二、阅读理解
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most famous American novels published in 1884. It was one of the first novels in the USA written in common, everyday language. For example, using non-standard English, Twain wrote, “I haven’t got no money” to mean “I do not have any money”. In this way, Twain made his characters (人物) very true to life.
The story is told by Huckleberry Finn, who runs away from his abusive father, who always hit Finn without reasons. At first, Huck hides on a small island in the middle of the Mississippi River. There, he finds Jim, a black slave (奴隶) who has run away from a farm. The two of them stay on the island for a few weeks and become friends, but they must leave because Huck learns that people are looking for Jim. They decide to travel on a raft (筏子) on the Mississippi River to reach the Ohio River, which will take them north to a state that does not allow slavery (不允许拥有奴隶).
During their journey, Huck and Jim visit many places along the river and meet many different people. Unfortunately, most of the people they meet are not good. For example, Huck and Jim meet a family, the Grangerfords, who have been fighting with another family for so many years. But nobody remembers how the fight started. While Huck stays with the Grangerfords, the two families fight again, and several members of both families are killed. Later, Huck and Jim meet the King and the Duke. The two men control their raft and make money by tricking people. Luckily, Huck and Jim try their best to run away with the raft.
Although the people Huck and Jim meet are bad, they are also funny. Mark Twain used humor to show readers the problems of American society in the 1800s. More importantly, many things that happened to Huck and Jim are bad, but the novel has a happy ending for both of them. Jim gets his freedom because his owner (主人) has died and set him free in her will (遗嘱), and Huck learns that his father has died, so he is also safe.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an adventurous and humorous story, and it teaches modern readers a lot about American society in the 1800s.

Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12,000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day as interest.
Then a kind old lady called Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, and then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent (暴力的) man especially when he was drunk, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I didn’t go to school like the other boys. I either lived on the streets or in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with Douglas. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me. Then Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going.
Several months later, the winter came. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside Douglas’s house. There was a cross on the heel of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!
“He’s heard about my money. And he wants it!” That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. It had a spirit inside that could answer people’s questions about the future.

Each time he said that, the man with the lantern smiled evilly and said, “Indeed, you won’t have any chance to tell anyone!”
The man holding the gun was about to shoot, but the other man said, “Wait!” They talked in a low voice for a while, and then walked towards me.
I quickly ran away and hid behind some boxes. After that, the two men stood by the deck railing and talked.
“Let’s just put the stolen things in our boat and leave,” the man with the lantern said. “Soon, this steamboat will be washed back into the river and sink. When that happens, old Jim Turner inside will surely die in the water.”
“But what if it doesn’t get washed back ” the other man asked.
“I think we can wait for a while and see.”
When they went back inside, I ran away. I was covered in a cold sweat (汗水).

Widow (寡妇) Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going to school. The hardest things for me were eating my meals at the table and sleeping in a soft bed. I missed my old life. Sometimes I ran away and spent a few days in the forest. “Your father doesn’t know what he’s going to do yet, ” Jim said.
“Maybe he’ll stay or maybe he’ll go.”

I looked at him and he looked at me. Neither of us spoke for several minutes. Then he said, “Where did you get those new clothes ”
“Widow Douglas bought them for me. ”

When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there ”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.
A few days later, one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t crash. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.
We decided to leave at once. It’s all right to live in a house for a little while, but you feel more free and easy and comfortable on a raft.

We started digging the tunnel (隧道) to the hut that night. It was hard and it took us two nights to finish it. We came up under Jim’s bed. He was very surprised to see us. “Hello, Jim! We’re going to rescue (救) you.”
Tom said. “But we aren’t ready to do it yet. You’ll have to wait a couple of days. Don’t worry! You’ll soon be free!”
Then we crawled (爬) through the tunnel back to our bedroom. We sat on the bed and talked about a rescue plan.
“I’m going to write a letter to Uncle.” Tom said. “Of course I won’t sign it.”

