二、阅读理解
Bethany Meilani Hamilton was born on February 8, 1990, Kauai, Hawaii, where she grew up with two older brothers. Hamilton’s parents were both surfers and they started teaching Bethany how to surf at a young age, and she learned quickly with the support of her brothers. By age 8, Bethany was winning first place in surfing contests for her age group. Hamilton began competing more seriously at the age of nine, winning several more competitions in her age group.
On October 31, 2003, while surfing with friends near Tunnels Beach, a 14-foot tiger shark attacked her. Bethany said, “My arm was hanging in the water, and it just came and bit me. It kind of pulled me back and forth. But I just held onto my board and then the shark let go.” The shark tore off Bethany’s left arm just below her shoulder. Hamilton’s friends rushed her to the hospital. Bethany made it through several surgeries without infection (感染), and miraculously survived even though she had lost almost 60% of her blood. The doctor said that her athletic training helped her to survive the attack and blood loss.
While she was healing, Bethany thought for a while that she might not surf again. She was concerned that it would be much harder to stand up on the board using only one hand and that her balance would be completely off. But with hard work and determination she returned to surfing. She says, “It’s hard for me to describe the joy I felt after I stood up and rode a wave in for the first time after the attack. I was greatly thankful and happy inside. The tiny bit of doubt that would sometimes tell me ‘you’ll never surf again’ was gone in one wave!”
As for fear of another shark attack, Bethany says that sometimes her heart pounds when she sees a shadow (阴影) under the water. But she believes that faith provides hope and a future for those who feel down and defeated in their lives.
Bethany’s popularity and hope for the future led her to partner with World Vision to create “Surfing for Children in Crisis”. Bethany hopes that her involvement in the campaign will help provide disabled children from around the world with care, support, and hope.

Making Everything Sweet
Japanese scientists have developed a special kind of tomato. It can change an eater’s sense of taste, says a report in Science News. For about an hour after a person eats one of the tomatoes, sour foods taste sweet.
Say you eat one of the tomatoes before lunch. Then you take a bite of a lemon. You will find that the lemon tastes like super-sweet lemonade.
How magical is that! The key ingredient (成分) in the taste-changing tomatoes is “miraculin.” Miraculin is found in berries that grow in West Africa. These fruits are sometimes sold as “Miracle Fruit” berries.
People have long known about the ability of miracle berries to change taste. In some countries, the berries are used as a way to help people lose weight. For example, a dieter can eat a berry and then eat low-calorie sour foods that will taste wonderfully sweet.
Scientists found miraculin in the miracle berry in 1968. Since then, people have wondered how to manufacture it. One way could be to harvest the berries. The problem was that if demand got too large, the berry plants could be driven to extinction.
That’s where the Japanese scientists came in. Professor Kazuhisa Kato and his team at the University of Tsukuba studied the DNA of the miracle berry. They found a gene that contains the instructions for how to make miraculin.
Kato and other researchers put the gene for miraculin into the DNA of a tomato. As a result, the tomatoes started to make miraculin. Those tomatoes had just as much miraculin as miracle berries do. These “miracle” tomatoes could be grown in large numbers. If scientists can grow other foods with miraculin inside, then there won’t be any need to harvest all the miracle berries.
The researchers don’t know yet how the tomato-based miraculin can be used. Perhaps it could be sold as a dieting food, to be taken before meals.
24.The tomato is special because ________.
A.it turns all tastes sweet
B.it can only be eaten before lunch
C.it changes a sour taste to a sweet one
D.it has a magical ingredient
25.The underlined word “extinction” in Paragraph 5 probably means ______.
A.a state of low- growing B.a state of being active
C.a state of fast-growing D.a state of complete death
26.According to the article, the Japanese scientists ______.
A.found a gene that contains instructions for making miraculin
B.discovered the secrets of miracle fruit berries in 1968
C.have planted miracle tomatoes in large numbers
D.invented the miraculin gene and put it into the tomato
27.According to the article, we can know that ______.
A.It was a latest discovery that miracle berries could change taste
B.The tomato is a low-calorie fruit that tastes wonderfully sweet
C.Scientists have already found many uses for mariculin

Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers, led by the scientist Dr. Matt Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and other creatures that live in this part of the sea. The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore and we spent three days on a boat.
The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to collect information. The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite frightened — mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around and I could see all the way to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down.
I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team were very friendly and everyone was happy to explain what they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will definitely encourage me to work harder to become a scientist.
