The students at Southside School are thinking about the question: should the school have a new sport program or start a vegetable garden
Liz, Grade 8:
A sport program is better than gardening. How can we win at the sports meeting without good training We need experts to teach us how to throw and do the high jump.
Many kids say they aren’t interested in matches, but that’s because they’ve never won. If they get better training and start winning, they will change their minds.
People always stay kids don’t exercise enough. Just because gardening is outdoors doesn’t mean it’s real exercise. So I don’t think it helps much.
Sports are better for health, and many kids can play at the same time. I don’t think a garden has enough work for everyone. In fact, I think a garden is a bad idea.

Many kids around here don’t have gardens. They can’t grow things even if they want to. If you want to do more sports, you can always join a club.
Also, think about this: What helps you be good at sports You need to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. If we learn to cook what we grow, the garden will keep us healthy and make us better at sports.

A story from 2,000 years ago is now on the football field in Jiangsu! The famous “Chu-Han Contention” (楚汉之争) is back!
This is happening in the Jiangsu Football City League. People also called it the “Su Super League” or “Su Chao”. It is an official game. Teams from 13 cities in Jiangsu play against each other.
One of the most exciting matches is between Suqian and Xuzhou. Many people online call the game the “Chu-Han Contention” on the football field.
This name comes from old Chinese history. A long time ago, after the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) ended, there were two powerful men. One was Xiang Yu, the King of Chu. The other was Liu Bang, the King of Han. Xiang Yu was from the place we now call Suqian. Liu Bang was from the place we now call Xuzhou. They fought each other. Liu Bang won in the end, and started the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24).
Today, when Suqian and Xuzhou play in the Su Chao league, their games are always very exciting. But the game isn’t just between these two cities — all the cities in Jiangsu want to win badly.
Jiangsu has many cities. Each city has its own culture and long history. So, every team wants to show that their city is the best.

3. Which of the following sentences is TRUE
A. Liu Bang was born in today’s Suqian.
B. The motto “Fight for your city’s glory” means being friends is better than winning.
C. The games are mostly for making friends between cities.
D. The game between Suqian and Xuzhou today is similar to their history.
4. Which sentence best fits the motto “Fight for your city’s glory”
A. Players should try to become famous. B. Fans love their city so much.
C. The league doesn’t want cities to compete. D. Teams need to study history before playing.

At the beginning of a new year people always like to make a New Year’s resolution (决心) by themselves. They also love to make promises to others. It is true that resolutions and promises are good for peoples’ lives. They can help people to be better and better in the future.
However, the truth is different. To improve ourselves, we often make up our mind to do something. Have you ever said to yourself, “My New Years” resolution is to play the piano well and I will play it an hour a day Have you ever promised to your father, “Dad, I will give up playing computer games on weekdays ” Have you ever told your teacher, “Mr. Zhang, I plan to study hard at English ” Have you ever talked with your friends, “We must practise running from now on ” I’m afraid most of us have had such kind of experiences. However, we find it difficult to put our resolutions or promises into action. Therefore, at the end of the year, we often realize we don’t achieved our goals at all. Resolutions are just the words which were once written on the paper and promises are just the words which were once talked about in the mouth.
People hardly ever keep resolutions or promises. Some people say that they are too busy to do that. Others say they just forget about that. In fact, it’s easier to say something than to do it. A promise is made by words, but it is kept by actions. Action speaks louder than words.
As for me, I’m proud of myself. I always remind (提醒) myself to pay attention to the moment I’m going through because that’s the only way to achieve goals. So no matter what, no matter when, all I need to do is just to keep my eyes on the thing I’m doing now and make it better.
