One quiet afternoon in France in her studio, wood crafting (木工技艺) artist Hua Yong found herself watching water boil. Without thinking, she reached for her phone and refreshed the screen. At that very moment, she realized how much modern life is consumed by speed. “We are completely swept up by the fast pace of life,” she said. “It’s becoming harder to find time to unwind among the everyday chaos of life.”
Hua Yong, the 2024 receiver of the Hand of Wisdom prize, a Sino-French crafts exchange program, spent two months in Paris last year, a rare stretch of uninterrupted time that allowed her to reflect on the act of creation. She began experimenting with simple geometric (几何的)forms, repeating them to create visual effects that seemed to go beyond time and space. “I thought about how to create something new from nothing, and used the highest standards of traditional Chinese craftsmanship to bring these ideas to life,” she said.
“Wood crafting requires the investment of time,” she noted. Her exhibition Changing the World in Silence at Yishu 8, an art platform in Beijing, marked the highlight of a year’s reflection. Running through mid-June, the show featured 25 pieces, 11 of which were created after her Paris residency. Among the works was a vortex-like (漩涡状的) table, which drew the viewer’s mind into a different dimension. “We hope all the crafts here quietly accompany the viewers, bringing a brief mental escape and a moment of relaxation,” described Hua.
“The changes in her work’s form between movement and stillness are projections of conceptual unrest,” said Su Dan, the artistic director of Hand of Wisdom, observing Hua’s shift since her return. “She has long engaged with Chinese traditional materials and been constantly thinking. Works created in such a state of reflection become models of design philosophy: They are short-lived, yet everlasting.”
24. Why did Hua Yong reach for her phone in Paragraph 1
A. She felt like taking a photo. B. She tried to have a rest among chaos.
C. She intended to make a call. D. She had formed the habitual behavior.
25. What change did Hua Yong make after her Sino-French crafts exchange program
A. She integrated Sino-French wood crafts. B. She applied geometric shapes creatively.
C. She shifted to rare and simple materials. D. She adopted digital techniques flexibly.
26. What do we know about the works in Changing the World in Silence
A. They relied hardly on handwork. B. They mirrored the rush of modern life.
C. They featured mental relaxation. D. They were well-appreciated by viewers.
27. What does Su Dan imply about Hua Yong
A. She underwent life unrest in Paris. B. She deserted wood craft traditions.
C. Her works turn out the best models. D. Her works convey a consistent idea.

For a long time, bacteria(细菌) were primarily viewed as harmful organisms(生物) responsible for various diseases. However, scientific advances have revealed a different story, particularly concerning the complex community of microorganisms living in our digestive system—our gut microbiota(肠道微生物群). This ecosystem, consisting of trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, is now recognized as a crucial partner in our overall health.
The relationship between humans and their gut bacteria is essentially a form of cooperation. These microbes assist in breaking down complex carbohydrates(碳水化合物) that our own bodies cannot digest, turning them into essential nutrients and vitamins. Furthermore, a balanced gut microbiota acts as a defensive barrier against harmful pathogens(病原体), competing for resources and space to protect us. It also communicates with our brain through a network known as the gut-brain axis(轴), producing chemical messages that can influence our mood, stress levels, and even sleep patterns. The foundation of this unique community is established at birth and during early childhood, shaped by initial exposure to microbes from our mother and the immediate environment. Interestingly, the final composition of each person's microbiota is unique, continually influenced by factors like diet, lifestyle, and environment throughout their life.
Maintaining a rich and diverse gut ecosystem is vital. Diets high in processed foods can damage this delicate balance, reducing its diversity and potentially leading to health issues. Conversely, a diet rich in fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides excellent nourishment for these beneficial microbes. Regular physical activity also contributes positively to microbial health. The study of gut microbiota is a rapidly expanding field. Future research aims to understand how specific changes in this community relate to conditions ranging from obesity to anxiety, promising new, personalized approaches to medicine and nutrition. It highlights the profound importance of preserving this inner world for our long-term well-being.
