Books are excellent gifts. Here are four of the year’s most talked-about titles.
Ordinary Monsters | By J. M. Miro
Miro has temporarily abandoned literary fiction in favour of a new series of historical fantasy novels. Ordinary Monsters is about a group of children with magical gifts who come together and pool their powers to escape the bad shape-shifting man that’s going after them.
Son of Elsewhere: A Memoir in Pieces | By Elamin Abdelmahmoud
The soundtrack to The O. C., a drama series, and the strange beauty of Highway 401 were important factors in developing selfhood of Abdelmahmoud. This book describes his own experience of moving from Khartoum, Sudan, to Kingston, Canada, in the early 2000s at age 12.
A Magic Steeped in Poison | By Judy I. Lin
Harry Potter has his magic stick. And Ning, the heroine of Lin’s first novel, has tea, which in her world carries magical properties. Lin has created a pleasing Young Adult fantasy rich in Chinese mythology (神话). In this book, Ning enters a competition to find the most gifted tea master, Shennong.
A Ballet of Lepers | By Leonard Cohen
Unlike many other posthumous (死后出版的) works, you can count on Cohen’s to be worth your wait. Before his death, he said that the novel contained in the book, which was never published, was likely better than The Favourite Game, a novel he published during his lifetime. This book also includes a radio play script (剧本) and a handful of short stories.

Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearing-impaired (听力障碍) children for 33 years, and thanks to her help and devotion, more than 20 of the over 80 students she has taught have received higher education.
Liu, 51, was born in Hengyang, Hunan province, in 1973. And her first interaction with people with disability was with one of her neighbors, surnamed Wang. Liu was a child then. One day in the winter, when Liu was playing in her house, Wang used sign language to communicate with her. But Liu could not understand what she was trying to say. It was Wang’s husband who told Liu that she wanted to make her a scarf.
“Even as a child, I was moved by her kind gesture, and thought it would be great if she could speak,” Liu said. The incident left a mark on Liu. At the age of 14, she decided to major in teaching hearing-impaired students, and gained admission to Nanjing Normal University of Special Education. After four years, she graduated with a secondary vocational degree and became a teacher at Hengyang Normal School of Special Education.
She remembers clearly that there were 14 students in her class. Although she was only 18 at the time, she treated the students as her children, and practiced sign language in front of the mirror for one to two hours every day till she mastered it. Apart from teaching her class together, she also has one-on-one sessions with each student for 20 minutes every day.
For her contributions to society, especially her work with the hearing-impaired, Liu Lingli was elected as a deputy to the National People’s Congress last year, and fulfilled the heavy responsibility of speaking for people with disability. Her story also inspired more people to do more for disabled people.
24. What can we learn about Liu Lingli from the first two paragraphs
A. She enabled her students to hear well.
B. She was a teacher when she first met Wang.
C. She had difficulty in understanding Wang’s husband.
D. She helped about a quarter of her students receive higher education.
25. What likely served as Liu Lingli’s initial motivation to help the disabled
A. An unhappy incident. B. A gift from a stranger.
C. Her interaction with Wang. D. Wang’s kind suggestion.
26. What can be inferred about Liu Lingli’s teaching approach from the text
A. She does not use sign language in her teaching.
B. She prefers group lessons to individual sessions.
C. She uses modern educational tools in her teaching.
D. She provides personalized attention for each student.
27. Which of the following can best describe Liu Lingli
A. Caring and committed. B. Responsible but rigid.
C. Curious and adventurous. D. Generous but stubborn.
C
The moon may hold frozen water in more places and in larger quantities than previously suspected. And for the first time, the presence of water on the moon’s sunlit surface has been confirmed, scientists reported. That’s good news for astronauts at future lunar bases who could tap into these resources for drinking and making rocket fuel.
More than 40,000 square kilometers of lunar surface have the capability to trap water in the form of ice, according to a team led by the University of Colorado’s Paul Hayne. That’s 20% more area than previous estimates, he said. These latest findings expand the possible landing spots for robots and astronauts.
