History books are filled with warriors (战士) — male warriors, that is. Less referenced are the women who took up spears, bows, swords, and clubs to fight. Here’s a look at some of history’s women warriors out of this world.
Mulan in ancient China
The Disney movie Mulan has received enormous success. Mulan’s story goes back to the sixth century and was written in the 11th-century “Ballad of Mulan”. In the eloquent poem, the girl took the place of her elderly father in the army, since he had no adult son, and she fought against invaders as a man for 12 years.
Boudicca: revenge against Rome
Boudicca, the queen of the Iceni of East Anglia, Britain, did not set out to be a warrior. But after her husband, the Iceni ruler, died in 60/61AD, the Romans whipped her and her daughters, and she had no choice but to make a stand. Boudicca raised an army and destroyed Camulodunum, Londinium, and Verulamium of Rome.
Joan of Arc: soldier of God
At the height of the 15th-century Hundred Years’ War between France and England, a young peasant girl came to the rescue of France. Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was just a teen when in 1429 she approached the dauphin Charles, the heir to the French throne who had yet to be crowned (为……加冕) (the English held Reims, France’s traditional coronation site). She was given permission to raise troops and ride forth. Joan and her troops liberated the besieged city of Orléans, clearing the way for Charles Ⅶ to be crowned at last, giving France a rightful king.
Tang Sai-er: rebel leader
During China’s 15th-century Ming Dynasty, Tang Sai-er, a young girl from Putai (present-day Shandong province), was taught martial arts by her father. Her world changed when she lost her parents, and then her husband, at a time when the emperor imposed hefty taxes and flood and drought ravaged the land. She raised a peasant army in 1420, successfully fighting Ming soldiers. In some accounts, she won one battle by creating a flying demon army out of paper dolls. At last she was defeated and fled, and was never found.
21. What motivated Mulan to join the army according to the “Ballad of Mulan”
A. She wanted to protect her country from invaders.
B. She replaced her elderly father who had no adult son.
C. She wished to prove women could fight as men.
D She admired famous warriors of her time.
22. What was the direct result of Boudicca’s war
A. Several Roman cities were destroyed.
B. The Romans immediately left Britain.
C. She defeated the French army in battle.
D. She crowned herself as queen of England.
23. Which common feature did Joan of Arc and Tang Sai er share
A. Both were crowned as rulers.
B. Both were from noble families.
C. Both raised armies at a young age.
D. Both won against the English invaders in the final battle.
【答案】21. B 22. A 23. C
B
Hidden in the thick green canopy of the Amazon rainforest, scientists have found an unlikely hero: a fungus called Pestalotiopsis microspora. At first it looks like an ordinary organism, but this tiny species may help solve one of today's largest environmental problems — plastic pollution.
The discovery was made by a Yale University research team during an expedition in Ecuador. While collecting fungi for possible medical use, the scientists noticed something surprising. Pestalotiopsis microspora can survive by feeding on polyurethane, a strong type of plastic used in insulation (隔热), furniture foam, coatings, and shoes. Even more exciting, the fungus can do this in oxygen-free settings such as landfills, where plastic usually remains for centuries.
Why is this so important Polyurethane is one of the most difficult plastics to recycle. Most of it ends up buried in landfills or scattered across ecosystems. If this fungus can safely break it down, it could change how we manage plastic waste. Instead of persisting for generations, the plastic could be converted into simpler substances through natural processes.
Scientists imagine several future uses. One day, waste centers might use biological systems powered by fungi to treat plastic. Smaller household units might even “compost” certain plastics with lab-grown strains. However, researchers warn that much more study is needed. Large-scale use will require careful testing, bioengineering, and environmental safeguards.
For everyday people, the message is clear. We cannot expect one organism to clean up the planet. Real progress will require reducing single-use plastics, developing biodegradable materials, and protecting ecosystems like the rainforest, which may hold more hidden solutions. Supporting biodiversity is not just about saving rare species — it may also unlock tools to repair the damage caused by human activity.
