Wells Traditions
Traditions are a part of life at Wells College. They connect us with each other, providing a sense of timelessness and continuity. The experiences and memories that make up these traditions make us all a part of a special community and they’re really fun! Some of the most long-standing traditions include the following:
● Moving up day
Each spring the senior class promotes students to the next class year. This all-student occasion is organized by the senior class. This tradition has recently been split in two with a Senior Roast happening on the Thursday before the last day of classes. At this event, seniors sing songs and tell jokes. On the last day of classes, seniors gather students around the Sycamore where juniors are given college pins (徽章) and seniors are given roses.
● Convocation
Opening Convocation celebrates the beginning of the academic year and the formal introduction of the new incoming class. A traditional part of this convocation is the candlelight ceremony. Symbolized by a candle flame, the spirit of the Wells connection is passed from alumni (校友) to students, signifying what Wells students give to one another throughout their lives.
● Tea time
Tea and coffee are served every Wednesday afternoon. Though the long dresses and china cups are gone, this break from afternoon classes is still a great time to get together with friends and professors.
● Minerva
Outside of Main, the College’s first building, sits the lovely statue of the Roman goddess Minerva, symbolizing wisdom and invention. The senior class decorates Minerva at the beginning of the school year, and Minerva remains decorated throughout the year. During the morning of the last day of classes, after singing around the Sycamore tree, the senior class takes turns kissing the feet of Minerva, believing she will bring success and prosperity to all graduating seniors.
21. Wells traditions are intended to ________.
A. provide a break from classes
B. create a sense of community
C. celebrate timeless achievements
D. introduce new incoming students
22. What can we know about Moving Up Day
A. It is organized annually by juniors.
B. It is held to reward excellent seniors.
C. It is celebrated on two separate days.
D. It is celebrated in two different colleges.
23. Which of the following is believed to bring good luck
A. Minerva. B. Senior Roast. C. Tea and coffee. D. The candlelight.

The road, straight and smooth, leads towards civilization. All around us, the flat nothingness is interrupted only by electricity pylons (输电线塔), stretching into the distance like children holding jump ropes. We pass ghost-town service stations with empty convenience stores stocked with drinks, noodles, and vacuum-packed chicken feet. Then Dunhuang comes into view.
One site that traders would have almost certainly visited is the Mogao Caves. These 492 caves were hand-carved into a cliff face because a Buddhist monk named Le Zun had a vision of 1,000 Buddhas bathed in golden light at the site in 366 C.E. The interior walls were painted with breathtaking murals and the niches (壁龛) filled with statues of Buddha. Merchants would pass by to pray for protection from the warring nomads (游牧民族) and murderous thieves on the path. However, as the Silk Road trade was abandoned in favor of sea routes in the 14th century, Dunhuang was swallowed by the sands of time and knowledge of the caves faded from memory.
I walk along an avenue of silver poplar trees. To my left, the caves look similar to a row of prison blocks: squat square doorframes, each numbered, and set into the concrete. But as I dip my head to enter, a colorful dreamworld of dragons, phoenixes, and petal-scattering apsaras (飞天女神) unfolds. The hands of our guide make shadow puppets on the wall as she gestures in front of the torchlight.
In Cave 96 sits a nine-story-tall Buddha statue, the third tallest in China. All I can see is the edge of his robes decorated with fierce dragons and blue lotus flowers. His long toenails are at the right height for scratching the top of my head. I crane my neck to stare at his ruby lips. They are tightly pursed, refusing to tell me the whispered secrets of travelers before me.
24 Which best describes the author’s impression on the way to Dunhuang
A. Peaceful. B. Burdened. C. Deserted. D. Modernized.
25. How did the decline of the Silk Road trade affect Dunhuang
A. It led to the construction of more caves.
B. It caused Dunhuang to become timeless.
C. It attracted more and more tourists to Dunhuang.
D. It resulted in Dunhuang being forgotten over time.
26. What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To explain the significance of the cave.
B. To convey the author’s sense of wonder.
C. To highlight the cultural value of the cave.
D. To provide specific description of the cave.
27. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Caves of Faith B. Echoes of the cave
C. Secrets of the Silk Road D. Guardians of the Golden Light