The presence of water in sunlit surfaces had been previously suggested, but not confirmed. The molecules (分子) are so far apart that they are in neither liquid nor solid form, said lead researcher Casey Honniball of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. And NASA’s astrophysics director Paul Hertz said it’s too soon to know whether this water — found in and around the southern hemisphere’s sunlit Clavius Crater — would be accessible.
As for the shadowed areas believed to be rich in frozen water near the moon’s north and south poles, temperatures are so low that they could hold onto the water for millions or even billions of years. These so-called cold traps get down to minus 163 degrees Celsius.
Using data from NASA, the researchers identified the size of cold traps and used computer models to get all the way down to micrometers in size. Since the little ones are too small to see from orbit, despite being vastly more numerous, we can’t yet identify ice inside them,” Hayne said, “Once we’re on the surface, we will do that experiment.”
Scientists believe all this water on the moon came from comets, asteroids (小行星), interplanetary dust, the solar wind or even lunar volcanic eruptions. They’ll have a better idea of the sources “if we can get down on the surface and analyze samples of the ice,” Hayne said.
28. What can be inferred from the text
A. Water is extremely crucial for space exploration.
B. Researchers identified cold traps using computers.
C. Scientists knew well the sources of water on the moon.
D. Cold traps are found in and around the southern hemisphere.
29. What do we know from paragraphs 3 and 4
A. The presence of water hasn’t been confirmed.
B. Shadowed areas are abundant in frozen water.
C Water can be easy to obtain on the moon soon.
D. Water molecules on the moon are closely connected.
30. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Data. B. Sunlit surfaces.
C. Cold traps. D. Computer models
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. The sources of water on the moon.
B. Water ice is widespread on the moon.
C. Good news for astronauts at lunar bases.
D. Moon holds more water than ever thought.
D
“You know when you walk past a parked car on a hot day and feel the heat it gives off ” says Márcia Matias at the University of Lisbon in Portugal. “That’s real! It’s not your imagination.”
Dark-coloured cars can make a measurable difference on nearby air temperature, as they absorb (吸收) and emit (排放) more heat than lighter vehicles when sitting on the street or in a parking lot. The collective impact from hundreds of thousands or millions of cars in cities could significantly influence urban heat island effects, and even increase heat stress for passers-by during sunny days.
Matias and her colleagues measured the air temperature around two cars — one black and one white — parked outside for more than 5 hours during daylight. Their measurements showed the black car raised the surrounding air temperature by as much as 3.8°C compared to the nearby asphalt (沥青) under a clear and sunny summer sky with temperatures of 36°C. Meanwhile, the white car had much smaller impacts on the surrounding air temperature.
The reason for such temperature differences is white vehicle paint reflects between 75 and 85 percent of incoming sunlight, while black paint absorbs most incoming sunlight, reflecting just 5 to 10 percent. A car’s thin dark skin can heat up quickly under strong sunlight, unlike even very dark asphalt that is thicker and warms more slowly. “Now picture thousands of cars parked across a city, each one acting like a little heat source,” says Matias. “Their colour can actually shift how hot the streets feel.”
The researchers calculated repainting parked cars from dark to lighter colours could create cooler surfaces and lower near-surface air temperatures on sunny, low wind days. Using the city of Lisbon as an example, the change could effectively raise street-level reflectance (反射率) of incoming sunlight from just 20 percent to nearly 40 percent in areas where parked cars cover more than 10 percent of the road.
“Making use of light-coloured vehicles to relieve urban heat is particularly novel”, says Sarah Berk at the University of North Carolina. Previous studies have focused on improving roofs and pavement to reflect more sunlight.