“Well, Huck, if Uncle Silas knows, he’ll try to stop the thieves. The adventure (冒险) will be more exciting if somebody tries to stop us.”
I didn’t understand why we had to look for trouble but I said nothing. Tom always knew best. So he wrote the letter and I climbed out of the window and put it under the front door.
Uncle Silas found it in the morning. After reading it, he went out without finishing his breakfast. At half past eleven we climbed out of the bedroom window and went to the hut. “Come on, Jim!” Tom said, “Huck, you go first. Then you, Jim. I will go last.”
We heard someone opening the door of the hut. A man shouted. “He’s gone! The thieves have stolen the runaway slave!”
We quickly crawled out the other end and ran towards the fence (篱笆). I turned around and saw a crowd of men outside the hut. They were carrying guns and looking for the thief.
I climbed over the fence and Jim followed me. Tom was right behind us. Unluckily, he caught his trousers on a nail. He pulled them free but the man heard the noise. They pointed their guns at us.
“Answer! Or we’ll shoot (开枪).” they shouted.
We didn’t answer. We ran and then the men started shooting. We ran faster. We ran to the river, jumped into the canoe and started paddling (划桨). The men were still looking for us but we were safe on the raft.
“Jim! You’re a free man!” I said.
Jim was very happy. We were all happy.
“It was a great adventure.” Tom said. “I even got a bullet (子弹) in my leg!”
It was true. His leg was bleeding badly. Jim and I found some old shirts and wrapped them round Tom’s leg. “We must get a doctor.” Jim said.

I wanted to go and look at a place in the middle of the island that I had found when I was exploring. We started and soon got to it, because the island was only three miles long and a quarter of a mile wide.
This place was a hill about forty feet high. We had a hard time getting to the top. The sides were so steep and the trees were so thick. We walked and climbed around all over it, and found a big hole in the rock. It was a good place to play our game. The hole was as big as two or three rooms, and Jim could stand up straight in it. It was cool there. Jim wanted to put our things there, but I said we didn’t want to be climbing up and down there all the time. Jim said if we had the boat hidden in a good place and put all the things in the hole, we could rush there when anybody was to come to the island. They would never find us without dogs.
Besides, he said that little birds had said it was going to rain. We didn’t want the things to get wet.
So we went back and got the boat, and pulled all the things up there. Then we found a place close by to hide the boat in, among the thick willows. We took some fish off the lines and set them again, and began to get ready for dinner.
The door of the hole was big enough to roll a hogshead (大桶) in, and there was also a good place to build a fire. So we built a fire and cooked dinner. We spread the blankets inside, and ate our dinner. We put all the other things at the back of the hole.
Pretty soon it darkened and began to thunder. Directly it began to rain, and I never saw the wind blow so heavily. It was one of these regular summer storms. It would get so dark that it looked all blue-black outside.
“Jim, this is nice,” I said. “I wouldn’t want to be nowhere else but here. Pass me another piece of fish and some hot bread.”
“Well, if it weren’t for Jim, you wouldn’t stay here. You would stay in the woods, without food, and you would get half-dead from the shower. That’s true, dear. The chickens know when it rains, and so do the birds. I know.”

I knew I was all right now. Nobody else would come a-hunting after me. I got my traps out of the canoe and made me a nice camp in the thick woods. When it was dark I sat by my camp fire, feeling pretty satisfied but by and by, it got sort of lonesome, so I went and sat on the bank and listened to the current crashing along, and counted the stars and drift logs and rafts that came down, and then went to bed. There was no better way to put in time when you are lonesome, you can’t stay so, and you soon get it over.
And so for three days and nights. No difference. But the next day I went exploring around the island. I went fooling along in the deep woods till I judged I wasn’t far from the foot of the island. I had my gun along, but I had shot nothing, it was for protection. About this time I almost stepped on a good-sized snake, and it moved quietly and smoothly through the grass and flowers, and I was after it, trying to get a shot at it. I clipped (疾驰) along and all of a sudden I bounded (跳) right on to the ashes of a camp fire that was still smoking.
My heart jumped up among my lungs. I never waited to look further, but unlocked my gun and went sneaking back on my tiptoes as fast as I could. Every now and then, I stopped a second among the thick leaves and listened, but my breath came so hard that I couldn’t hear anything else. I moved quietly along another piece further, then listened again and so on. If I saw a stump (树桩), I took it for a man; If I stepped on a stick and broke it, it made me feel that a person had cut one of my breaths in two and I only got half.
There was no time to be fooling around. When getting to the camp, I got all my traps into my canoe again to have them out of sight. I put out the fire and threw the ashes around to look like an old last year’s camp, and then climbed a tree.
I suppose I was up for two hours but I didn’t see or hear anything—l only thought I heard and saw as much as a thousand things. Well, I couldn’t stay up there forever. So at last I got down, but I kept in the thick woods and on the lookout all the time. All I could get to eat was berries and what was left over from breakfast.
