bay's wildlife. Michael Ziccardi is the director of a wildlife care group. He said that more than 1,000 oil-soaked birds were taken to a treatment centre. Most of the birds were sea ducks called surf scoters. They live on the water's surface. Ziccardi explained that the oil seeps into the birds’ skin. This makes them unable to control their body temperature. It also forces them to move onto land, where they are at r 3 of starving. Fish, particularly Pacific herring, were also severely affected. The spill happened a month b 4 the start of their spawning season. That's when herring return from the ocean to the bay to lay their eggs. Scientists figure that 14 to 29 percent of the herring spawned that season was lost due to the oil spill. And almost no herring hatched in these areas. As a result, the bay's herring population from 2008 to2009 was the l 5 ever recorded.
The ship's pilot pled guilty to carelessness. The companies that owned and operated the ship were fined. They had to pay more than $44 million. Most of the money was used for three p 6 It helped restore areas affected by the spill. It improved wildlife habitats. And it upgraded recreational spaces around the bay.

Water is the natural resource that is both cheap and essential to us. We have been recklessly wasting it and that has led to a reduction in underground water level. Sounds scary, right Luckily, there' re some simple ways to save water at home. Firstly, only run the dishwasher when it's fully loaded. While doing dishes with hands, avoid running water. Firstly scrub and then wash the dishes. When you do your handwash, turn off the tap while you are using the soap. You can recycle greywater for reuse in toilet flushing or watering plants.

How can greywater help to save water at home
Greywater, a secret hero in home water conservation, is the slightly used water from sinks, showers or laundry. Though it is not drinkable, it is perfect for reuse and easy to repurpose.
In our homes, we can save greywater in simple ways. For example, we can place a bucket in the shower to catch extra water, scoop up the water from the bathtub before we drain the tub and collect leftover water from washing hands. This “recycled” water becomes a treasure for watering plants(make sure there is no soap or shampoo in it), flushing toilets and even washing our bikes or cars. My mum uses it to mop the floor — it cleans well and saves fresh water!
Greywater shows us that every drop counts, every action matters and every idea helps! With just a little creativity, we can turn everyday waste into a powerful tool for protecting our planet.
