Sitting in the garden for my friend’s birthday. I felt a buzz (振动) in my pocket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started off: “Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…” and my vision blurred (模糊). I had put so much time and emotional energy into applying, and I thought the rejection meant the end of my science career.
So I was shocked when Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was shocked and overjoyed when she invited me to talk about projects I could do in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all.
I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue.
When I applied to graduate school, I found three programmes promising to allow me to follow my desired research direction. And I applied with the same anxious excitement as before. When I was rejected from one that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undoubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) to keep it from sending me into panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted into one of the other programmes I was also excited about.
Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them.
24.How did the author feel when reading the email
A.anxious B.angry C.surprised D.happy
25.After talking with Professor Devon, the author decided to ________.
A.criticize the review process B.stay longer in the Sahara Desert
C.apply to the original project again D.put his heart and soul into the lab work
26.According to the author, the project with the robotics professor was ________.
A.demanding B.inspiring C.misleading D.amusing
27.What can we learn from this passage
A.An invitation is a reputation. B.An innovation is a resolution.
C.A rejection can be a redirection. D.A reflection can be a restriction.

We are all guilty of grabbing our phones and scrolling through social media when times get boring. Psychologists have noted in numerous studies over the past decade that individuals engage in social media and other digital media to escape boredom. However, the same studies reveal that consuming such media can actually increase boredom in individuals.
That result may be a product of constantly “switching” between different content online, the endless pursuit of the next piece of media to alleviate present boredom.
To investigate the role that fast- forwarding and switching videos has in boredom, Dr Katy Tam, the lead author of the research and researchers performed two experiments on about 1,200 people. In the first trial, the study participants had two viewing experiences. They both watched a 10- minute video without the option to switch or fast- forward and then had a 10- minute period where they could switch between seven 5- minute videos. In the second experiment, participants watched a 10- minute video in one round and in the other round were allowed to fast- forward or rewind through a 50- minute video.
Participants predicted they would be less bored with the option to switch or fast- forward for both experiments but reported afterward that they found watching one video all the way through to be more engaging, satisfying and meaningful.
Tam said boredom was closely linked to attention. “We feel bored when there’s a gap between how engaged we are and how engaged we want to be,” she said. “When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom.”
Finally, said Tam, it could be worth taking your time before hitting the fast- forward or skip buttons. “Our research shows that while people fast- forward or skip video s to avoid boredom, this behaviour can actually make them feel more bored,” she said. “Just as we pay for an immersive (沉浸式) experience in a movie theatre, enjoyment often comes from immersing ourselves in videos rather than swiping (滚屏) through them.”
28.What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 2mean
A.Ease. B.Understand. C.Define. D.Justify.
29.Tam’s study found that participants reported higher levels of boredom when ______.
A.the length of a video was too long. B.the video content was played repeatedly.
C.they switched between videos and within video. D.they watched the same video through to the end.
30.What did Tam present in paragraph 5
A.Ways of watching videos. B.The design of his experiment.
C.Examples of divided attention. D.The cause of people’s boredom.
31.What was Tam’s suggestion in the last paragraph
A.Pay for a viewing experience. B.Refer to the ratings before watching videos.
C.Go to a cinema for an immersive experience.
D.Stay focused on the content while watching videos.

Many people list hiccups (嗝) as one of the most annoying problems which are associated with being human. For a group of people, continuous hiccups can seriously harm the quality of life. In the year 2017, the question “What causes hiccups ” was one of the most searched medical questions. That’s how much of an issue these hiccups are and it also reflects that this problem is so widespread in our daily life.
Dr. Ali Seifi, a professor of the University of Texas, was tired of the traditional methods which are used to remove hiccups, like drinking water or varying breathing techniques. He then came up with the idea that a straw (吸管) could help interrupt hiccups. The straw, which is named HiccAway, requires more suction (吸) power than regular straws in order to draw up liquid. Drinking with this straw can lower the diaphragm (隔膜) while first opening it and then closing it. Doing so stimulates the nerves at the same time, allowing the brain to reset and stop the hiccups.
Dr. James Alvarez of the University of Texas gathered 249 volunteers to use the straw and report back their results. When it comes to the effectiveness, this straw received a score of 4.58 out of 5. About 90% of the participants marked it as more effective than traditional home methods. A majority of the participants reported several occasions when they always suffer from hiccups. 53 reported that they suffered from hiccups weekly and about 11 participants reported daily hiccups issues. The frequent sufferers reported success rates were as high as people who hardly suffer from them.
Some people are convinced that how to interrupt hiccups is an issue in which placebo effect (安慰剂效应) could likely work. A lot of people swear that their own solutions do not end up working for others. It is not clear how this trial could be conducted in a more scientific way.
32.Why does the author mention the question in paragraph 1
A.To show the possible causes of hiccups.
B.To show the terrible effects of hiccups.
C.To prove hiccuping is common in our life.
D.To prove people are concerned about health.
33.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about HiccAway
A.Its working principle. B.Its wide popularity.
C.Its experimental result. D.Its process of producing.
34.What was the participants’ reaction to HiccAway
A.It led to more hiccups for one-fifth of them.
B.It was thought highly of by the majority of them.
C.It had no effect on removing hiccups for most of them.
D.It helped 11 of them completely get rid of daily hiccups.
35.What can we infer about the study from the text
A.Less volunteers should be involved in the study.
B.The study has caught people’s attention on hiccups.
C.Many people are believing hiccups can be cured easily.
D.There has been no well-recognized cure for hiccups so far.

Most of the time, secondary school and university students take part in job shadowing programs. 39 Depending on institutional resources and personal connections within the desired industry, candidates can explore shadowing opportunities through various ways.
40 First, schedule an initial meeting with your host and arrive on time to show your professionalism and enthusiasm. Then request a workspace tour to familiarize yourself with the environment. Ask if your host has any duties you can assist with so you can gain practical experience. Before you leave, express your gratitude to your host. By following these guidelines, candidates can maximize the benefits of job shadowing while developing meaningful professional connections.

I must share a heart-warming experience I cherished this week, both as a caring individual and a member of the community. I take the train, my main commuting (通勤) way, to work every morning from a train station near my house. I can get to the station quite easily as there is a way at the back of the station which provides a great shortcut. In summer, when it’s hot, I always try to rush through it because it can get quite smelly from all the garbage that people throw away.
It was one of those days that I was trying to rush through as usual when something made me stop for a moment. I saw the most unexpected and beautiful act by an old woman walking ahead of me with the help of a white stick. The old woman was quite short and thin, and had white hair. I remember that she was wearing a bright orange jacket and she was walking, assisted by a white cane. She was walking slowly as each step took some effort. I hadn’t particularly noticed her at first, until she stopped near a garbage bin.
She slowly laid her walking stick against the garbage bin and then leaned on it with her right hand. Then she bent down and reached for the garbage, but she clearly found it difficult and it took her a while. She picked up some garbage off the ground with her left hand and slowly straightened herself up again, all the while using the garbage bin to support herself. She threw the garbage inside the bin, dusted her trousers off and then reached for her walking cane again. She then gradually stood up straight and carried on walking. I was blown away to see this amazing old woman make such a painstaking effort to keep even a small part of the way clean! I haven't been able to stop thinking about that all day.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