Today the widespread use of English as a language of science, technology, business, diplomacy, and entertainment has given many people a strong motivation to acquire the language. Millions of people are learning English. They, too, are making their own mark on its development.
Speakers of world varieties of English are remaking its vocabulary to better express their identities, cultures, and everyday realities. In the Philippines, many houses have a dirty kitchen. This is not actually a kitchen that is dirty in the sense you think, but one outside the house where most of the real cooking is done. A dirty kitchen is a necessary convenience in a tropical country where it is best to avoid trapping heat and smells indoors. In Nigeria, a mama put is a street food stall. The term comes from the way its customers usually order food: They say “Mama, put...” to the woman running the stall and point to the dish they want.
In Oxford University Press’s Gift of Words campaign, we asked people who speak more than one language to “gift” a word from their first to their second language, and vice versa. The responses we received highlight even more words that multilingual English speakers felt they had to borrow from their other languages for lack of a direct equivalent in English.
Calling these borrowed words “gifts” is an important shift in perspective. Many value language purity over diversity and consider external influences as a threat to the integrity (完整性) of a language. However, this is in contradiction to how language works. The borrowing of words is part of the natural evolution of all living languages. English is particularly notable for its ability to absorb elements from other languages. A host of words were borrowed from Old Norse, Norman French, Latin, and Ancient Greek much earlier in its history, including core ones such as egg, fashion, universe, and economy.
Contrary to popular belief, it is multilingualism rather than monolingualism that is the norm. Various reports estimate that between 60% and 75% of the global population can speak more than one language. In such a multilingual, digitally interconnected world, where more and more people are brought together by shared interests and goals rather than just geographic proximity, the interchange of words between languages and cultures has sped up.
Changing our attitudes towards multilingualism and language variation is vital to fighting the linguistic prejudice that causes discrimination for not using the “right” words or for speaking in the “wrong” accent. It is only when we share ownership of English and embrace the language in all its diversity that it can truly be a gift from which everyone can benefit.
28. How does the author explain his point in Para. 2
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing the rules.
C. By making comparisons. D. By providing instructions.
29. The Gift of Words campaign showed there was _________.
A. a lack of native words in other languages
B. a preference for using only English word
C. an over-abundance of English vocabulary
D. a need to borrow words from other languages
30. Which can replace the underlined word “proximity” in Para. 5
A. Difference. B. Closeness. C. Prejudice. D. Change.
31. According to the author, what is key to reducing linguistic prejudice and discrimination
A. Viewing borrowed words as “gifts”.
B. Promoting the use of standard English.
C. Encouraging people to learn more foreign languages.
D. Including borrowed words in authoritative dictionaries.
D
A study published on June 28, 2024, found that consuming coffee might act like a placebo (安慰剂), making drinkers feel ready to tackle the day.
Most coffee drinkers believe their morning cup makes them more alert due to its caffeine. This study aimed to determine if this wakefulness is due to caffeine or the experience of drinking coffee.
“There is a common expectation that coffee increases alertness and psychomotor (精神运动的) functioning,” said study co-author Nuno Sousa. “Understanding the mechanisms can open pathways for exploring factors that may regulate it and its potential benefits.”
The study recruited (招募) participants who drank at least one cup of coffee per day. Participants avoided caffeinated drinks for at least three hours before the study. They were interviewed and underwent two functional MRI (fMRI) scans: one before consuming caffeine or coffee and the other 30 minutes after. During the fMRI scans, participants were asked to relax and let their minds wander.
Results showed that connectivity in the default (默认) mode network decreased after drinking coffee or taking caffeine, indicating that both substances made people more prepared to transition from rest to daily tasks. However, coffee increased connectivity in the higher visual network and the right executive control network, involved in working memory, cognitive control and goal-directed behavior. This increase did not occur with caffeine alone, suggesting that to feel alert and ready to go, coffee is more effective than caffeine alone.
“In simple words, the subjects were more ready for action and alert to external stimuli after having coffee,” said co-author Maria Pico Perez. The specific smell and taste of coffee or the psychological expectation associated with drinking it might contribute to its unique effects.
32. What was the main purpose of the study
A. To study potential benefits of coffee.
B. To identify the source of wakefulness.
C. To evaluate the best time to drink coffee.
D. To study the effects of caffeine on health.
33. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The process of the study. B. The limitations of the study.
C. The implications of the study. D. The requirement of the study.
34. What did the study find about the effects of drinking coffee on the brain
A. It reduced alertness to external stimuli.
B. It weakened cognitive control networks.
C. It boosted connectivity in the default mode network.
D. It increased connectivity in the higher visual network.
35. What did the researchers suggest might play a role in the unique effects of coffee
A. Where coffee is enjoyed. B. What type of beans is used.
C. Its particular smell and flavor. D. Individuals’ psychological state.

It was an ordinary Saturday morning. The sun was peeking through the clouds, casting a warm glow over the park. Emily was running in the park. She loved running because she believed that after a tough week at work, running could not only help her exercise her body but also free her mind from stress and exhaustion.
There were a lot of people in the park. Children were running around and playing, the elderly were leisurely practicing tai chi, and young couples were strolling by the lake. Emily was enjoying the lively and pleasant atmosphere. Her steps were light and rhythmic, and every breath made her feel more comfortable, filling her lungs with the fresh scent of the blooming flowers.
Suddenly, there was some noise not far away. Emily looked in that direction and saw a crowd gathering, looking panicked. She ran over to see what had happened. There was an old woman lying on the ground, her face pale as a sheet and her lips slightly purple and quivering (颤抖). Beside her, another old woman shouted anxiously, “She’s having a heart attack! What should we do Who can help ” Everyone around looked troubled. Some were calling an ambulance on their phones, but no one knew how to help the old woman before the ambulance arrived.
Emily’s friend Jane is a nurse. The hospital where she works once held public welfare activities for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR,心肺复苏) training in Emily’s community. Emily attended this event only because Jane asked her to help make up the numbers. At that time, she was more interested in the free snacks and small gifts provided than the training itself. Never had she imagined that there would be a day when she would need to use this skill.

Taking a deep breath, Emily stepped forward. She knelt down on the ground beside the old woman and checked her condition. Then, she crossed her palms, straightened her arms and started doing CPR. Counting in her mind, she pressed the old woman’s chest with the required rhythm and force. After every 30 chest compressions, she performed two rescue breaths. Anxiety hung in the air, and the hearts of everyone watching were in their throats. Emily was soaked in sweat and her arms and legs felt incredibly sore. However, she kept going.
Finally, the medical staff arrived. Emily explained to them the old woman’s condition and the measures she had taken. They checked the old woman's condition and said she was out of danger. After the woman was lifted into the ambulance, thunderous applause erupted among the crowd, with many people nodding and smiling at Emily. Emily smiled back, feeling happy that she had saved a life. That evening, a video of her heroic act went viral on social media, with countless people leaving comments praising Emily's behavior. For Emily, she felt she had only done what was right, and planned to teach those around her the important skill of CPR.