While Pestalotiopsis microspora will not erase the garbage on the Pacific Ocean on its own, it offers bined with recycling reform, new materials, and global cooperation, discoveries like this remind us that nature itself may guide us toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
24. What makes Pestalotiopsis microspora particularly valuable for plastic waste treatment
A. It produces medical compounds while degrading plastic.
B. It converts plastic into reusable industrial materials.
C. It grows faster than other fungi in rainforests.
D. It breaks down plastic in oxygen-free environments.
25. What does the underlined word “persisting” in Paragraph 3 most likely mean
A. being recycled repeatedly. B. releasing toxic chemicals gradually.
C. remaining unchanged for long periods. D. mixing with other waste materials.
26. What does the author imply about biodiversity protection
A. It mainly benefits endangered species conservation.
B. It may reveal new solutions to human-made problems.
C. It conflicts with industrial development goals.
D. It is less urgent than reducing plastic production.
27. What is the author’s attitude toward the new findings about Pestalotiopsis microspora
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Pessimistic. D. Critical.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. A
C
Laughter is often called the best medicine, but according to a new study led by researchers from Pennsylvania State University, it could also serve as an effective parenting tool. “Humor can teach people cognitive (认知的) flexibility, relieve stress, and promote creative problem solving and resilience,” noted Benjamin Levi, the senior author of the study.
The researchers surveyed 312 individuals aged 18 to 45. More than half reported being raised by caregivers who used humor and 71.8% agreed that humor can be an effective parenting tool. The majority also said they either use or plan to use humor with their children and believe it has more potential benefits than drawbacks.
The researchers also found that among those who reported that their parents used humor, 50.5% said they had a good relationship with their parents, and 44.2% felt their parents did a good job raising them. On the contrary, among those whose parents didn’t use humor, only 2.9% reported having a good relationship with their parents, and just 3.6% believed their parents had done a good job.
According to the study’s first author Lucy Emery, both business and parenting are hierarchical (等级制的). “In business, humor is shown to help reduce hierarchies, create better environments for collaboration and creativity, and relieve tension,” she said, noting that while parent-child relationships are more loving than business relationships, stressful situations are common in parenting. “Humor can help reduce that tension and hierarchy, making both parties feel better about stressful situations.”
The study authors noted that if these findings are generalizable, they potentially open the door to a much deeper exploration of how “parenting humor” can be appropriately applied to enhancing the experiences of both children and their parents. “To that end, we should examine how parents currently use different kinds of humor, and how to map these uses of humor onto existing knowledge and theory,” Levi said.
28. What’s the purpose of the new study
A. To prove strict parenting is outdated. B. To measure different people’s sense of humor.
C. To explore humor’s role in parenting. D. To compare humor in parenting and business.
29. What might happen to humorous parents according to the study
A. They bond better with their children. B. They tend to be successful in business.
C. They avoid conflicts with their children. D. They face challenges in establishing authority.
30. What is humor’s role in business
A. Creating a formal environment. B. Maintaining authority structures.
C. Making relationships feel more balanced. D. Increasing power differences between parties.
31. How does the author end this text
A. By offering choices of new research methods.
B. By discussing the direction for further research.
C. By stressing the need to involve more participants.
D. By mentioning potential applications of the findings.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. C 31. B

In a remote village in the hills of Yunnan Province, a dusty patch of earth has become fertile (肥沃的) ground for hope. Every day, 36 girls aged 10 to 15 — from low-income backgrounds — train as the “Shining Star Football Team.” Their coach, Zhang Wei, a former city athlete who gave up his job in 2020, launched the programme to determine to change girls’ futures through football.
“People questioned why girls should play football,” Zhang remembers. “But these girls have broken stereotypes. Football isn’t just physical — it builds teamwork, resilience, and self-belief.” Their motto — “Run like the wind, fight like a lioness” — captures a spirit forged in hardship and hope.
Across China, there is growing evidence that sport can improve educational outcomes. In Southwest China, for example, rural girls’ involvement in football has helped lift school performance and increase enrollment. Stories from Chongqing show that scores of girls from remote areas have leveraged their football skills to gain admission into better urban schools and even universities.
For 13-year-old Li Xia, football has been life-changing. She used to rush from school to help with farm chores; now she works twice as hard in class to keep playing. Last year, the team secured a county championship — a victory that lit up her world, boosting her confidence and ambition.