28. According to the passage, what is the primary role of gut microbes in digestion
A. They produce complex carbohydrates.
B. They defend against all viruses and fungi.
C. They break down indigestible materials into nutrients.
D. They directly control our personal behavior.
29. How does the passage describe the communication between gut microbiota and the brain
A. The brain sends direct instructions to control microbial composition.
B. Gut microbes produce chemical signals that affect our mental state.
C. Communication only occurs when the gut ecosystem is damaged.
D. It is a one-way pathway from the brain to regulate digestion.
30. It can be inferred from the passage that a diet high in processed foods might ________.
A. reduce gut microbial diversity and affect overall health
B. stop the production of all essential nutrients in the gut
C. completely destroy the gut-brain communication system
D. change a person's genetic makeup related to gut health
31. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To explain the potential risks of damaging the balance of gut microbiota.
B. To describe the process of how gut microbiota develops from simple to complex.
C. To introduce the main functions and importance of gut microbiota to our health.
D. To suggest further research on gut microbiota to solve mental health problems.
D
Have you ever felt so stressed that you just sort of froze Your body goes still, you can’t feel much but, at the same time, your senses are working overtime. You know you must act soon; but it’s as if something is stopping you. This “freezing”, or tonic immobility in academic terms, is an adaptive defense response to stress or danger.
When we freeze, our heart rate drops and our blood pressure changes. Our pupils might become wider. A flood of hormones (荷尔蒙) spread quickly, readying us for action. It can all happen within seconds.
While fight-or-flight seems logical for survival, freezing appears counterproductive — potentially too much to handle, making us incapable of acting or making a decision. But is that really all that’s going on Not according to Prof Karin Roelofs, a neuroscientist who studies freezing at Radboud University. “Many people think that freezing is a kind of shutdown of the system,” she says.“ What we actually find is that in threatening situations, freezing actually helps gain more information, prepare actions, and improve perception and decision-making.” Freezing acts like an emergency flow state: watchful, not petrified.
Importantly, this response can be trained. Roelofs highlights two groups controlling freezing: living statues, street performers maintaining extreme stillness and snipers (狙击手) requiring absolute stillness while making decisions. Lab research confirms this. A virtual reality shooting game showed players with stronger freezing responses performed better and decided faster. Freezing doesn’t slow responses. “Brain noise reduces. Perception increases. You make better decisions faster,” Roelofs clarifies.
But let’s say you’re not a sniper, or don’t spend your weekends as a living statue. What if you’re about to take an exam or lead a big business meeting Those situations involving social pressure, may not be life or death, but still can cause freezing. The key is to use this response through training, particularly focused breathing: maintain slow, rhythmic exhalation (有节奏的呼气). Instead of feeling out of control, you can master it and — sniper or not — take your best shot.
32. What happens in “freezing” according to the text
A. Awareness is lost. B. The heart pounds.
C. Senses are sharper. D. The breath quickens.
33. What does the underlined word “petrified” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Confused. B. Panicked. C. Distressed. D. Occupied.
34. Why are living statues and snipers mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To contrast response types. B. To illustrate freezing causes.
C. To support response training. D. To criticize stressful professions.
35. How should students manage exam freezing according to the text
A. Seek professional help. B. Apply trained breathing.
C. Hold breath to stay still. D. Make last-minute revisions.

Popular for being cost-effective, face yoga can be found all over social media, with some influencers promising a “natural facelift” effect capable of toning, slimming and reducing fine lines(皱纹) on the face. 36
“The face is made up of layers of skin, fat and muscles sitting on top of the skull (颅骨). Under the top layer of skin, there is a layer of fat sitting on top of the muscles,” explained Dr. Anetta Reszko, a clinical assistant professor. “ 37 But over time, as we age, or if we don’t use those muscles, they can decline. Moving and stretching the face for a while every day could help restore some shape to the face.”
Dr. Reszko carried out a study to test this face yoga hypothesis (假说). Improved facial fullness among 16 participants is observed after 20 weeks. “The place where we noticed the biggest change was the cheeks, and that makes sense, because the cheek muscles are among the largest facial muscles. 38 However, due to the limited sample size and lack of direct measurements, further clinical trials would be needed to confirm this volumizing effect(增厚效应).”
For Hagen, a face yoga instructor, this exercise is more than just a workout. 39 “Some people may approach it differently, but anything that can make you feel calm and better is admissible.”
