Growing up as a kid in the UK, I was fascinated by insects. Wanting to protect them, I started building houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves. I then moved on to making little cups and saucers from silver foil (箔纸) for the magical creatures. When seeing my work, my mother told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become.
As the years went by, my designs became more complicated. Making sculptures isn’t actually enjoyable. I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process.
One time, a fly landed on a Cinderella carriage sculpture I was working on. The fly’s wings blew it away, and it was lost. I was heartbroken. Another time, I accidentally breathed in a microscopic Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now in the Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one the second time around.
My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. In 2012, I met the queen, giving her a crown on the head of a pin. In 2013, I received my first Guinness World Record for creating the smallest sculpture by hand, a 24-carat gold motorbike that fitted inside a hair. In 2017, I beat my record with a sculpture of a human fetus (胎儿) that measured 0.078 mm by 0.053mm.
I was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) as an adult. In school, my teachers had pointed me out as an example of failure; now, I see my autism as a gift. It’s pushed me to be the best I can be. I hold workshops in schools for neurodiverse children, sharing my story and helping them create their own miniature figures.
The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I’ve tried to make bigger sculptures, but small is best for me. We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty, too.
4. What drove the author to make tiny sculpture at the beginning
A. His interest in insects. B. His desire to make a name.
C. His dream of setting a record. D. His awareness of wildlife protection.
5. Which of the following can best describe the author’s sculpting process
A. Eventful and enjoyable. B. Complex and frustrating.
C. Money-wasting but entertaining. D. Time-consuming but fulfilling.
6. How does the author deal with his autism now
A. He receives medical treatment. B. He takes full advantage of it.
C. He regards it as the source of failure. D. He shares it and asks help from others.
7. What message does the author mainly convey through the text
A. Great art comes at a cost of loss. B. Childhood experiences make a career.
C. Minor things in life can carry weight. D. Courage contributes to great achievements.

Researchers at the University of Exeter in England have crafted a device that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to detect Asian wasps (黄蜂). AI refers to the capability of computers to learn from experiences and execute tasks swiftly that would typically require a significant time investment from humans.
Asian wasps are considered an invasive species. indicating that they are not native to the UK and can disrupt our ecosystem — the environment and its living organisms. These wasps feed on local insects and pose a significant threat to honey bees with a single wasp capable of killing up to 50 honey bees in a day.
The innovative system, named VespAI, uses a sponge cloth soaked with a liquid that attracts wasps. Once the wasps are drawn in an automatic camera takes pictures of them. The AI then analyzes the photos to determine whether the insect is an Asian wasp or a European wasp, which is a native species.
If an Asian wasp is spotted, a notification is sent right away to the researcher’s phone or computer. VespAI acts as an early-warning system, allowing for the detection of any Asian wasps that may have entered a new area of the UK. Its high precision helps authorities respond quickly to follow the wasps, find their nests, and get rid of them before they can reproduce.
There is growing concern among experts that Asian wasps may have made a lasting home in the UK rather than being merely transient or accidental arrivals. Currently, the UK’s way of dealing with Asian wasps depends on people seeing them, recognizing them, and reporting them. However, many of these reports turn out to be other kinds of insects, which is not a very effective way to handle the situation.
Dr. Thomas O’Shea-Wbeller, who worked on VespAI, said this new system won’t mistake other insects for Asian wasps or miss them when they come around. VespAI has been tested on the island of Jersey and will be tried in other places this year.
8. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. VespAI’s design and operation.