Support from government and community has been vital. Recent rural sports policies have opened funding channels for facilities, equipment, and coaching — especially in provinces such as Yunnan. Local pitches once muddy and makeshift are now better outfitted; uniforms replace tattered (破旧的) clothes.
“Sport is a bridge to education and equality,” says Dr. Wang from Beijing Sports University. These girls are not only scoring goals on the field — they’re winning new futures, too.
32. What was the main reason Zhang Wei started the football program
A. To discover professional players. B. To compete in national championships.
C. To promote tourism in Yunnan. D. To empower girls through sports.
33. Which government action directly supported the team’s development
A. Building new stadiums in major cities. B. Funding rural sports facilities and equipment.
C. Organizing national youth leagues. D. Providing free university education.
34. According to Dr. Wang, what is the fundamental role of football for these girls
A. A path to athletic professionalism. B. A tool for educational and social equality.
C. A means to escape rural poverty quickly. D. A method for physical fitness enhancement.
35. What is the best title for the passage
A. Government Policies on Rural Development B. Zhang Wei: From Player to Coach
C. Football: A New Path for Village Girls D. The Challenges of Rural Education
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. B 35. C

【答案】参考范文:
Recently, we have had a heated discussion about whether we should use electronic dictionary pens. Different people hold different views.
Some students are in favour of the idea, arguing that the electronic dictionary pen is easy to carry, which brings convenience to our English learning. Moreover, it’s faster to get the meaning by scanning a word. Nevertheless, others are against it. First, they hold the belief that the electronic dictionary pen has a small vocabulary and fewer explanations of words. Second, we may become too dependent when it comes to memorizing new words.
Personally, I think using electronic dictionary pens should be allowed, which will help us learn English more conveniently.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On my last first day of elementary school, I felt my heart beating fast as I stepped into the classroom. My fourth-grade report wasn’t good, and “Needs Improvement” comments made me nervous and uneasy all the time. Although I worked very hard, I failed the final exam. Almost every time the teacher asked me to answer a question, my voice shook. But the moment Mr. Harrison —or “Mr. H”, as he insisted we call him — greeted us with a smile, my nerves disappeared gradually. “Welcome to the fifth grade! Take any seat you like,” he said with a warm voice. Young and energetic, he had a way of making even the shyest students feel at ease. I chose a desk near the front due to my nearsightedness, grateful for his approachable behaviour.
Mr. H was an encouraging class and math teacher and he made learning exciting with his fun ideas and positive attitude. It did not matter whether you were the best or worst student in the class. What he did made you feel you were special. I remember the day when Mr. H announced, “Everyone, we have new students joining the class.” He was holding a cage with three tiny gerbils (沙鼠). Everyone shouted with joy. “They’re part of our family now,” he declared, and indeed, under his guidance, the classroom felt like one. Smiley faces were his trademark. He always put a smiley face on the chalkboard, homework and test papers.
When I failed my first math quiz, he drew a smiley face beside my score and wrote, “Let’s figure this out together.” After class, he pulled me aside, “You’re smarter than you think,” he said. His words carried a quiet certainty that made me sit up straight. They weren’t empty praise—they were an invitation to see myself differently. “But we need to find a way that works for you,” he continued. And he meant it.

【答案】One possible version:
He stayed late twice a week to help me with my math. Every Tuesday and Thursday after school, our empty classroom became a laboratory of learning where mistakes weren’t failures, but clues to solving the puzzles. He broke down maths problems into stories. His creative teaching way and encouraging words made me realize I wasn’t bad at school and that I just needed a guiding way. Slowly, my Ds became Cs, and then Bs. But more than grades, the way he celebrated tiny victories — smiley faces on my homework — gave me confidence.
By the end of the term, something unexpected happened. I raised my hand in class without hesitation for the first time. When Mr. H asked me to answer a question, my voice didn’t shake. During a terrifying test, I got an A+. I realized I’d stopped checking for “Needs Improvement” comments — not because they’d disappeared, but because I finally saw my own potential under the guidance of Mr. H. I was so grateful to Mr. H, whose cheerful, positive and smiley faces could really make a difference in other people’s lives.绝密★启用前

D. Critical.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He stayed late twice a week to help me with my math.