40 If someone is serious about taking up a daily face yoga routine, Dr. Reszko suggests avoiding stretching the delicate under-eye area, which tends to be thinner and more sensitive. For more dramatic interventions like firming wrinkles or treating acne (粉刺), she recommends getting the advice of a board-certified(通过职业验证的) doctor.
A.It’s a way to be more in tune with one’s mind.
B.Besides, how much is face yoga backed by science
C.Some people are concerned about the effect of face yoga.
D.It’s also necessary to mind the possible harm of face yoga.
E.The fat and the muscles work together to give the face volume.
F.But how much are these promised benefits a stretch of the truth
G.If you exercise them, the growth of them is going to be the most noticeable.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When David signed up for Ms. Sandra’s “Endangered Traditions” class at Willow High, he didn’t expect this class to be about saving history. Ms. Sandra, one of the few remaining masters of su filindeu, a handmade Italian pasta (意大利面), explained in the first class that this skill had been practiced for over 300 years and was the rarest of 350 pasta varieties worldwide. She emphasized, “Fewer than ten people in the world still master this skill. If we don’t act, the art will disappear.”
The students fell silent, realizing the importance of what they were learning. Then, with flour-dusted hands, Ms. Sandra shifted the mood. “Now, let me show you its magic.” The students leaned forward as she started the incredible transformation. She rolled the dough (面团) into a thick rope and then stretched it into 256 perfect strands (线). The classroom was filled with admiration as the teacher’s hands moved gracefully.
For weeks, David and his classmates threw themselves into learning the skill of making su filindeu with Ms. Sandra’s help, but it didn’t come easily. The dough kept breaking or sticking together. Sometimes, they couldn’t stretch more than 16 strands. Still, they refused to quit, helping and encouraging each other as they improved little by little.
One afternoon, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with heavy steps. She sighed, “The school board thinks our su filindeu class isn’t practical. They’ve decided to cancel it next term unless we can prove its value.” She added, “It’s true that machines can mass-produce pasta in minutes, but if we only value what’s fast and easy, we lose centuries of knowledge.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the classroom. After a moment of silence, David stood up. “What if we let more people know about it How about an exhibition ” he suggested. The class lit up with excitement. Inspired by their reaction, David immediately volunteered to organize the exhibition. Ms. Sandra watched, proud and hopeful. Perhaps, she thought, they really could work some magic.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
David and his classmates quickly got to work. The day after the exhibition, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with a smile.

第一节
One Possible Version:
Dear teachers and fellow students,
I'm honored to share the unique beauty of Chinese paper cutting with you. As an essential part of our traditional culture, this amazing art form has been passing down through generations, reflecting the creativity and wisdom of Chinese people.
What makes paper cutting so valuable is its rich cultural meanings. Different patterns carry best wishes - the "double happiness" for weddings, fish for abundance, and pomegranates for many children. These works not only decorate our homes but also preserve important cultural values.
However, this precious heritage needs our protection. I suggest we start by learning basic skills in art classes and organize paper cutting clubs. Let's take action to ensure this beautiful tradition continues to flourish in modern times. Thank you for your listening.
One Possible Version:
David and his classmates quickly got to work. They spent days practicing the skill, determined to perfect it for the exhibition. David, who was in charge of organizing, contacted local media and invited community members. He knew that if they could show the beauty and history of su filindeu, people would appreciate it. On the day of the exhibition, the students demonstrated the process, explaining its significance. Many visitors were amazed by the skill, realizing that traditions like this should not be lost.
The day after the exhibition, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with a smile. She announced that the school board had decided to keep the class after seeing the positive response from the exhibition. “You’ve shown everyone the value of preserving traditions,” she said proudly. David and his classmates cheered, feeling a sense of accomplishment. They knew that their hard work had made a difference and that they had played a part in saving a piece of history.

M: When was it invented
W: In about 450 BCE. But in Britain, people started to use umbrellas in the 18th century. Then the British established an umbrella Museum in 1969.
M: I have never heard about that. I don't know much about this invention, even though I majored in history at college.
W: In fact, it is impossible to know the history of every invention.
M: Yeah, that makes sense. But you’ve really inspired me, I plan to share the history of umbrellas with my students tomorrow.
