The Living Planet Index (LPI) report is released every two years by WWF and ZSL.The report tracks the best efforts of scientists to count wildlife populations around the world. The word population here means groups of the same kinds of animals (species) living in the same general area (or the size of those groups). The report doesn’t look at all wild animals, only vertebrates — animals with a backbone. These include mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The report studied 5,230 species found in 31,821 populations around the world, and about half of the populations studied are dropping. This year’s LPI says that, on average, wildlife populations dropped by 69% in the 48 years from 1970 to 2018.That’s a huge drop, and it’s very worrying.Marco Lambertini, who leads WWF, said, “The message is clear and the lights are flashing red.Our most comprehensive report ever on the state of global vertebrate wildlife populations presents terrifying figures: a shocking two-thirds decline in less than 50 years.” The LPI isn’t reporting numbers of animals. It’s reporting the average change in the size of animal populations over time.In fact, their losses are so extreme that the average drop for all populations was 69%. Central and South America and the Caribbean had the greatest population losses — a drop of 94%.Next came Africa, with a 66% drop, followed by Asia and the Pacific with a 55% drop.Europe and North America showed smaller losses. Most of the losses are related to human actions. The biggest problem is the loss of wild areas to growing cities, and activities like farming and deforestation.Hunting, overfishing, and pollution are also big challenges.Climate change is a growing problem, and may soon be the biggest one.1.How many species suffered from loss in numbers according to the report?( )A.About 2,615. [2] It took less than a single day to change my hair from black to white. [1]句中when引导定语从句,修饰先行词the day。 [2]It takes sb some time to do sth意为“某人花费多长时间做某事”,其中It为形式主语。 One day, my two brothers and I were coming back from the islands [3]where we often risked③ going and got more fish than others. All at once④, the sky was covered with dark clouds and in less than⑤ a minute we were in a terrible storm.A huge wave⑥ covered our boat and my younger brother fell into⑦ the sea.My elder brother put his mouth close to my ear and cried out “Moskoe-strom!” [4]The moment I heard the word I became very frightened⑧.I knew [5]what he meant by that one word well enough. With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of⑨ the whirlpool⑩.We were hopeless.Nothing could save us.I felt sick,[6] as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream. We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool. It may appear strange, but at that moment, when we were on the edge of the whirlpool, I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it.I began to think [7]how amazing a thing it was to die in such a way, and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature.Suddenly, we went over the edge.I thought my life was over. But moment after moment passed, and I was still safe. The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed .I saw clearly that there were other objects in the whirlpool — trees and barrels .After a while, I became curious about the whirlpool itself.I then made three important observations .The first, [8]the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent , round objects fell down more rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. So I tied myself to a barrel to help me float .I tried to [9]make my brother understand, but he was too frightened and stayed in the heavy boat.Without waiting, I jumped into the sea to try and escape . [10]As you can see, the reason why I’m here to tell the story is that I made the right decision. Some time after I left the boat, [11]with my brother in it, it was pulled into the bottom of the whirlpool.Soon after that, the whirlpool became less wild. Then the sky was clear, the wind calmer, and the moon was shining.I was still tied to the barrel and the waves soon carried me to an area [12]where the other fishermen were.In the end , a boat picked me up .I was very tired. The fishermen were my old friends, but they were unable to recognise me.When I told them my story, they did not believe it.Now I have told you, and I cannot expect you to believe me any more than the fishermen did. [10]句中As引导非限制性定语从句,意为“正如,正像”;the reason why ...be that ... 风险;危险;冒险④all at once突然⑤less than少于⑥wave n.海浪;波涛⑦fall into落入;分成fall down跌倒;失败;倒塌⑧frightened adj.受惊的,害怕的⑨in the direction of朝…… 边缘on the edge of 在…… 逃离;逃避 pull into (车)进站 in the end终于,最后 pick up捡起;获得;收拾;(汽车;飞机)乘载;不费力地学会 recognise vt. Step One: Pre-readingDo you know any stories about the sea? The Living Planet Index (LPI) report is released every two yearsby WWF and ZSL. The report tracks the best efforts of scientists to countwildlife populations around the world. The word population here meansgroups of the same kinds of animals (species) living in the same generalarea (or the size of those groups). The report doesn’t look at all wild animals, only vertebrates —animals with a backbone. These include mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The report studied 5,230 species found in31,821 populations around the world, and about half of the populationsstudied are dropping. This year’s LPI says that, on average, wildlife populationsdropped by 69% in the 48 years from 1970 to 2018.That’s a huge drop, and it’s very worrying.Marco Lambertini, who leads WWF, said,“The message is clear and the lights are flashing red.Our mostcomprehensive report ever on the state of global vertebrate wildlifepopulations presents terrifying figures: a shocking two-thirds decline inless than 50 years.”The LPI isn’t reporting numbers of animals. It’s reporting theaverage change in the size of animal populations over time.In fact, theirlosses are so extreme that the average drop for all populations was 69%. Central and South America and the Caribbean had the greatestpopulation losses — a drop of 94%.Next came Africa, with a 66%drop, followed by Asia and the Pacific with a 55% drop.Europe andNorth America showed smaller losses. Most of the losses are related to human actions. The biggest problemis the loss of wild areas to growing cities, and activities like farming anddeforestation.Hunting, overfishing, and pollution are also bigchallenges.Climate change is a growing problem, and may soon be thebiggest one. 1.