B. The effectiveness of wasps traps.
C. VespAI’s influence on ecosystem.
D. Traditional wasp detecting methods.
9. What does the underlined word “transient” mean in paragraph5
A. Widespread. B. Temporary. C. Frequent. D. Dangerous.
10. Which statement Would Dr. Thomas probably agree with
A. VespAI will help manage wasp invasions.
B. VespAI requires constant human inspection.
C. The current reporting system is highly effective.
D. The current methods fail to identify Asian wasps.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. AI Disrupts the Survival of Insects
B. The Threat of Asian Wasps to Bees
C. AI Technology Boosts Wasp Detection
D. The Impact of Al on Insect Identification
D
Microscopic plastic pieces are everywhere, and a new study reveals they exist in bottled water at concentrations 10 to 100 times higher than previously estimated. Researchers from Columbia University and Rutgers University found roughly 240,000 detectable plastic pieces in a typical liter of bottled water, with the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers used stimulated Raman scattering microscopy and machine learning to detect seven common plastics, testing three unnamed bottled water brands. About 10% of these particles (微粒) are microplastics (5 millimeters to 1 micrometer), and 90% are nanoplastics (纳米塑料) (less than 1 micrometer). Microplastics have already been found in human lungs, blood and placentas. “Nanoplastics could be even more dangerous than microplastics because when inside the human body, the smaller it goes, the easier for it to be misidentified as the natural component of the cell,” says Wei Min, a Columbia chemistry professor and co-author on the study.
The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) stated it had “very limited notice” to review the study, arguing the new detection method needs to be fully reviewed by the scientific community and more research needs to be done to develop standardized methods for measuring and quantifying nanoplastics in our environment. It added there is no scientific agreement on the potential health impacts of nano and microplastic particles and media reports unnecessarily scare consumers.
Phoebe Stapleton another co-author of the study, says researchers already know that nanoplastics are in water. “But if you can’t quantify them or create images of them, it’s hard to believe they really exist. The importance of our team’s research is that it now reveals this clearly — it not only provides computer-generated images, but also lets us measure the nanoplastics. Even more importantly, it offers chemical analysis of those measurements.” she says, adding that the research helps people better understand how much plastic humans usually take into their bodies and what effects it has.
12 How does the author introduce the new findings
A. By giving examples. B. By quoting an expert.
C. By defining a concept. D. By providing statistics.
13. What could make nanoplastics a greater threat compared with microplastics
A. Difficulty in detecting it.
B. Failure to create its image.
C. Larger quantity than microplastics.
D. High concentration levels in bottled water.
14. What is IBWA’s attitude towards the study
A. Objective. B. Approving.
C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
15. What is Phoebe Stapleton’s remark mainly about
A. Uniqueness of the study.
B. Significance of the study.
C. Potential application of the study.
D. Possible direction for further study.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两个为多余选项。
Interrupting another person’s sentence is normally considered as undesirable. However, it is not always equally impolite. In addition to the hostile (敌意的) takeover of the sentence, which serves to dominate, there are also friendly, even positive interruptions. ___16___ And it can give a conversation momentum (动力). Over 30 years ago, communication scientist Julia A. Goldberg at the University of Wyoming categorized interruptions into three types—bad, good and neutral.
An interruption in the sense of gaining power almost always happens in front of an audience. And this is precisely the type of interruption that men tend to use. Sociologists from Princeton University found that the larger a group is, the more likely it is that men will take the floor. ___17___ This is because “speaking time also has an influence on dominance”, says Kothoff.
___18___ These interruptions can be used to express interest, for example by asking a quick question (“Do you mean Mina from 9b ”), commenting on something quickly (“How exciting! ”) or making approving humming noises (“Mmm”). ___19___ The person speaking feels even more heard and there is a resonance(共鸣) between the two.
“Of course, even mild interruptions can be unpleasant for the person being interrupted,” according to communication trainer Jorg Abromeit. For example, when someone asks a question just as the speaker is about to expand on the important part of their message. Asking questions too quickly and too often can also be annoying. The situation is similar with the third group of interruptions, neutral interruptions. They have no deeper meaning. ___20___
Therefore, the key to a successful interruption lies not in the act itself, but in the intention behind it and how it makes the other person feel.