32. Why do dark cars impact nearby air temperature more greatly
A. Because they are in larger numbers.
B. Because more heat is trapped by them.
C. Because more sunlight is reflected by them.
D. Because they have been parked for longer time.
33. How did Matias conduct the research
A. By analyzing the previous data.
B. By changing the incoming sunlight.
C. By tracking the change in temperature.
D. By comparing the thickness of car paint.
34. Which statement will the researchers probably agree with
A. Dark asphalt heats up faster than dark cars.
B. Lighter paint on cars can cool down the streets.
C. Vehicle color has little impact on urban temperatures.
D. The reflectance of sunlight is mainly controlled by building materials.
35. What’s Sarah Berk’s attitude towards Matias’s research
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Worried. D. Uninterested.

Emily had spent her entire life in New York City. The tall buildings, the crowded streets, and the friends she had grown up with were the essence of her existence. But when she was 15, her life took an unexpected turn. Her father got a promotion that required the family to relocate to Texas. It was a depressing decision as it meant parting with everything she held dear.
With the move came a new school for Emily. Every time she considered leaving her current school, she was overcome with sadness. She was afraid of the changes ahead — the new environment, the new school, and the new faces she would encounter. She wasn't sure if she could adapt or if she would be isolated.
After a long and tiring journey across the states, the family reached Texas and settled down. When the day to start at her new school arrived, Emily's mind was burdened with concerns. What if the classmates were mean and unapproachable What if she remained friendless
The following morning, Emily's parents drove her to school. Her heart pounded in her chest as they arrived at the large concrete building. She hugged her parents tightly, took a deep breath, and got out of the car. With each step towards the school entrance, her nervousness increased. She felt as if she was entering a completely strange world.
Emily was welcomed by a school teacher, who was extremely kind. Noticing Emily's uneasiness and shyness, he decided to give her a tour of the campus first. Emily was shown the art studio, the well-equipped library, and the expansive football field where she thought about joining the cheerleading team. As they walked around, Emily slowly realized that the school was actually quite charming and started to feel a bit more at ease.
Finally, they reached the academic building and made their way to Emily's new classroom, and her heart began to race once again. The teacher led her to the door and gave her a reassuring smile.

M: Yes. Sadly, tourism ruined the natural life there. That is why the Thai government closed the beach to tourists for about four years.
W: I didn’t know it was closed for about four years. So when did it reopen
M: It opened in January 2022. Now there is a limit of 300 visitors per day.
W: Well, I think it’s a good decision.
M: I agree. Scientists there believe that beach is a natural resource they have to preserve. Actually there’re many other great beaches in Thailand. We don’t have to visit that one.
W: You’re right. But I don’t know any other beaches.
M: It’s easy. Let’s search for some information on websites and then make a decision.
W: Good idea.

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
Thank you for listening to our voices to revise the English newspaper. I’d like to share my viewpoints with you.
To tell the truth, some columns, such as Science and Pop Culture, are particularly welcomed because we can obtain the latest news of high-technology development as well as diverse civilizations. Therefore, I hope the two sections will be kept. On the other hand, since many readers show a lack of interest in the Business section, could you replace it with a sports column We can not only keep track of sports news but also get valuable suggestions for building us up by reading that section.
I hope the updated version of the English newspaper will gain more readers in the near future.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
Standing at the classroom door, Emily hesitated for a moment. She could hear the chatter of students inside, and her hands grew sweaty. With a final glance at the teacher, who nodded encouragingly, she pushed the door open. The room fell silent for a moment as everyone looked at her. But then, a girl with a warm smile stood up and said, "Hi! You must be Emily. We've been waiting for you." The friendly greeting eased the tension in the air. The other students soon followed suit, introducing themselves and asking her about New York.
As the class began, Emily felt a sense of relief wash over her. The classmates seemed friendly and eager to get to know her. She actively participated when she could, and her classmates were helpful whenever she had questions. Emily found herself engaged in interesting class discussions and started to see the potential for new friendships. She was excited to explore more of the school and welcome this new chapter of her life. She was ready to face the rest of the day with a more positive attitude. Although the move had been scary, it had also opened up new opportunities.