A. Conversations between people are true works of art.
B. Being interrupted while speaking is a common thing to experience.
C. The second type of interruptions, on the other hand, consolidate a relationship.
D. They are neither about power nor about relationship.
E. And the more powerful men are, the longer they speak.
F. This signals to the other person that you are involved and emotionally engaged.
G. Interrupting can also be helpful and highly appreciative.

In Benton School, the chatter of students filled Room 13 every day. Among the lively atmosphere, Wanda Petronski, a poor Polish girl, with her unruly hair and a faded blue dress that showed signs of frequent wear, became the target of cruel jokes among her classmates.
Each morning, as Wanda stepped into the classroom, a sudden silence would fall over the room. The abrupt silence was soon replaced by whispers and laughter. “Look, there’s Wanda,” Peggy would whisper to her friend Maggie, her eyes shining with mischief. Peggy, the most popular girl in class, was well-known for her sharp tongue and a good sense of fashion. Driven by a mix of boredom and meanness (恶意), she would call out, “How many dresses do you have now, Wanda ” Her voice was filled with pretended curiosity.
Wanda would hesitate, her fingers nervously twisting her dress. “A hundred,” she would reply in a soft murmur; her voice was barely heard. Instantly, the classroom would erupt in laughter. “A hundred!” Peggy would shout, her laughter echoing through the room. “I bet they’re all made of paper!” The other students would join in, their cruel laughter filling the air. Wanda’s face would redden with awkward, and she would quickly lower her head, unable to meet anyone’s eyes.
Miss Mason, their teacher, often tried to intervene. “That’s enough, class. Let’s start the lesson,” she would say firmly, attempting to restore order. But the damage had been done. Day after day, Peggy and her group of friends continued to make fun of Wanda, asking about her “hundred dresses” and making ill remarks about her plain clothes.
One day, Miss Mason announced an exciting drawing contest. The theme was “Design a Dress,” and the winning entries would be displayed in the school hall. Peggy, confident in her artistic abilities, was determined to claim victory.

Yuan Longping, known as the “father of hybrid rice”, is one of China’s most famous scientists.
Yuan Longping was born in September 1930 and died in 2021, aged 91. He cultivated the world’s first high-yielding hybrid rice, which has helped feed nearly one-fifth of the world’s population.
After fighting China’s food shortages, he turned his attention to a much bigger challenge, solving world hunger. Since the 1980s, Yuan’s team has offered training courses in dozens of countries in Africa, the Americas and Asia, providing a huge food source in areas with high risks of famine.
Yuan Longping’s legacy is not only the progress of hybrid rice-his curiosity, devotion, courage, perseverance, diligence, cooperation and selflessness have left an indelible spiritual wealth to us all.
47. A few days later, Miss Mason announced the result and everyone was shocked. Wanda won the first prize, for she had submitted 100 exquisite, uniquely detailed fashion design drawings. Each drawing was a masterpiece, featuring elaborate patterns and vivid colors that far exceeded the simple sketches of the other students. Peggy and the class stared in disbelief at the beautiful display of Wanda’s talent. But Wanda wasn’t there to see her triumph. She had been absent for days, likely due to classmates’ constant bad behavior. The classroom was filled with an awkward silence as the students realized how wrong they had been to laugh at her.
Feeling a strong sense of guilt, Peggy and Maggie went to Wanda’s house with the good news. When they arrived, Wanda seemed surprised to see them. Peggy, her voice filled with regret, said, “Wanda, your drawings won! They’re amazing. We’re so sorry for being mean.” Maggie nodded in agreement. Wanda smiled gently and said, “It’s okay.” She then offered to give Peggy and Maggie some of her drawings. “I want you to have them,” she said. Her kindness touched their hearts. From that day on, Peggy and Maggie learned the importance of kindness and never judged others by their appearance again. Whenever anyone walked through the school hall and saw Wanda’s beautiful drawings, they were reminded of the power of forgiveness and the impact that a single act of kindness could have.
